BACK-UP QB IN DALLAS

Last year they Cowboys had a very impressive young quarterback named Matt Moore, who they signed from Oregon State as a college free agent much like Tony Romo. Moore was very impressive, he had poise, he had an arm and he looked like he could be the third for Dallas last year. But the Cowboys outsmarted themselves and tried to sneak Moore through the wire and he ended up starting some games for the Carolina Panthers. The one thing you NEVER DO with the waiver wire is try and sneak, quarterbacks, offensive and defensive lineman through, it rarely ever works. Some other team claims them and your plans are ruined.

Often times there are some very good players on the wire and teams don't make enough moves, but when you have a quarterback, you have to be very careful. Now the Boys are looking for a third and possibly a second as Brad Johnson is not a long term answer if something were to happen to Tony Romo. Here is the story

The Cowboys will have to address this need in the up and coming weeks and Chris Simms would be a great option. Working with Jason Garrett in the Cowboy offense could only help Simms as he comes back after being off for two years.

But, until the Bucs make a move with Simms, its all wishful thinking on the Cowboys part. One thing going in the Cowboys favor is that Bruce Allen the Bucs GM and the Cowboys get along very well. So, if and when the Bucs make their move, you know Dallas will be involved.

The decision to sneak Moore onto the PS was very short-sighted. There was a lot of trash at the bottom of the roster that could have been dumped to keep him on the roster.

We'll just have to work on grooming another QB. Hopefully Bartel shows enough to be our developmental QB and another backup becomes available making Johnson expendable. I don't think he has enough arm to run our offense.

I think the way the Cowboys saw it was that they would have been grooming Moore to be the backup to Romo. With only 3-4 years of rights to a player they basically would have been grooming him for another team if he showed starting ability.

And then you trade him for a nice, fat pick. There is nothing wrong with investing in a QB, even if you already have one.

You can't trade a free agent, and nobody will give you anything for an unproven guy which he still would be with Romo starting.

Does Matt Shaub, AJ Feeley or Rob Johnson ring a bell?

All three were backups who showed starting potential, and were traded for some very high picks. Feely and Johnson flamed out, while the jury is still out on Shaub. Heck there were some here who wanted to send Atlanta a fisrt round pick for Shaub, to start in front of Romo.

You mean like Greenbay did for years with guys like Hasselbeck and Burnell turn both those guys into draft picks

People tend to forget how well Chris Simms was playing when he got hurt. I would love to have him on board as a backup to Romo.
