Michael Lombardi has an interesting nugget in his notes on nationalfootballpost.com:
Would Jerry ever say such a thing on the record? Of course not. First of all, if he really would like Garrett to get another job, ripping him wouldn't help matters. It'd also be admitting a mistake for Jerry, who valued Garrett so much a year ago that he made him the NFL's highest paid assistant to keep him from leaving for Baltimore or Atlanta.
Garrett gets the in-house blame for the Cowboys' backup QB catastrophe this season. He lobbied for Brad Johnson while there were internal discussions about exploring other options (Chris Simms, etc.).
And the team's two highest-profile offensive players publicly pointed the finger at Garrett at the end of the season. (T.O. did it in the middle of the season, too.)
If Garrett returns to Valley Ranch, his relationship with the receiving corps would be rocky at best. It might be better for everybody involved if he got Mike Shanahan's old job in the Rocky Mountains.

I hear the Cowboys are not sweating the notion of losing Jason Garrett to another team as a head coach. They are actually hoping this might happen.
The fact that Lombardi, a former Raiders executive, was the first to report that Garrett would decline the Lions' interview invitation lends some credibility to the item. By Cowboys, I'm assuming Lombardi means the decision-makers around Valley Ranch. And that leads us right to Jerry Jones. Would Jerry ever say such a thing on the record? Of course not.
