Mike White vs. Cooper Rush: Who lands QB2 for Cowboys in 2018?

It appeared the Cowboys were all-in on Rush, opting to also not bring in any veteran arms, a trigger they usually waste no time pulling. Alas, they decided to select Mike White out of Western Kentucky with their fifth-round pick this past April, setting up for quite the QB battle behind Prescott heading into training camp and preseason.

He certainly is very talented throwing the football but maybe more than anything else, he's just handling himself the right way. He's got a good command of the huddle, good command of the line of scrimmage and he's a good decision-maker so far.

I would think the spot would be Cooper's to lose. I'd base that off of preseason play this year. Cooper killed it in the preseason last year. Only way I could see that changing is if Cooper sucks and White does well. But if they're both bad we might would sign a vet. I'd be surprised to see Cooper Rush regress though I'm expecting him to be a solid backup at worst.

2019 could be a true open competition with all 3 QBs on the roster having a legit chance to earn the long term starting QB role. I would rank Rush 3rd on that list, though. White has the star potential. Prescott is, we know what we have in him and he's limited but he has the experience... he's basically the league's other Tyrod Taylor. Rush doesn't have the pedigree, name notoriety or NFL experience so you have to say his chance to be the Cowboys' long term starting QB is a longshot for now.

They both have better Arms than Dak... now which one will prevail to replace Dak is anyone's guess .....White seems to have a better package with his rifle arm and Height....

To be honest, I don't see the competition. Cooper Rush is our backup QB and Mike White is a developmental project. Question: how many regular season games you willing to trust Mike White?

Truth is Mike White might have star potential and he might not ever see a meaningful NFL snap, who knows. Cooper Rush has dominated NFL (not saying starting) defenses in ONE preseason. Nothing more, nothing less. But it does make me wonder how good he looks against the starters.

Don't think QB2 really matters cause of Dak's durability. White will do fine just like Dak n Rush did in prior preseason. Dak needs to be Dak an run more cause that's a talent he's not using enough.

DAL is keep all 3 on the 53, so yeah.

I really like having a developmental QB as the #2.

Journeymen QBs often have no upside, are expensive and often fail anyway.

With a developmental guy that's good enough to be #2, there is potential upside and low cost.

Philly was saved by a veteran backup but he was not the typical journeyman QB.

White has a lot more physical ability than Rush. The odd issue is that the offense will need to change when he is in the game assuming that Dak runs the ball and rolls out more this year as has often been speculated.

Now that I think about it White has some similarities to Foles who was the backup to a much more athletic starter.

QB2 has gotta be able to move the ball a bit.

Hopefully White shows enough to warrant keeping him on the 53. That should always be the goal, to have 2 backups that warrant keeping, especially with how much you can get in trade value.
