Michael Sam was the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL and the first openly gay player in the CFL, but he still has his sights set on the ultimate goal of playing in an NFL regular-season game.

Sam said on the Dan Patrick Show that he left the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes largely because he wasn’t getting better in the CFL, and his real focus is on getting better so that he can play in the NFL.

“I never really wanted to go to the CFL, but I did it and I committed to going,” Sam said. “I want to thank the Montreal Alouettes for all they’ve done for me, but I wasn’t getting better as a football player. That was one of the main keys, I wasn’t getting better as a football player. It was a different defense, a defense I wasn’t used to, and all the stuff I learned from the Rams, the Cowboys, I thought I was losing that technique in Montreal.”

Sam says he has no doubt that he can make an NFL roster next season.

“I am a football player, a damn good one too, and I want to prove myself within this league,” Sam said. “I know that I can do this, and I can play in this league.”

They need a Canadian hard Rocks where him and Tebow are on the same team like a buddy cop movie showing the difficulties of being tolerant while being a good chewuzzle soldier. That would actually be watchable unlike the CFL.

Based on that statement, he is just an idiot. Josh Freeman type of idiot.

His career is done taking that stance.

Agreed. He needs to go the way of Tebow.
It's like I understand why it is a story, but if we going to be progressive it needs to stop being a story.

And Michael Sam could probably be good at broadcasting SEC games. He is insightful and an attention seeker.

no one should be surprised at his attitude- there were plenty of hints from the beginning. In the end he is a loser. And that has nothing to do with him being gay.

Sam is still relevant?

Thought he left Montreal to gather himself? Now it's because he wasn't challenged and was losing technique he learned in the NFL?

Riiiiight. Since coming out, the poor guy has been a mental case. He should've kept his sexual preference to himself. It's called privacy. It's what normal people do.

The more articles that came out about him, it seems like the decision to come out publicly was to get attention.

We wouldn't be having any discussion about some undrafted DE if it wasn't for that ESPN sitdown.

A handful of college guys have gone to the CFL to become something in the NFL. Look at Wake. Played in the CFL, signed by the Dolphins and was a good passrusher right out the gate in the NFL.

If Marinelli didn't see any potential then he is done.

Dancing with the stars here he comes.

Well, maybe it's just me but I don't see how sitting at home is going to help the progression of his game either. I don't know.

He's just not very good. Great college player, but they all don't always work out at the pro level.

Get you a job on the SEC Network talking about football.
