UH oh, were in trouble possibly zoners, mickey said when i asked him a question about doug free OT

he is being moved back inside to Guard,
so now, whom is our OT backup?
sure isnt mcquistan

doesnt sound good zoners;

Most likely they are cross-training him in hopes of taking him to games as a guard/tackle. Last year, McQuistan was carried on the game-day roster because he knows how to play both tackle spots and guard (although he isn't that good at it).

Look at it like the Holland move. He's learning the center position not because he isn't a good guard but because if he goes to games as a backup, he needs to be able to do more than play guard, plus it saves us having to waste a roster spot on a backup center, too.

Lots of cross-training going on right now with players who have been here long enough to know what they are doing at their primary backup spot.

*Backup QB Jon Kitna and second-team center Cory Procter had problems with exchanges. They had two dropped snaps. Montrae Holland, who is filling in for Kyle Kosier (foot) at left guard with the starting unit, worked on center exchanges before practice.

Hey said, "They've got him working inside at guard. I think that's kinda where he left off last year. He's going to have to make his mark there."

Clearly, he's confusing Free with McQuistan.

I know he said "Doug Free," I'm just saying he got confused, because Free didn't play guard last year at all. Heck, he couldn't even remember who impressed him the week before.

Free has never played guard that I can remember, he's always been a tackle.

I've certainly never read about Doug free playing guard since being drafted by the Cowboys.

And we were hurting something fierce at left guard last season, the staff never gave Freeby a look inside despite guard being a problem position for us.

I concur.

It does sound like he mixed up McQuistan and Free.

It does sound like he confused them, but I don't think we should be surprised with who is working at different positions right now. Lots of experimenting going on right now with the backups for versatility purposes.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Free spends some time working at center during OTAs and camp.

Getting ready to blog and podcast your spot on with Smokey from Tuesday.

Just got done listening and at one point you mention that the Cowboys were moving Doug Free moving 'back' inside to Guard.

Were you meaning Pat McQuistan?

Here's the audio...

Mick on Doug Free

I see some people are already running with this as some sort of small breaking news thing because I guess most still had hope that Free would be the answer at LT once Flozell hangs it up.

Can you clarify for me.

Thanks.

So this now has me worried that we really don't have a solid answer as to who would be the backup LT if Flo went down.

And please don't tell me it's Leonard Davis.

???

If Free was playing guard in an effort to increase his flexibility as a backup, I'm fine with it.

If Free was playing guard because he can't handle tackle, I say cut the guy now and get yourself someone who can. This team has and has had enough players who can't play that they're trying to label as guards. (Marten, McQuistan, and now Free?)

That said, I don't expect the Cowboys to call me and let me know which is the case, so I'll eagerly await any updates on where he's playing.

Why on earth would he say that Free played guard last year?
