I just watched a bunch of backs on draftbreakdown. I came away very impressed with Mike Davis. This guy has taken some criticism lately about his supposed display of "Clowney syndrome" during the 2014 season. I guess some are of the opinion that he wasn't in great shape, didn't play with great effort, etc. I'll tell you what... tough to tell on film.

He's got a great RB build at 5'9 217. Compact, powerful, low to the ground. Plays with really nice balance and burst. He's a smooth athlete for a slightly bigger back, and has a really nice feel for space. Always seemed to be falling forward and nudging himself through small creases for the extra yard or 2 at the end of runs.

He looks more than capable of predominately being that no-nonsense, "dirty yards" runner that we want. He's also got enough lateral agility and open field speed to warrant a reasonably high pick. Nothing tremendous in the way of receiving out of the backfield or blocking, but he looked satisfactory in those areas.

We talk at length about the Gurleys, Gordon, Colemans, etc. But I honestly think that a guy like this at the end of R3 would be a nice match of ability v. value.

I like him in the 4th or so a lot more than I like Gordon in the first or Coleman in the second.

Agreed. I still think I like Gurley at 27 more than anything... think he's a special player. But I agree, if I can't get Gurley, I like Davis even in the 3rd as much or more than the other combinations (Ajayi/Duke/Abdullah in the 2nd, etc.).

Yea, I'd probably take Gurley at 27.

I actually like Ajayi quite a bit, would take him in the second, but beyond that, I wouldn't take a back in the first two rounds unless Gordon slips to the second.

I view Davis' upside as a Frank Gore of the past couple years. Reliable guy who will probably get you 4 YPC and is ready for the ball whenever called upon, but doesn't do anything spectacular. Good guy to have and will probably end up being a pretty good value where he is drafted, just not sure I'd draft him to be my feature back. Depends on what we are looking for and how the coaches feel about a platoon at RB I guess.

Gore is actually a really good comparison. I think his upside is closer to Gore in his prime than Gore of the past couple years though. I would be overjoyed to get a guy who spends his career at 90% of Gore in the 3rd round.

I've been talking about this guy for awhile. He's top 5 of the RBs in this draft for me.

His build and style remind me of Emmitt. He often gains yards when there didn't appear to be an opening. His top speed is limited, but his 10 yard time is right there with Gordon.

I have not researched his character issues, but if he had any it didn't seem to affect him on the field in the top conference in college football.

Haven't watched much on him. His YPC leaves a lot to be desired.

College stats don't have a lot of value in draft analysis other than obvious things like fumbles. There have been players that had 22 sacks in 1 college season that couldn't make an NFL roster.

I'll grant you that stats can be overvalued, but to out and out dismiss them like that is silly. If I'm looking for a big play WR, his yards per reception are important. Likewise, if I'm looking for a RB, his YPC against college competition should give a pretty good indication of what type of back he is.

That being said, we need a plugger to get dirty yds, so Davis may be exactly what we're looking for. As I said, I haven't watched enough to form an opinion on him
