What a great guy. If I could have beers with a former Cowboy: he'd be my choice. He was totally class and willing to talk ball & Cowboys lore

Better than an autograph, but I got one of those too.

1st time in awhile I was reminded why I remain DC4L.

There is no other sports franchise on Earth with this size fanbase. So many interesting side stories and unique player personalities that people care to know more about.

To "the Manster": thanks for making my day!

Had a buddy that tutored him at UMD. Randy said " I don't care, I'm going to be drafted in the first round and become an all-pro". He was right. He really was a freak of nature, could do it all. He also broke the picket line during the strike, he was that committed to playing.

Ehhhhhh......that's not the reason why he broke the picket line.

Tex Schramm was going to revoke an annuity that was part of his contract, and he came back to prevent that from happening. Schramm did the same thing to Tony Dorsett.

He’s a cool guy. Big martial arts guy, so he’d always hang around the Muay Thai gym and occasionally would come in to watch our sessions while he was waiting for his food next door.

100%, your memory is spot on!

Ok, was not aware of that piece. Didn't TD call him captain scab? Or was it someone else?

TD called Danny White Captain Scab, then had to eat a boatload of crow when he had to cross the picket line because of Schramm threatening to take his annuity away.

EDIT: you are correct - it was Randy White, not Danny White, that Dorsett referred to. My bad.

My buddy met him today also. Got me an autographed photo and a video message from him.

Very cool

That’s not why he was the first to cross the picket line. He said he did it for the money.

"I always loved playing football, but I hated playing football then. It wasn't fun. I didn't even like playing in the [replacement] games. I was just protecting myself, and I'd never played a football game like that. It just wasn't fun for me."
"I'm doing what's best for me and my family. I didn't want to lose one-sixteenth of my salary.

It was not popular move with everyone

As White and Smerek drove into the parking lot of the Valley Ranch team headquarters, a few of the demonstrating players and other supportive union members at first tried to block their way and started yelling, "Scabs! Scabs!"
All-Pro running back Tony Dorsett lashed out, saying, "As a team captain, he let the team down. But he's going to make the All-Pro list this year – the scabs' All-Pro list. We'll call him 'Captain Scab' now."

The 82 and 87 season, and the fact that the cowboys were not united either time, fractured the team and was the biggest reason why the franchise went downhill.

there were giants on the earth in those days.

How did you meet my absolute favorite player? I jealous.

Met Randy White in Fort Lauderdale, FL, in 1994. At an autograph show. I didn't know there was one going on.
At the Sawgrass Mills Mall. Same place I met Troy Aikman in 1992.

We were leaving the mall, and my wife said, hey there is a card show. I looked from about 20 yards away. Said, dang, that is Randy White.
She went to buy something for him to autograph, got a mini helmet.
The show was almost over. Talked to him for about 10 minutes. When I walked up, Cowboys t-shirt on of course. He stood up and shook my hand. Let me try on his SB XXII ring.

No charge for the autograph. This sports place usually charged $20. He said they told him he could leave if he wanted to. But he said his obligation was to be there until 5:00. Had 20 minutes to go. So he stayed.
