Also, please do not sign Anthony Brown to a "one-year prove-it deal".

So, so bad.
I would absolutely not be against signing Brown for vet minimum to be a backup. He's better than Joseph or Wright.

Right now, we've got Diggs and Gilmore as starters, Bland as the third corner and Lewis as the primary depth. Wouldn't hurt to have one more depth guy. If Joseph, Wright or a rookie step up, we could always cut Lewis and his contract that's big for a fourth corner.

No thanks. He's the guy QB's and OC's look to whenever a first down is needed. He's been vastly overrated by this organization and fan base for years, just like Jeff Heath was.

I'd rather give the young guys a chance. They either produce or get replaced.
  • Nahshon Wright. They overdrafted him but he's got great size. Competes. Just gets lost in the sauce. Can't pattern match. Maybe a solution for the athletic Tight Ends that are typicaly a mismatch for Safeties and Linebackers.
  • Kelvin Joseph. Again, overdrafted and in this case, ignored multiple red flags. Has talent. May not have the head.
  • Give a ton of snaps to DaRon Bland. He's legit and can give you reps at all 5 DB spots.
  • Same deal for Israel Mukuamu. He's a combo of Bland and Wright. Give him more snaps.
  • Isaac Taylor-Stuart. Low-risk UDFA. Former 5-star recruit with 19 starts at USC, has good size (6'1", 200).

Mickey writes about how this draft is set up as for selecting players for beyond 2023 and goes through players up coming contracts. And as to why sometimes the drafts are really for beyond the upcoming season.
We know this of course, or many understand this.

They set themselves up to select the BPA, but that player may not be for immediate help this season, but for 2024 and beyond.
We know this as well. But it makes for some discussions as to possible future players beyond 2023.
Best to draft for 2023 while we still have an elite quarterback here and a chance to win a historically weak NFC

and where has that gotten us? Its not always about the players you draft. Its also about the positions you draft. The team tends to ignore S and DT on draft day and go with re-trends and long shots. It bites us in the A every January.
We aren’t losing playoff games because of our DTs.

We’re losing because our offense no shows.

Back in the day, this was what the draft was all about because rookies didn't get to play unless injuries got them on the field.

You would get breaks from that for RB's, like DAL moving up to get Dorsett, but that was about it. Most HC's didn't trust rookies on the field in real games.

Now, it's mostly about now. Owners with hair triggers on GM's and HC's has shifted the game.

If you're regularly drafting players that you need to contribute immediately then you're doing it wrong. These guys should be penciled in as backups, rooks in development.
It’s a young men’s league. You no longer have time to sit on the bench and learn behind a veteran. Salary cap doesn’t work that way.

I think if you are planning to contend for a Super Bowl now that you can't afford to draft players (at least not early) who are not immediate help this season. We've got some starting positions that need to be upgraded this year and those should be the focus. Doesn't mean we should ignore a higher-rated player being available, but fix the flaws first if all things are equal (which they probably will be when we draft because the tier usually includes more players of comparable value).
But that's not how the draft works. How many guys do you think our likely to come in and outplay incumbent starters right away? Maybe your first-rounder. If you're super-lucky, maybe two. Certainly not "some," not for a team that's contending for a Super Bowl.

They should get at least three starters from this draft or somethings wrong. We're practically picking in round two this year, I hope they don't try to hit a home run in round one and pick someone with a high floor with low bust potential.

feels like we are an older team with some holes to plug in some areas. the OL is getting older. tyron, martin. and biadasz in his last year. CBs, one is 33, the other one is going to want too much money and not worth it IMHO.

and I hope we don't do a repeat of 2009 draft, going for ST players because we have all the holes covered.

I don’t agree with his Oline comment. I think a G can start and would work. That’s what I have.

Drafting BPA over need is OK, but only up to a point. Players like Parsons and Lamb were BPA picks IMO- and outstanding picks!

There is a salary cap though. With the slotted rookie salary restrictions, young drafted players equate to salary cap savings. Teams win the cap game by drafting players who can play early and often.

BPA is great, but teams are also looking for players who can play now, and contribute immediately. In reality, there is a balance that is struck between two competing objectives.

I'm only talking about the first round and second round. Those guys should be targeted as immediate contributors unless your roster is just so strong a rookie can't improve a starting spot.

Brown is a decent fill-in and third corner. That's what they paid him to be. It's not his fault that the team failed to upgrade the No. 2 corner spot and he had to take it.

Mukuamu does seem to give us another slot option, but I'm just saying I'd rather have Brown on this roster and playing in case of injury than Joseph and Wright. He's good depth, and if you fill we can just easily replace him as depth with a rookie, then just look again at what we got in the second (Joseph) and third (Wright). Sure, we might strike gold like we seem to have with Bland in the fifth, but there's no guarantees.

Read it even though he sucks.

Mick’s off-season plan re:draft

1. (Cowboy praise) Write article stating they can now go best player available - check

2. (Cover the Cowboys bases to prepare for criticism) Write article stating that some picks are for the future. Also include why they could draft any possible position and justify why each is a good idea to cover all of the cowboys bases- check

3. (Commence Criticism mitigation) write article post-draft deflecting the criticism stating that you can’t judge a player until after 2-3 years and they had the player high on their board. Conclude that the player selections were a steal. - tbd

4. (I told you so’s and fans aren’t insiders like I am) Find a way to condescend to any fans who aren’t drinking the koolaid. - ongoing

My plea to the FO is to draft a QB no later than the 3rd round. A lot of good prospects are available.
