After they sign Beltre they still pursued Thome, Vlad, Manny Ramiriz and got Napoli (I don't think he was brought in to DH, but this might be Young's thinking). It was like "yeah Mike you are are our man (unless we can get thome or vlad back)!" And they were also floating him around in trades. I just don't agree with management right now.
Do you mean Webb? Yeah I have no ill-feelings toward that move. But again like the rest of the pitchers on this staff, he is another shot in the dark. Which I hope pays off
Thome was being sought as a lefthanded bat off the bench, not as a regular DH, and I don't recall there being any serious attempt to get Manny or Vlad. Whatever interest they showed in Vlad was already past by the time they signed Beltre.
That said, i do believe there was some miscommunication, and while I think it's still clear that he would be the primary DH, you have to look at Napoli and realize he doesn't really have a defensive position either, and ask yourself where his AB's are going to come from. I think the plan was for Young to play some 1B, but Napoli could cut into him there.
