First, the NFL isn't a government entity, so there's not going to be public accountability in the way an organization that receives taxpayers dollars has.Unless it is a public accountability process, akin to what MLB runs, it is meaningless. BTW, the reason for the obvious issues MLB are well know insofar as who the deficient umps are .. that they can’t get rid of them is solely a union issue.
Second, it isn't necessarily meaningless if it's not public in the way you envision it. The NFL conducts its business in the public eye. Therefore, fans know which refs are screwing up. You don't think that comes to the attention of the refs and the NFL? It does.
