MONTREAL (AP) — Michael Sam is stepping away from pro football.

Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL, has told the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes that he is leaving the team.

"The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health," Sam tweeted Friday. "Because of this I am going to step away from the game at this time."

The Alouettes confirmed in a release that Sam has left the club for "personal reasons" and that he has been added to the team's suspended list.

Sam was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Rams, did not make the team, and spent some time on the Cowboys' practice squad before being released.

It's not really news anymore. Once his NFL career never really materialized, I'm guessing his motivation to deal with the media attention that he was still getting just to play in the CFL wasn't there.

Though, I maintain that if he just buckled down and played football and didn't quit twice, the media attention would have just gone away.

So this guy has zero talent?

Nothing?
None at all?

Or just too focused on other things?

He is a lazy, self-absorbed, attention-driven, diva........he came across as someone who expected the league to hand him the keys to the Ferrari, but that didn't happen. When he realized that he would actually have to work for it, even more so when he ended up in the CFL, he couldn't handle it. He is the type of player that seems to need constant and immense coddling. He needs thing to come easy for him, or else he will simply raise the white flag and throw his head in the sand.

He is just the latest in a list of suspect players from Missouri. Another in a long line of players with talent, but there are other factors that contribute to their football downfall.

While it took courage to come out, when he came out smelled of a cry for attention and putting an undue onus on the NFL and its teams to show they were not homophobes. One thing to come out publicly early into his college career or after he was drafted would have been less obvious. He was a marginal talent that probably would have gone undrafted otherwise.
