Mickey: Do Not Minimize Dak's Availability

What if Landry didn’t have the patience to wait for Staubach?

Starting with Captain America himself, the Roger Staubach story has several what-ifs along the way. The team took a flyer on him, drafting him in the 10th round of the 1964 draft, however, Staubach wouldn’t step onto the field until five years later due to his commitment to the Navy. He even used his military leave to show up at Cowboys rookie camp. And when he finally did arrive in Dallas, he found himself in a quarterback battle with Craig Morton. In fact, it was a timeshare unlike any other, as head coach Tom Landry would alternate between the two QBs within the games. It wasn’t until Staubach’s third season in the league at the age of 29 that he finally took over as the team’s undisputed starting quarterback, where he led the Cowboys to four Super Bowls, winning two of them.

What if Jimmy sided with Walsh over Aikman?

From one Super Bowl-winning Hall of Fame quarterback to another, the team selected Troy Aikman number one overall in the 1989 NFL draft. Unlike Staubach, Aikman started right away, and it was rocky to say the least. Jimmy Johnson inherited a terrible team from the legendary Landry, and they finished 1-15 in their first season. Despite their draft investment in Aikman, Johnson loved his former Miami Hurricane quarterback Steve Walsh and selected him second overall in the supplemental draft that same year. Aikman missed five games in his rookie season, and Walsh stepped in and helped Dallas win their only game of the year. In the end, Walsh was traded to New Orleans a year later, but Jimmy’s love for his former college quarterback created some uncertainty as to what direction they might go.

What if Romo was traded to the Saints?

The Cowboys were in quarterback purgatory after Aikman retired, and it wasn’t until Tony Romo showed up that new life emerged. Actually, it was four years after he arrived before Romo-mania took off. That’s because he was an undrafted free agent who was buried on the depth chart for his first few years in the league. After some impressive pre-season outings, some took notice, including his former quarterback coach Sean Payton, who had just become the head coach in New Orleans. Payton offered a third-round pick for Romo, but Jerry Jones wouldn’t give him up for anything less than a second-round pick. A deal was never done, and by Week 6 of the 2006 season, a new era in Dallas had begun as Romo took over the starting job, replacing Drew Bledsoe.

What if the Cowboys never drafted Dak?

Fast forward ten years, and we find ourselves in another unexpected passing of the torch at quarterback. After the Cowboys missed out on two of their QB targets in the draft, Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook, they eventually “settled” on Dak Prescott at pick 135. Prescott entered his rookie season fourth on the depth chart behind Romo, Kellen Moore, and Jameill Showers. Injuries to Romo and Moore opened the door, and Prescott’s performance moved him to the top spot by the start of the regular season. And he never let go. Prescott had an impressive rookie season. It was so good that Jason Garrett made the tough decision to stay with Dak even after Romo was healthy again, leaving Cowboys fans with one of the biggest hypotheticals in franchise history...

The Cowboys' quarterback situation has had so many crazy backstories that go back many decades. Even the Danny White/Gary Hogeboom QB controversy was something fans of the ‘80s had to endure. We can point to so many different instances where the franchise was super close to leaning the other way, and it could’ve meant the legacy of some of our all-time favorites never happened.

How many games did he play during those times?
Games missed due to injury in Romo's career:

2008: 3 (broken thumb)
2010: 10 (broken collarbone)
2013: 1 (suffered back injury that forced him out of the final game)
2014: 1 (broken bones in back)
2015: 12 (broken collarbone twice)
2016: 9 (compression fracture in back during the preseason, was active as a backup QB from November on)

So, in all, Romo missed 36 games due to injuries across eleven seasons as the starter. 21 of those were in his final two seasons.

By comparison, Dak has now missed 25 games due to injuries across nine seasons as the starter. However, 11 of those were in 2020 with the broken lower leg.

So, overall, fairly similar.

No, I had to lay out the facts because apparently, you're delusional whatever memory and disdain you have for this guy you don't have the facts..

whatever it is you're making it up you're trying to diminish it one of the best starts ever to a career by a quarterback by saying it's not him he's only had one moment since his rookie year that's it one moment...

that's all you can find dude give it up you're wrong I don't think anybody's going to agree with you..

I'm going to say it again, he's had one of the best starts ever toa career, from his rookie year all the way till now it has never stopped or let up, do you understand that I mean you don't get it I'm not even a fan of him or any of the teams he's ever played with,

the man deserves more respect than he's getting, and I know that's hard around here because our own quarterbacks don't get respect but this is indisputable no matter what you say it's not going to change the fact that he will go down as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play

. He's going to be on the goat status at least top 10 right now, he can end up on the Mount Rushmore of NFL qbs..
I just don’t like the kid, I think I’m allowed one disapproval

Dak forced the team to give him a 4 year deal and then did it again and did so as the highest paid player in NFL history. The 4 year deal is unique to Dak. Every other QB has taken a longer deal and this gives teams room to move money around. If you look at my first post, Dak has a cap hit 22m dollars more than Mahomes.

This is Dak's fault and it was his choice. Its a choice no other QB is making and it is hurting the team.
you realize that's payback for Jerry being Jerry that's Jerry's fault literally put the man in jeopardy and put him on the franchise tag and instead of being congratulated for being a leader not threatening a holdout making every practice every OTA every training camp and coming to every game and playing full out got his ankle snapped off on the franchise tag and he got paid but instead of getting an early contract in a vote of confidence from his owner of course he took a shorter contract jerry didn't appreciate we have a quarterback that never had to threaten to hold out never been arrested since he's been a cowboy been nothing but a team man a family man he's been 100 percent a leader he didn't even do what CD did CD Lamb did not need to threaten the holdout he was going to get paid just like Parsons right now is at Ota's if I see him at camp that's what you should do when you're under contract you show up you get paid when you get paid and you will get paid the fact is Prescott never threatened that never needed to always got his money but Jerry didn't come to him and offer him a 10 year contract worth a lot he waited put the man on a franchise tag he waited till the last minute again last year that's what happens now the quarterbacks in full control he didn't take it too lightly his agent bent Jerry over and Jerry conceded.

Jerry put himself in that position but Josh Allen just renewed his contract for more money guaranteed he's not helping Buffalo I don't think it's a 10 year contract as a matter of fact I don't know any 10 year contract except for Patrick Mahomes patrick Mahomes did that for longevity but every so often they bump his pay up so you might want to pay attention they keep giving him more bonus money and more guaranteed money every time another person signs a contract therefore you don't know all the details he's not such a team player that you think yes he did the right thing gonna be around for a really long time and a really good situation but Prescott was not treated like that show me one of our players that did get that you know the going into year four but during the offseason when you could have two years left on your contract and getting paid early getting extra bonus money and saying hey I'll take a longer deal if it hopes the team but where is Jerry ever done this what's a dac ever do anything that Jerry wanted..

By the way you're completely wrong just like the other guys keep stopping you in your tracks it isn't how you're trying to make out how much money he's making this year is holding us back in free agency they got plenty of money way more than your 5 billion cap estimation it's a lot more than that but I want to ask you where's that extra long contract that CD Lam took that Osa took that before that Ezekiel Elliott took I don't remember any of these other players giving Jerry any kind of team friendly deal and what you call it the length like going extra long..

And to add to that you're even more wrong because this contract's not that displaced from rest of everybody else's contracts when you look at guaranteed money it was only one million more than Desean Watson and Prescott done in a hell lot more for the Cowboys than Watson did for the Browns browns and other quarterbacks have been really close and guaranteed money but right now Josh Allen technically is the highest paid quarterback because he has the most guaranteed money I don't know the details but I know in my opinion that's how you gage a contract is guaranteed money not average salary...

so There's a whole lot of quarterbacks making within 5 million per year that's had close to the same amount of guarantees it's not that far off yeah I'll admit press got stuck at the Jerry because Jerry didn't do the right thing knowing his player probably would spend his whole career here and just at that first contract pay him early and then try to do that mahomes type contract he didn't do it..

Cowboys' 2025 OL depth chart prediction

  1. LT Tyler Guyton
  2. LG Tyler Smith
  3. C Cooper Beebe
  4. RG Tyler Booker (R)
  5. RT Terence Steele
  6. OT Asim Richards
  7. C/G Brock Hoffman
  8. G Robert Jones
  9. G Saahdiq Charles
  10. OT Anaji Cornelius (R)
While this is how we predict the OL depth chart right now for the Cowboys, it's far from set in stone. Second-year player Nathan Thomas could push either Robert Jones or Saahdiq Charles for a roster spot as could T.J. Bass. This could create for an interesting position battle once training camp/preseason finally gets underway in a little over a month from now.
