Players didn't mind back then. Some guys don't wear knee pads or thigh pads anymore. If I were the coach I would say you don't wear these pads you don't play. Guys get hurt trying to look cool.
technically they are to wear knee and thigh pads, most put a couple of layers of scotts paper towels in there and call it day. It was an new rule a few years back.

An ex-NFL lineman told me he used disposable diapers as hip pads - still folded, one on each hip.

Another one that the commissioner forgot to discipline, the commissioner is deeply afraid to do the right thing.

His shoulder pads are legal. He wears smaller pads to not get held... He's trying to get to the QBs and be as slippery as possible so olinemen can't grab s hold of him when he's rushing the passer.
