Bobby Knight: Nobody on the Cowboys came out and did their jobs.

Stephen A. Smith: If the lockerroom has to be filled with choir boys why do you need a coach? Don't you think this all falls at the feet of Wade Phillips?

Bobby Knight: I agree with you but you gotta have guys in the lockerrom who says, Get off your *** and play and do your job.

Bobby Knight: But you don't need to do that in the press.

Bobby Knight: We had guy named Ronald Ross and he was great leader and made people better. Most people think that when you say that, you think the player is able to do that because he is talented. However, but the player makes his teammates better because he plays hard because he does and demands it from everyone else.

Bobby Knight: There isn't anybody in the Cowboys lockerroom that does that.

That is crucial. It not just the talent. Even marginal talents can execute correctly. In many cases, their lack of talent makes them pay attention to the execution piece, which you kept hearing was a problem.

The more God-given talent one has, the natural inclination is to rely on that more, especially if they aren't necessarily the most studious individual. That is why this team was called "dumb". We had a lot of talent that didn't care enough to execute and do their jobs. Everyone wants to be a star. We have too many and not just on the helmets.

That is why when Coach Parcells came here, he felt he had to deconstruct some of the players and make them "earn the star". When he left, that evaporated and our superstar Owner/GM allowed the celebrity syndrome to creep right back in like it never left.

I thought this is what Zach Thomas was for?

Sarcasm aside, I don't think Zach Thomas failed, I think the poisonous atmosphere in the lockeroom, the cliques and Wade Phillips laid back attitude was just a little too much.

Alexander, I know you are against bringing someone like Ray Lewis and I was too when it was suggested last year. However, I believe he would definately provide some leadership on this team.

Like Deion Sanders stated during the Ravens/Cowboys broadcast, players respect Ray Lewis and were feared letting him down.

We have none of that in Dallas. As a matter of fact, Bradie James, one of the leaders on defense spent his time yesterday ripping sandwhich boards off fans and laughing at the idea that Wade Phillips would start getting tough.

I think we overestimated Zach Thomas. His statements where he felt "uncomfortable" not playing the true "Mike" position led to his brand of leadership not take hold. Just because he flashed his Pro Bowl resume wouldn't impress anyone if he didn't play at a high level. Let's be honest here, he really wasn't that good. He would have done better in an environment like New England where "team" comes first and it isn't just a word. Expecting him to come in and work a leadership enema on a team that badly needed it was a bit too much. He simply couldn't perform at a high enough level to back up his talk with credibility.

Alexander, I know you are against bringing someone like Ray Lewis and I was too when it was suggested last year. However, I believe he would definately provide some leadership on this team.

If Lewis is still able to produce at a high level, yes. It is all about the production. He can come in here and yell and hop up and down and bring "street cred" but unless he's a good fit in the defense, it won't matter. The first time he has a breakdown or misses a tackle, nobody will care that he's supposed to be a leader. I don't think he would do well in this defense. He's better off staying right where he is.

Like Deion Sanders stated during the Ravens/Cowboys broadcast, players respect Ray Lewis and were feared letting him down.

So Lewis would step off a plane from Baltimore and get that respect? As we saw with Thomas, unless he can excel, these players with all their mental insecurities and problems will tune him out eventually.

We have none of that in Dallas. As a matter of fact, Bradie James, one of the leaders on defense spent his time yesterday ripping sandwhich boards off fans and laughing at the idea that Wade Phillips would start getting tough.

Bradie James was already installed as a "leader" on defense. Adding Thomas only benefitted him, IMO. He couldn't step in here and take over that role. I have said it all along, this team has some leadership issues and until they go away, things are going to continue to repeat themselves. I think James made a great step up in his play this year and finally is finding that zone where his play equals his reputation. Adding another de facto leader at the same position isn't going to work. He got some good mentoring from Thomas and we need a young player to be his sidekick, not a recycled veteran like Lewis.

Nice read Alexander. I myself was a bit surprised as to how quick some of the groundwork BP laid down was torn out to repave the superstar glittering image. Substance can't be replaced with image. Not saying that they didn't have substance before... but it is sorely lacking today IMO.

ie. Hard Knocks, Pac Man signing, etc.

BK is dead right on this but it still falls on the HC to instill his will upon the team and take controll. WP can't or doesn't know how to do this.

They should be getting ripped.

Jerry will sign Ray Lewis and cure all.

This is why I want Ray Lewis on the team. He will make everyone accountable for their actions. He is one of the most feared and respected players in the game. We might have to switch to a 4-3.

Zack Thomas had a good year for us. Perhaps people expected too much from him. Zack is a MLB and has played out of postion.

Eh, he's not really ripping the Cowboys, just saying what he feels the problem is. Of course, I doubt he's spent much time in their locker room or in the huddles, but he could be right.

I can dream... hopefully it will be a reality. This D has no personality and we need one.

I am more worried about the leadership on offense actually. Romo has not stepped up.

You are right. Unfortunately you can't teach leadership. Leaders are not made , they are born.

And without a strong offensive coordinator guiding the ship, we will sink. Your OC cant have the same personality as your star QB with a laid back HC running the show.

Romo has regressed.

Bottom line is, this roster was built for a 3-4 and it would take too much time and money to turn this into a 4-3 defense for a guy who's passed his prime and only has a year or two left of elite play.

Bobby Knight is Parcells' BFF. 'Nuff said.

just started to post that when I saw your reply. You can bet Knight is saying EXACTLY what Parcells told him about the Cowboys lockerroom.

So which player failed most prominently in this regard? To me it has to be Romo. The QB MUST be the leader of your team. When he is not a strong leader you have huge problems.

Oh, I don't think Parcells has any clue about what goes on in our locker room... He hasn't been here for two years now.

Though he probably did tell Knight the things we've heard, like "A couple years after I'm gone, you'll never know I was here."

Basically, Knight is just piling on with the common perception that his buddy was a genius who cleaned things up and now Bozo Jerry has let things go to hell. Which may be true, but I think Knight's ripping us primarily to make his buddy look better. I doubt he had any comment on the locker rooms of the Packers or Jax or Cleveland.

Yes, I know, but like it or not, Parcells has 2 SB wins, 3 SB appearances, and re-built 4 horrible franchises. The Pats, The Jets, The Cowboys and The Dolphins. That's pretty powerful argument in his defense.

He was certainly not perfect in Dallas, but he knows a lot more about winning football than Jerry and Wade.
