The executors of Michael Jackson's estate are on course to pay off the late singer's $500 million debt by the end of the year.

The singer's finances were a mess when he died in June, 2009, and administrators have been working to make amends for his excessive spending by generating funds for his three children's inheritance by striking various publishing and licencing deals.

It is a shame he needed to use drugs, and they lead to his death. I know the Jackson estate owns the rights to the Beatles music, I am sure there is a TON of money left just in that.

Im pretty sure Sony owns the rights and not the Jackson estate.

Same thing happened to Elvis' estate. He had less than a million in the bank when he died and is now worth who knows how much.

Kind of crazy to see what can happen when the lavish spending ceases and all the income acquiring assets do just that.

That's the difference between wealthy and poor celbrities. Wealthy use their money to make money where as the broke ones spend every dime they have now assuming they'll make a ton more.

It still boggles my mind how some of these athletes/singers/performers etc. can make this kind of crazy $ and not only blow it all, but go millions upon millions in debt.

:banghead:

I think it's pretty cheesy that someone can buy the rights to someone else's work.

I heard at one time that Jackson actually owned the rights to the "Happy Birthday" song.

That's the music biz in a nutshell. Most of the stuff you hear on radio or see on tv would've never made it there had the rights not been acquired by one the the big companies.

I was going to say the same thing. That's the foundation of the entire industry. It's what allows people to make a living doing something they'd probably do for free anyway.

As far as Michael, a lot of this revenue has little to do with his lavish spending and more to do with the fact he was as popular in death as he had ever been. Plus once a guy dies, everyone actually starts paying attention to where every dollar goes and the leeches that once bled him dry at every opportunity suddenly have their trickle go dry.
