I put this in another thread, but I wanted to see what some of you think about some mid to late round defensive front 7 players, so I made its own thread since it isn't a real busy time now.
This by all means isn't all the mid to later round prospects we might look at on defense in the front 7, but it's some that I like and want to get some opinions on.
DE:
While I like Canty, Spears, Hatcher and Ratliff, I'm not so sure that Phillips is that sold on them. We could look at some later guys to bring to Dallas.
In Wade Phillips scheme the DE's shoot upfield at the snap and penetrate immediately. They only control one gap and don't have to sit and read, but rather attack the ball. They put much more pressure on the QB than Parcells read and react DE's did and since they attack at the snap, quickness and explosiveness are much more important than they were to us last year.
Size is important too, I understand, but quickness is much more called for in Wade's scheme than it was in Bill's.
I don't think we'd need to get a guy in round 1 or even 2, so someone like Carriker isn't anyone I'm even considering. I'm looking at mid to later rounds and here are a few of the guys that I think we might look at:
Turk McBride: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/dt/turkmcbride.html
Very quick off the snap and should be able to play Phillips scheme well. His first step is very good.
Ryan McBean: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/dt/ryanmcbean.html
Good quickness, strength and height. Long frame and could fit really well at DE.
Ray McDonald: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/de/raymcdonald.html
A bigger 4-3 DE that could switch to 3-4 DE. Is sort of a tweener in a 4-3 but would fit right in at DE in our 3-4.
Kareem Brown: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/dt/kareembrown.html
Very athletic with good size and quickness. Didn't play up to his potential at Miami, but that could be because he didn't have an ideal position. He's a bit of a tweener like McDonald, but again, would fit nicely at 3-4 DE.

May be a tad too small for DE in Phillips scheme, but could be a really good situational rusher. Very quick.
At NT I like:
Paul Soliai: http://www.nflfans.com/x/2007/showplayer.php?key=Paul Soliai
I know he's been mentioned here a lot, but I do like him at NT and think he's someone who we could really take a hard look at. Perfect for NT.
There just aren't too many NT prospects that I really like this year.
AT ILB:
I'm not real sold on what we have, but I do think it's pretty adequate inside and will do. Of course Patrick Willis is a blue chip player, but I'm not really talking about first round prospects. Those are talked about plenty enough. Like I said, I'm looking at the mid to later rounds. A couple of guys I like at ILB are:
David Harris: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/ilb/davidharris.html
He's not a great prospect like Willis, and he's a little stiff, but I think he has good instincts and the size to play inside in a 3-4.
Buster Davis: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/ilb/busterdavis.html
I know, I know... he's too short. Still, I loved watching the guy play and his instincts are top notch. In a later round (if he lasts) I wouldn't mind at all getting him, letting him be a special teams demon and see if he can turn into another Sam Mills. He's like a fire hydrant and he plays with a lot of leverage.
Anthony Waters: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/ilb/anthonywaters.html
He's got perfect size for inside in a 3-4 and his intagibles are there. He's coming off of injury but that's why he'll be available in later rounds. If and when he fully recovers, he should be a very good inside guy. I'd love to see what Phillips could do with him. He hits like a freight train.
At OLB:
I could see us using our #22 pick on an edge rusher. Still, I'm going to look at mid to later round picks because those aren't as well known around here as the Spencer/Woodley/Moss types.
Quentin Moses: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/de/quentinmoses.html
Not really a sleeper or anything, but if he slips far enough, he'd definately be worth a later pick to take a chance on. He has terrific physical ability and is smart. If his senior season is an anomaly, he could be a great one.
Dan Bazuin: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/de/danbazuin.html
Great intangibles and a pretty good athlete with good size.
Bryan Robison: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/de/brianrobison.html
Not really a little known guy around here because of all the UT fans, but still a great athlete and a good prospect for OLB. He has terrific numbers which prove his athleticism and could surprise if everything happened to click for him at OLB.
Those are a few players who I think could possible end up on our roster with some non-premium picks. I think all of them really have a good chance to be real players in Phillips 3-4 and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us actually draft a couple of them.
There are plenty of guys I like at CB, S, WR, etc. but I wanted to only take a look at front 7 defensive players for our scheme.
If anyone has someone who they thinks belongs on this list, please list them and let us know why you think they'd fit in Wade's system.
