According to ESPN's Todd Archer, McCarthy wanted a five-year contract and Jones wouldn't deviate from a three-year offer.

"While no financial figures were discussed, the length of a proposed agreement was a sticking point," Archer writes. "McCarthy was seeking a five-year deal, according to multiple sources, while Jones was sticking with three."

This report fully vindicates the Cowboys' decision. It may also explain why it took a full week for the McCarthy situation to resolve itself.

What’s asinine about wanting security? That’s a ridiculous statement.

But hey Jerruh loves you!
McCarthy already was given a 5 year deal which he proved to fail with come playoff time. Now he wanted another 5 year deal? Pfft, get out of here with that. He deserved no more than a 3 year deal at most. He's lucky he was even offered a 3 year deal.

I mean if the Jones's were serious about keeping him then money shouldn't be the issue or the length of the contract. The facts are that our GM doesn't like to pay HC's and has very little respect for what they do. I'm not even advocating for MM but if I'm going to have to put up with helicopter rides and someone pulling the strings, I'm going to try and get as much as I can. As Saul said so eloquently, "...everyone knows this".

For some reason the Dallas media is putting out a lot of positive articles on the hiring of assistant coaches. I believe you hit the nail on the head.

This is where I come down as well. Mike did not succeed in the postseason— and continuing to trade on his “SB championship” from years ago is thin ice.

The GB loss was the worst playoff loss in franchise history. For him to follow that up with 2024 does not warrant a 5 year deal.

I know he views himself as a “winner” and he has every right to negotiate his value— but as we can all see— no one else in the NFL thought high enough of him to offer a job

I fault the FO for a ton of things— including failing to fire Mike after the GB debacle. But I won’t fault them for passing on doling out another 5 year contract to a guy who hasn’t achieved anything of significance in the playoffs in Dallas

Asinine? It's asinine to call someone asinine for wanting job security.

If you want an out at three you sign the five and fire him after three. That's what normal people do.

But we're not talking normal are we? We're talking Booger-nomics where cheap is the best bang for the buck.

Yet Schottenheimer got a four year deal so what's asinine again?

Not really. There is no salary cap on coaching.

A shorter deal is only because the Jones’ are too cheap to hire a coach when he still has years left on his contract, meanwhile they’re raking in billions of dollars.

Truth is. If you’re going to re-sign McCarthy you do it because you believe he’s the right man for the job. Not because you think maybe he’s ok, but you’re not willing to risk an extra couple years on the deal that you may have to pay-out if you want to fire him before then.

Cheap, weak, ineffective leadership. Par for the course with this FO.
