Mickey writes about how this draft is set up as for selecting players for beyond 2023 and goes through players up coming contracts. And as to why sometimes the drafts are really for beyond the upcoming season.
We know this of course, or many understand this.

They set themselves up to select the BPA, but that player may not be for immediate help this season, but for 2024 and beyond.
We know this as well. But it makes for some discussions as to possible future players beyond 2023.

If you're regularly drafting players that you need to contribute immediately then you're doing it wrong. These guys should be penciled in as backups, rooks in development.
If your regularly drafting players that can continue immediately then your doing it right! The cowboys have been very good in finding players all over the draft that can play and play well as needed when injuries happen....i would wager this team is one of the top five in terms of drafting over the past decade

Both are true and great things. If a team can draft well enuff to get guys that contribute now then down the road, thats really the best of both worlds and what the goal should be every year. I think we do both things well. Mick might be understating the obvious.

In a perfect world that would be true but while that’s ideal the FA rules means you have to get them snaps earlier than they actually should
In a few short years you have to pay them
Looking to next year or two when picking is logical. I remember fans complaining about tagging Spencer but that’s exactly what you have to do if you don’t have a replacement waiting to step in. Edge rushers, like QB’s are hard to get so somewhat understandable but the other positions you have to be able to let solid players walk and have a solid replacement waiting

and where has that gotten us? Its not always about the players you draft. Its also about the positions you draft. The team tends to ignore S and DT on draft day and go with re-trends and long shots. It bites us in the A every January.

its a fair question and i would answer by saying its gotten us a consistent relevant performer that has been in playoff contention pretty much every year. I will also say that once we got rid of the crappy head coach (garrett) and brought in a true head coach that we have now gotten to a point where we have had multiple back to back 12 win seasons and are postioned for a very strong 2023-2024 barring major injury setbacks

Cant change the past failures but i would attribute more of it to coaching issues than personel issues.

As for S - this is the best we have been at safety in decades and who the heck knows if they will ever draft a DT...but trading for Hankins is a step in the right diretion

Read it even though he sucks.

Mick’s off-season plan re:draft

1. (Cowboy praise) Write article stating they can now go best player available - check

2. (Cover the Cowboys bases to prepare for criticism) Write article stating that some picks are for the future. Also include why they could draft any possible position and justify why each is a good idea to cover all of the cowboys bases- check

3. (Commence Criticism mitigation) write article post-draft deflecting the criticism stating that you can’t judge a player until after 2-3 years and they had the player high on their board. Conclude that the player selections were a steal. - tbd

4. (I told you so’s and fans aren’t insiders like I am) Find a way to condescend to any fans who aren’t drinking the koolaid. - ongoing

So instead of offering anything constructive, you just want to critique something to complain....CHECK...

Mickey Spagnolia...unliked by fans and unliked even more by his peers.

Why is he still employed? He's a Grade A behind-kisser and Jerry Jones apologist.

Not one ounce of intergity. If I was Missouri's j-school, I wouldn't even admit he's a graduate.

I'd say drafting a G and 1T is essential for both this year and beyond. Let's not forget the injury problems on both lines last year

He probably doesn't like you then either. Any football related comments?

I think if you are planning to contend for a Super Bowl now that you can't afford to draft players (at least not early) who are not immediate help this season. We've got some starting positions that need to be upgraded this year and those should be the focus. Doesn't mean we should ignore a higher-rated player being available, but fix the flaws first if all things are equal (which they probably will be when we draft because the tier usually includes more players of comparable value).
