I got watching some tape on our draft picks again, because I'm a draft addict going through withdrawals, and saw this tape that I hadn't watched before. This is Michael Gallup vs Bama.

While it doesn't always give a fair judgement of players, it's always fun to see a prospect play games where his team is just completely overmatched and he's basically left out on his own. That's when I knew Zack Martin was gonna be a stud for example. National championship, Notre Dame vs Alabama, the world's collapsing around him, and he's still beating his man play after play. If a guy can beat elite college competition with no help at all, he's probably going to be a good one.

So here's Gallup, with a bad QB throwing the ball, an offensive line giving said bad QB zero time to throw, and future NFL DBs hanging all over him, and he still goes 5/80. Has a bad drop, but shows some really nice ability to create separation in a very small area and make the catch afterwords. There is one play where he's given space to run (Colorado State catches Bama on a corner blitz) and Gallup pinwheels off a dude and gets 10 more yards Dez style. He also has a Dez-esque reaching grab for a TD at the very end, with a corner draped all over him, that was this close to being in.

lol, at the announcers at the end.

"That looked like a touchdown!"

Come on, man.

I like Gallup, but people are talking about him like he should have been a 1st round pick, which is interesting.

I prefer drafting WR's outside of the first unless you're talking about sure fire #1's, so I like the value but going to wait see on him.

I think the more and more I read and see this guy, the more that I like his fit in our scheme....strong route runner, atheltic and strong...seems like he could be a great fit and its exciting.

Considering we had a 2nd round grade on him I really like the pick. Hopefully after the first quarter of the season we will have a better idea of his ability on a NFL level but usually it takes awhile for rookie WRs to get adjusted to the NFL.

i think the first quarter of the season is going to be all about the running game.....were going to have some ugly ugly games that we will need to win 17-13, 13-10, etc.....

going to need the defense to keep us in the games and the offense to grind it out. ONce our wr's start to gel and bond with dak we should start to know what we have but its probably going to take until at least the half way point before we see it....we just need to weather the initial storm and give the guys time to develop.

I agree we will lean on the running game early. With that said hopefully we can catch some teams slipping on our new talent at WR simply because they have no idea how we will use them.

Was hoping we were changing our scheme and getting away from the back shoulder, Dez Bryant type routes for bigger, stronger WRs.

I thought in that particular game he wasn't getting a lot of separation but played well. That's probably the big worry for me, is that he's not blazing and doesn't generally create a lot of separation. Most of the time he was up against a really quick DB but not a particularly brilliant one. It was good to see him use body positioning and nous, but you see the way he route runs compared to say Ridley and IMO there's a difference.

Agreed.

I think we nabbed him right about where he should have gone.

Doesn't mean he's a bad player, but just not the world beater folks are making him out to be. I think his ceiling is a more well-rounded and consistent T-Will.

Yeah, that's where I'm at too. I'm not expecting him to come out of the gate an all-star, but some have hyped him to the level where it almost seems they are expecting him to immediately be a heavy producer.

Just because we had a 2nd round grade on him, does not mean he was a steal. Other teams may have had a 3rd round grade.
Not saying our scouts are wrong, but it has happened,.
I need to see it on the field. I was ok with the pick, but thought there was value there fordefemse as well. But I am more on board with the pick than I was when first drafted. Maybe because I have to be as a fan.

Even his entire rookie year may not tell us how good he can be. But yes, we should get an indication though. They usually take up to 3 years or that used to be the barometer before players get it. We shall see. But he will be given his opportunities for sure. As the #1 spot is up for grabs.

Gallup will be a big part of this offense. I think him and Hurns will be an interchangeable 1/2.. He has the size and physicality for the position. What Gallup can bring to the offense TWilliams does not. He needs to be on the field getting every opportunity and getting that rapport with his QB. That #1 spot will be his in time. Hurns will be that guy early on.

In those conditions (bad QB, outmatched team, etc.) he was better than Dez would have been. Dez needed closer to perfect conditions to succeed.

I love that he is a very aware route runner.

Sorry to nitpick, but "tape" means All-22 coaches film. This was video from the broadcast. Replace tape with game footage for proper context.

I like Gallup and hope for the best from him but I’m not getting my hopes up. WRs are just so hard to predict from college to the NFL.

Nothing about Gallup jumps out as great when I watch him. But he produced. Guys like Sutton have great height. Ridley has great quickness and route running. DJ Moore had great run after the catch ability and turned slants into TDs. Gallup just looks ok. But he did produce.

So I won’t pretend to be an expert like some around here. I’m hopeful but not expecting anything amazing.

He doesn't have that explosiveness or twitch to create separation on his routes, but I like how crafty he is with his releases.

Watch 1:45. He does a nice job of swatting the CB's hands to beat the jam, so he can get inside and body him out.

2:08 as well. He make a nice stutter-step off the release to get inside, then puts himself right in position for the only window he has between the CB and the safety. He dropped the gimme catch, which was worrying, but I also like how he just puts himself out there no-problem for what was probably to be a hospital ball if he caught it.

That is how he is going to win IMO. We are probably going to be installing a college-style spread with a lot of short passing to both play to Dak's strengths and mask our lack of talent at wideout. I think we're going to be seeing a lot of 5-10 yard kind of throws, and if Gallup can beat jams and body people out on those quick throws like he did vs Bama, he's going to get some catches. He doesn't have to run a perfectly timed Patriots option route or burn a guy 40 yards downfield (though I worry that Linehan's going to try the latter and just send him down the sideline all day like Dez - he's going to flop hard if we try that).

He reminds me, in this clip, of an inconsistent Dez.

If WE had a second round grade on him and got him in the 3rd......that is a steal. What he turns out to be will never change that
