Cowboys want Jason Garrett to go?

Michael Lombardi has an interesting nugget in his notes on nationalfootballpost.com:
I hear the Cowboys are not sweating the notion of losing Jason Garrett to another team as a head coach. They are actually hoping this might happen.
The fact that Lombardi, a former Raiders executive, was the first to report that Garrett would decline the Lions' interview invitation lends some credibility to the item. By Cowboys, I'm assuming Lombardi means the decision-makers around Valley Ranch. And that leads us right to Jerry Jones.

Would Jerry ever say such a thing on the record? Of course not. First of all, if he really would like Garrett to get another job, ripping him wouldn't help matters. It'd also be admitting a mistake for Jerry, who valued Garrett so much a year ago that he made him the NFL's highest paid assistant to keep him from leaving for Baltimore or Atlanta.

Garrett gets the in-house blame for the Cowboys' backup QB catastrophe this season. He lobbied for Brad Johnson while there were internal discussions about exploring other options (Chris Simms, etc.).

And the team's two highest-profile offensive players publicly pointed the finger at Garrett at the end of the season. (T.O. did it in the middle of the season, too.)

If Garrett returns to Valley Ranch, his relationship with the receiving corps would be rocky at best. It might be better for everybody involved if he got Mike Shanahan's old job in the Rocky Mountains.

I hate the Eagles, but how does your statement make any sense? They are in the playoffs right? Mcnabb is playing well, right?

2. The Broncos have a better young offensive coach on their staff in Jeremy Bates than the Cowboys have in offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. The NFL is all about perception, and very few watch tape to learn the real story. What did Garrett do this year to deserve an interview?

If you listen closely the real football experts are all talking about how Jason Garret failed to adjust to the adjustments defensive coordiantors made on him. That was the first domino to fall, and it happened as early as in the first Washinton game when Garrett was out-coached/schemd-out-of calling a running game or using Felix Jones; and the same out-coaching continued since.

That's the root-cause of "all problems Dallas" at the end of the day -- that Garrett's incompetence was the first domino to fall, and over time sytematically led to other dominos falling. Everyone wants to blame the last dominos that fell (i.e. T.O. incident) but the novice-reporters who don't really understand the game technically don't want to do their jobs and dig for hte root cause. But the real knowledgable football insiders turned analysts who know football technically all point to Garrett's root-cause failures.

Fix Garrett's root-cause failures, and then many other problems on offense never emerge. One way to fix that is to replace Garrett altogether and upgrade the Offensive Coordinator position. And don't think the Cowboys don't know this technically either; they do, which is why Garrett is allowed to look for other work, and the Cowboys are privately hoping he gets offered it and goes.

After the initial shock of the meltdown in Philly I was for cleaning house.

Now I think I'd be for Garrett staying and becoming HC.

I don't see Jerry abandoning Jason just yet.

I really wouldn't be surprised if he were HC for next season.

Why would Jerry Jones, after handpicking Jason and making him the highest paid coordinator in football (I think?) and seemingly annointing him the heir apparent, allow Jason to interview ?

And although there may be a league rule that says he has to be allowed to interview for a higher position IF HE WANTS TO, why would he want to interview ? His next interview was supposed to be with Jerry for Wade's job - if there was even going to be an interview...did he need to bone up on his interviewing skills for Jerry ?

I don't understand why people can't see that the next head coaching job of the Dallas Cowboys was Jasdon Garrett's to lose, and he responded by losing it. If you want an analogy to symbolize the Cowboys' woes, then let's try a series of fallen dominos. They are all colerd "offense" and the first on to fall, that let to the others falling, reads "Garrett failed to adjust to other coaches' adjustnets to him". How hard it that for perople to grasp? Really!

Aside from offering even more money, what can Jones actually do to stop Garrett if he wants to leave? Force the issue on the contract length? It would be a promotion (OC to HC), and I doubt Jones can state that Garrett is the de facto HC in waiting at this point if the forms of the Rooney Rule have to be obeyed.

The team does not hope he leaves. That's pure speculation.

Exactly. JJ and JG are close and JJ is not going to "hope" that a 2nd year coordinator who is learning valuable experience will leave.

Not to mention, I believe Garrett will be a very good head coach. I think he is a good coordinator, but I believe he will be an even better head coach. Big difference between the two, just ask Wade.

Well, I hope he leaves but that seems a bit far fetched. If he stays, he needs a tutor or someone to help him with game planning.

Isn't that just great - he's one of the highest paid coordinators in the league and he needs help to game plan. No wonder we had such a **** season.

I would rather promote Garrett to HC and cut ties with Wade than see Garrett leave for another team.

When will Cowboys fans learn?

I hope the Eagles are stupid enough to not give McNabb and new contract and on top of that be even more stupid and go fire Andy Reid.

If Andy Reid was let go we'd have a stupid debate aobut whether he, Shanahan or Garrett should be the the Cowboys next head coach.

Hostile: "I feel exactly the same way."

Again Hostile, I ask you WHY?

When I read opinions from real football experts -- people like Marshall Fauk who technically know the game when they see film -- are repeatedly talking about how Jason Garret failed to adjust to the adjustments Defensive Coordiantors made on him. Ray Lewis was going on and on about how simple the scheme was as the reason they shut it down.

Jason Garrett's incompetence was the first domino to fall...bottom line! So I'm not looking to just blast one guy, but I will expose the root cause! Garrett's getting outcoached was clearly exposed as early as in the first Washinton game when Garrett was out-schemd out of calling a running game or using Felix Jones; and the same out-coaching continued since throughout the year.

That's the root-cause of all problems Dallas at the end of the day -- that Garrett's incompetence was the first domino to fall, and over time sytematically led to other dominos falling, like players over time getting fed up with it. But let's blame them. Garret was also the one who lobbied for Brad Johnson as the backup QB. Jones listened, but let's just blme Jones for this; not Garrett and his QB-playing/coaching expertise! Garrett was 13-3 last year with this year's coach of the year, bit this year he was incompetent without him. Let's blame Jones for this failed offense also.

Everyone wants to blame the last dominos that fell (i.e. T.O. incident, etc.) but the novice-reporters who don't really understand the game technically don't want to do their jobs and dig for hte root cause. But the real knowledgable "football insiders turned analysts" who know football technically all point to Garrett's root-cause failures. (by the way, those are the expert opinions I look to first, not chumps like Ed Werder or Randy Galloway, or even Mickey Spagnola, who means well but really is a novice himself).

But please, tell me why he should be promoted, please!

I dont get these post wanting to promote Tecmo to HC???

When the franchise QB questions the play calling, the team responds by promoting the play caller to head coach???

Looks to me like rewarding mediocricy.....I dont get it.

If we learned on thing from watching Wade and Norv, it should be that the skill set to be a great coordinator is not the same skill set needed to be a great head coach.

I grant the point that JG struggled in his second year as a coordinator. I'll now ask you why that makes him not a good candidate for head coach. What do you think makes a good head coach?
