Met Bob Lilly

What a great guy! Nice to hear that story, and see the photo.

I got to say a few words of appreciation to him once, when I ended up in line behind him at a grocery store. Lilly was quite the gentleman. Your experiance certainly backs that up. Wish I'd had a camera!

Very happy for you. He used to own a restaurant in Las Cruces, NM and he was always so congenial to everyone. Not surprised at all that when he heard you were a fan he sought you out. He is 100% class all the time.

I'm interested to hear some stories of your encounters with Bob Lilly -- was he a good cook?

Met him at a restaurant where I am currently working at here in Texas(Georgetown), very nice man, everybody in my crew let him know i was a Big Cowboys fan and he right away came over, didn't have nothing for him to sign but took a picture just to say i met him, lol. He also showed me the first Super Bowl Ring, the only thing that i said was, WOW, lol, good little experience thought I'd share with the zone.

So does he live in Georgetown?

Unless he moved in the recent past, he was living in New Mexico... and he's heavy into photography, reportedly pretty good at it...

Never, ever have understood the autograph thing, never have asked for one in my life -- but pictures are awesome. It's so much more personal and genuine.

That's the way I've always felt, too... I'd be embarrassed to ask anybody for an autograph...

That is AWESOME!!!

Bob Lilly is the reason I became a Cowboys fan in the first place. I met him before a preseason game against the Rams in L.A. in 1963. I was 5 at the time and we were big time Rams fans. My grandmother had box seats at the Coliseum which allowed us to come early and eat at the "Coliseum Club".

Well, being a rambunctious 5-year old my dad took me for a walk before the game and we ended up out back where the players buses come in. Sitting on a planter we watched as a couple of buses pulled up and these big guys started piling out with the gear. One huge guy stopped and started talking with me. My dad is a big guy but this guy was HUGE!

He was asking me about school and what sports I liked, particularly about football. I told him my favorite player was Merlin Olsen and he said that he wore the same number but for the Cowboys. I told him I would watch for him during the game.

We talked for what must have been 3 minutes but it seemed like 20 to me since all the other players were already inside by this time. He was so nice and I loved his smile and his hand was simply enormous as he shook mine to leave.

He had told me his name but I had forgotten it so I asked my dad who he was and he said "That's Bob Lilly". He's been my hero and I've been a Cowboys fan ever since that day.

On a side note, a woman we knew waited tables at a cafe in Throckmorton, TX and knew Bob since he used to come in often back when he lived there. When I told her the story of how I met him she said that he was just like that, he would talk with anyone and was always very friendly even though he was kind of shy most of the time.

Well congratulations to the OP. That has to be a lifetime memory. The closest I've ever come to that is Being stationed with Napoleon McCallum (Raiders RB) in the Navy (CGN-36) He too was a genuinely nice person although not nearly the career of Mr. Cowboy. You're a lucky person. Enjoy the Pic. I'd have it blown up and mounted on my living room wall. :D

Not much I can tell you really. I doubt he did much of the cooking. My Aunt was a waitress there for a while. She says he was always visiting with the customers. I only ate there one time and he was very cordial and I wished I had a camera with me that day.

I live in Georgetown and see him at church once in a while. Freaked out first time I saw him there. Nolan Ryan also has a house in Georgetown. While I'm dropping names, Joey Kramer (Aerosmith Drummer) lives here too. I've seen him at the grocery store.

He lives in Sun City Georgetown. A few years ago he was a model in an all male calender that the residents put together for a fundraiser. I'm sure the old gals got a kick out of a shirtless Mr. Cowboy even though the last thing they needed was yet another source for hot flashes.
