Mike Vick not comfortable with backup role
Posted by Mike Florio on May 2, 2010 8:36 PM ET
After the 2009 season ended, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick made clear his desire to become a starting quarterback again. At one point, he openly spoke about his preference to play for the Panthers. Even former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said that Vick "definitely deserves" a chance to be a starter.

He also eventually indicated that he'll accept his role in Philly, and that he "can't be a disgruntled employee, because that's not who I am."

But after Vick's first offseason minicamp as the second-string quarterback of the Eagles, there are signs that he could be considering changing into someone else. "It's different running with the two's," Vick said Sunday, per DelcoTimes.com. "I never had to do that before. Even when I got here last year I was running with the three's but that was expected. Now I'm running with the two's and it's full-time and this is my permanent job. So it's a different feel but at the same time what I say to myself is just try to get better as a quarterback."

Though he chose his words carefully, the message is clear. He still wants to be a starter. And if starter Kevin Kolb struggles to start his first season as a starter, it's hard not to wonder whether Vick will start pushing the buttons of some of the guys who supposedly voted unanimously for him as recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award.

UPDATE: Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer concludes that Vick is OK with his current role, based largely on the same comments. (Yes, the same McLane who reported that Donovan McNabb imminently would be traded to the Rams. Then again, he never killed Terry Bradshaw.)

You have to understand, these are the sort of people whos reality doesnt quite fit what you think of as realism. In his mind he was signing back into the life of money here and there, and women all over and the work would be done for him.

Reality woke him up and now hes starting to complain about it before he re slips back into his dreams.

Well maybe he'd be more comfortable being out of the league and not even playing NFL football, at all. The guy is blessed beyond belief to even be allowed another shot to be on an NFL team and he should just keep his mouth shut and work hard. No one wants to hear about what he is or isn't comfortable with.

I don't look at it like that at all. If Donte Stallworth got a second chance, and he killed a human being, Vick should get a second shot no questions asked.

I wonder how comfortable the last team that let him start was going into a season without their franchise QB because he let them down in an unimaginable way?

And the list goes on and on, to include Rottenburger. Yes he is getting a second chance at something alot of people have not had a first chance at. But that does not mean he should settle and not want more in the league. All I see him saying to Phillie is do not crown the starter without looking at both of them in a fair competition in this offseason. I would not want any part of a player that do not want to compete.

Kolb signed a one year extension so Vick won't get the chance to be a starter in Philly.

He should ask for a trade.

I'm sure they only signed him so they could trade him.

Someone needs a QB. I really don't follow other teams enough to know who.

Don't rule out AZ... Matt Leinhart isn't the answer.

He simply isnt good enough to start. While i appreciate his competitive spirit he is kidding himself at this point in his career. He was never a prototypical pocket passer.

And as we should all realize now playing in the NFL is not a right.

We all have our opinions of him as a human. Some will point to other bad people as a way of diminishing what Vick did.

So to keep it on the topic of ability to run a football team. Vick stunk up the field most of the time last year for the eagles. He doesnt deserve to start.

He's disgruntled and not a backup but then he says he is a role player.

Boy, that sounds a lot of RW, who veers close to very disgruntled and then says but he is a role player.

Nobody should have to say he is a role player. It should be a given. When someone has to say he is a role player and accepts his job, likely he is not and will not.

By the way, Mr. Dog Killer, just be glad you have a job that pays well. You could easily be in a backyard fighting dogs and then having the $6 buffett at the nearest Golden Corral, you ignoramus.

I figured the Raiders would pull the trigger but they went for someone who's not a convicted felon.

I know Leinart has been on the bench for a while but I haven't seen him play. I don't see Arizona trading for him. He needs to go to a team with a bunch of thug fans. That leaves Philly and Oakland, so I guess he's out of luck.

Maybe he should go back to dogfighting and then back to jail. Maybe he'd be more happy there.

How sad is it that I can tell by the style of writing without looking at the headline that this is Florio's work?

No one said that he, or others like that, should get a second chance either.

But given that he has been given a second chance, like others who've done worse, he should probably learn to be grateful, keep his mouth shut, and just work hard. If he wants to be a starter again then show it in his work, and on the field, but not with running his stupid trap.

The guy is lucky, and should be awful thankful, that he's even allowed to be in the league again.

Exactly.

No one cares, or should really, what he's comfortable with or wants.
