He is listed as the assistant head coach and linebackers coach for SF. Can he come to the Cowboys as just the DC or will he have to be an Assistant Head Coach as well?

I would like to see

HC Ron Rivera
DC Singletary
OC Garrett

If we get permission to interview him he can have any job.

Any coach under contract must have permission to interview with another team, for any position, except HC. If Mike S is under contract, then the 49ers would have to let him interview before we could even have this discussion.

I'm guessing you think both would come here?

I guess because he was a great LB for the Bears...

Seriously though, Mike Nolan has worked with him for a few years now and it doesn't look like he has any desire to give him the DC position for the Niners.

He's just a hot name.

Intensity--I think people think intensity is more important than knowledge or ability to teach.

He was a great player and a great guy--saw him around Baylor a few times--but I doubt we know much about how good a coach his is/will be.

Same as the much love for Rivera.Being a good player or a coordinator will not make someone automatically a good head coach.

Don't think you can say not coach Spectre. He's basically the Jason Garrett of the defensive side of the ball in the NFL. A very hot, up and coming coach on the defensive side of the ball.

And I believe he is actually listed as assistant head coach/defense, not just linebackers dannyboy. Check the niners web site.

Well, I will rely on Mike Nolan's opinion. From what I've read in the SF area papers, Nolan wants a more experienced person handling the defense. I read one article that stated most of Singletary's responsibilities revolved around managing the coaching staff and practice. That is not coordinating a defense.

He's just well thought of in the league. Of course he doesn't have a record as a coach to go on, but most up-and-comers don't unless they succeeded at coaching in college.

People tend to like his attitude and his football IQ. That he's coached in a 3-4 defense with San Francisco and a very flexible defense with the Ravens, makes him a little more attractive to me.

That is actually coordinating a defense. A defensive coordinator is a delegator just like the head coach. He delegates what needs to be done to the position coaches and they coach the players up. If you've ever watched Mike Zimmer at practices he roams from position to position and jumps in with information only if he thinks it needs to be done. So he is basically "managing the [defensive] coaching staff and practice"

Also, if you are so willing to trust Mike Nolan you should look up some of the quotes he's said about Mike Singletary. He is fully confident that Singletary will be a head coach one day and is always gushing about how impressed he is with Singletary.

Mike Nolan has worked with him for a few years now and it doesn't look like he has any desire to give him the DC position for the Niners.

Nolan, like many offensive coordinators turned head coaches, hasn't given him the defensive coordinator spot because Nolan hasn't been ready to give that up yet, until recently.

That said, it is interesting that they've looked at other people in San Fran for the defensive coordinator spot. Could be a sign that they expect to lose Singletary when Norv brings him to Dallas. Or it could be ownership meddling, notoriously bad ownership in San Fran, or it could simply be what you suggest. It will be interesting to see what happens with Singletary.

We will agree to disagree. Singletary is not coordinating the defense, Mike Nolan is. He wants an experienced coordinator so that he can concentrate on game management, not defense on a down by down basis.

Your comment about interviewing a DC because they might lose Norv, who would take Singletary, doesn't make much sense to me.

If Singletary had been an average LB for the Seattle Seahawks (e.g.), instead of the SB Champ Bears, we wouldn't be talking about him right now.

Just to be clear, I agree with you that Nolan has been coordinating that defense. I was trying to make the point that most of a defensive coordinator's work is managing coaches and players. That was my point. Sorry to be confusing.

Secondly, I can't give you facts or examples of Singletary's coaching that will prove he is a good coach because I'm not part of the nfl fraternity. But there is a buzz about him just like there is a buzz about Garrett among NFL coaches and GMs. There is a reason that is the case, whether they are interviewing possible defensive coordinators or not.

He's no more or less of a "good candidate" as Jason Garrett.

I'd rather go with the unknown (Rivera) then the guy that's a known failure (Turner).
