Mike Vick speaks about Ray Rice situation: 'Everybody deserves a second chance'

Ray Rice has dominated the NFL world this week. His release from the Ravens, and his suspension from the NFL following the leak of a gruesome video clip where he is seen knocking out his girlfriend in a casino elevator have overshadowed all else.

While the Rice firestorm is still fresh, some have wondered if the tainted former Ravens running back will get a second chance. There have been multiple players who have been let back in after serious off-the-field gaffes -- Leonard Little, Lawrence Phillips,Ricky Williams, are a few that come to mind.

Most notably, however, has to be Mike Vick. A similar public furor broke out when Vick ended up spending 18 months in jail on charges stemming from dog fighting. He returned to the league in 2009 with theEagles.

On Wednesday, Vick was asked about Rice, and here is some of what he told Newsday:

"Honestly, I think everybody deserves a second chance. Everybody . . . But there's going to be a grace period and we all just have to sit back and reflect on what's been done. Ray Rice is a great football player, but I think there's some things he has to work on, some issues he has to deal with."

On how his own situation compared to that of Rice:

"This one is tough. I think what I did doesn't compare to what this case is and what came out of this. It's just a situation where men have to understand that we're men. Women are a lot smaller and not as physical as us. We just have to think before we react. It's not man-on-man. It's man-on-woman and that's unfair.

"It's just as bad. I won't compare dogs to humans in this situation. But you're talking about a man putting his hands on a woman, so it's a totally different realm. You're not talking about somebody abusing an animal. You're talking about a man abusing a woman."

Shut up Vick, you not only beat helpless animals but had to take it a step further and kill them.

Mike Vick should probably just keep his mouth shut in this situation. In any situation, really, but especially in this situation.

I may be in the vast minority, but I don't feel that casting out Ray Rice and taking away his livelihood is the best way to help he and his wife.

Obviously people just see the words "Mike Vick" and immediately hit reply so they can publicly tell us all about how much they hate him. At least read what he said first before you go onto your agenda.

I read it.

I don't have an agenda. He's never even somebody I think about till the season rolls round.
If you're a fan of his more power to ya. I'm not.

The only way Vick's comments would have been worth reading was if he ended the statement with "I want to reach out to Ray Rice with a right hook".

I'm not a fan of him at all, but I just get tired of certain players in sports who get demonized no matter what they do or say. The hypocrisy in regards to how football fans react to Vick is just ridiculous. He's right, people deserve second chances. How come whether or not certain people actually receive that in determined by one's personal preferences?

If you didn't have an agenda, you sure didn't post anything actually relevant to Ray Rice's situation, or Vick's comments about it.

After watching that video I felt the same way, but after I calming down I realized life goes on after the "right hook". Ray and his wife need help, not public ridicule and threats of violence. Hopefully they are getting the help they need while the world spends more energy trying to oust Goodell than address the very real epidemic of domestic violence by professional athletes.

Again I don't have an agenda against Vick. I didn't go out & join PETA or anything like that.

I have 2 bull terriers & they are like kids to me (very bad ones) but yea the guy served his time & life goes on for him.

I don't feel anything but anger for him..I would not support any team he was on..& that is just ME.

My main reason for having a little sympathy for Ray Rice is the botched up execution....should have been 4-6 games, but it was 2 games, now indefinite from Goodell's bungling of this.

Instead of an initial but firm suspension, Rice's career might be over.

I don't know if any of you have worked in a place where "justice" is like a yo-yo (previous examples of Spygate vs Bountygate), but it's bad for morale and image.

On Michael Vick....

....I have worked in various animal rescues, and have some four-leggeds at my house that are demanding I get up from this computer and FEED THEM NOW. :D I found what Vick did absolutely despicable. I was also brought up to forgive (and far from perfect doing this.) So I forgive him. I can understand many pet lovers won't. While I believe Vick AFAIK has sincerely, turned from his past and even has a dog now, his past can limit his credibility on speaking out.

As in a previous post, Goodell's bungling of Ray Rice's case is the thing that brings some sympathy to him.

Vick should have just said that everyone deserves a 2nd chance and left it at that.

Doesn't he get millions of guaranteed money. I think they will be ok. If not they can each go out and get real jobs with their college degrees like everyone else.

He was privileged, he blew it.

To be honest, I didn't have an issue with what he said. Get past the headline and readwhat he said and he didn't say anything wrong, IMO.

Actually agree with this 100%.

I saw the headline and thought "this should be good".

In reality it looks like he was simply asked a few questions about the situation and he gave his honest answer. I don't think he said anything particularly ridiculous or out of line. He doesn't seem to be the most well spoken individual but he got his thoughts across and I don't have any issues with anything he said.
