"Quarterback is the only position in the NFL where you could be mediocre and get paid. At every other position, you can't be mediocre," Bennett said. "If I was Ryan Tannehill and the most games I ever won was seven, how could you get a $100 million for that? I guess that's the value of the position.

"There's some mediocre quarterbacks in the NFL that make a lot of money," Bennett said. "You take a guy like Sam Bradford -- he's never played really in the last three years, but he's made more money than most guys in the NFL."

Bennett definitely has a point. I understand the market value comes down to supply and demand, but the truth is paying that much for mediocre QB does cripple the team and takes money away from more talented players at other positions.

Sam Bradford is a poor comparison. He earnings are based on the old draft spot/compensation scale. A system that was so obviously broken it wasn't a problem for either side to change it during the labor negotiations.

Other than that, he's right. QBs are often paid more than their performance would dictate. I think there are a number of reasons beyond just the obvious. I think the extra protection QBs are afforded makes them a more secure investment. Overpaid money on the bench/sideline sucks worse than overpaid money on the field, and QBs are exposed far less than other players. The continued restrictions on defenses means that every defensive player is at a disadvantage.

That said, he should have seen this coming. Did anyone think all the extra money that was going to be floating around from the change in the rookie scale and increased revenue was going to be split evenly across positions on a team?

It's obviously a supply vs demand situation. And whether a QB is "mediocre" or not is completely subjective.

And context DOES matter. It's such a unique, learned skill-set that there's only probably about a dozen good ones in the league at any given moment. Think about that for a second. There's 32 NFL teams. Each carries at least 2 QBs on their game day roster. Most have 1 on the practice squad. And then think about how many college kids are playing QB each year. All of that potential "supply" doesn't even equate to enough good QBs to cover the 32 starters in the NFL.

Then think about how many of the starters are realistically good enough to win a SB. And then think, how many of that group are good enough to actually carry a team and make up for other areas' deficiencies.

Yes Michael Bennett, there's actually very good reason they get paid what they get paid.

True. It's really that simple.
Loom at teams that never really get good enough to win anything. The QB is fumbling,bumbling.... Telegraphing int passes..... Those Teams never had a chance.

Is this "InflateGate"?

QB is one of the few positions effects the whole team, if your QB, sucks look at NYJ, Oak, StL, Tenn, Denver before Peyton, Buff, the best your team will do is middle of the pack. Good QBs on bad team already start int he middle of the pack. DE while important is not the be all end all, look at Dallas compared to a lot of the non playoff teams last year.

I don't think Tannehill is mediocre. He was really good last year until their LT got injured.

His issues are the deep ball and pocket presence. Overall, I think he's a good QB that has had a former idiot GM and an impatient owner contually screwing up the Dolphins. They want to win every year with bandaid patches over big wounds instead of properly building and drafting correctly.

This year they might turn the page, but they still have some holes that can haunt them.

It was funny when he made fun of Bradford for getting hit and making cry face the other game.

Listen up, Michael Einstein. Plumbers don't make that much because there's a ton of them. Brain surgeons make a ton because they're few and far between.

Likewise, the hardest thing to find in the sports world is an elite quarterback. Anyone close to that is going to get paid because so many teams are desperate to find anything resembling one. Relatively speaking, other positions are much easier to fill. It's a rare player that truly separates himself at other positions that makes a significant win-loss difference. Peterson, Watt, Revis, Suh....those rare guys.

Bennett doesn't understand what money is. It's not a "reward". It's a measurement of value, which in turn, is a measurement of rarity. The harder something or someone is to replace, the more valuable they are, and the more money they make. These simple economic truths are as misunderstood in this country as freedom of speech.
