Miles Austin not at Valley Ranch this week

So let's do a little Twitter detective work. MIles Austin has a Twitter account, but he doesn't use it all that much and he never answers any fans back so I don't really catch all of his stuff on there.

But today I noticed he sent out a pic of him out in L.A. with the title 'Maxin'.

It's Thursday. Usually the Cowboys are going to get in four workouts this week and this was the first week of voluntary workouts being open for the players.

We all know I made an issue out of Ken Hamlin not being around on Monday. My feeling is that a guy who is on the bubble should be doing all he can to show the team he's looking to get keep his spot while showing some leadership skills as well.

So of course I am going to do the same with Miles Austin.

First the Twitter evidence...

Simple deduction tells you the kid isn't flying back and forth from Valley Ranch to L.A. all week.

Contract. Money. Agent. That's what this is all about. And I think Miles is making a big mistake.

He's got one great year under his belt. Don't start acting like you are the greatest WR in the world just yet Miles. This is worse than Hamlin not showing up for the first day to be with your teammates. This is a kid not showing up at all.

And I know they are voluntary. But we all know this game by now.

Miles Austin is going to be catching people off guard with this stuff and I guarantee you he will have a few fans taking a step back on him with stuff like this.

Full disclosure. Keith Brooking was the guy who got me thinking this might have been a possibility today. During his appearance on Galloway and Company he talked about understanding some players missing the workouts because of contract issues. That immediately sent me to look for something telling me someone was missing this week and Miles was my first thought.

What say the fans of the Dallas Cowboys?

What say the fans you ask? Well, they'll likely say you're a stalker, but I'm sure you're prepared for that.

:lmao2:

I look forward to the day I can either go blind or understand twitter speak. I did not understand one word of those messages. Not one word.

My money is on going blind first.

LOL.

Just call me.

What do voluntary mean?

But srsly, the team has a ton of restricted free agents. It would be too much to expect them to attend and they're not under contract.

Let me repeat whnt I have consistently told many a worrier in the off-season... Miles will be resigned. No worries... This is just gravy. Don't read into it and save yourself a few gray hairs in the process.

Agreed.....

not to take a side here or spark a debate.

but

in 1992.

Jay novacek, Michael irvin and Mark stepnoski didnt have contracts and stayed away. They missed training camp and the preseason game in tokyo because of contract issues.

Irvin wanted an unheard of 3 million dollars and jerry said hell no. Irvin threatened to retire from football near the end of camp and take the vacant fox 4 sports anchor job...lol.....jerry famously told him the "el Paso" line about his demands and jimmy finally stepped in because he was mad that the two guys were now affecting his football team.

Stepnoski was home doing whatever and so was Novacek, he was in wyoming. Troy Aikman spent the spring and summer faxing novacek the new plays everynight that were being installed during camp!!!

If austin is out of town for a few days or not there for some of the workouts I cant imagine that the guys dont understand that he is just working through a contract.

Now having said that, on this current team lots of players have come in and worked hard in a similar situation.

I think when it comes to austin all is going to end well. So I am not worried one iota.

I thought they couldn't attend if they hadn't signed their RA Tender?

Good job. You effectively blew off the fact that I had raised the issue of Miles Austin being at the SAME PLAYBOY MANSION PARTY as Ken Hamlin yet you let this one gloss over as "well, I just disagree" but the other guy gets blasted?

I mean, I get it - you're a blogger, a media guy, but this is ridiculous. You should be blasting Miles Austin even MORE than Ken Hamlin, by all CowboysZone.com logic, since he hasn't showed up for a workout at all.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled typical media double-standard BS.

I would say a player with no contract shouldn't be at voluntary workouts. Of course he could sign his tender (I'm sure he will) but until then he is not under a contract...

A 2nd thought is that the Team (COWBOYS) has told him not to report yet. Because of no contract or because they are shopping him around (players who are shopped are told to stay away because an injury lowers their value). Now I doubt this is the case but this is what happens in some situations.

Austin isn't coming off a disappointing season. One's production is a necessary stipulation in such matters.

Austin also is a RFA. Hamlin's contract is guaranteed.

He is under contract - he's not released yet, so he's still under contract. He should be working out with his teammates and if NFL rules state he can't be on site, he could at the very least be back in Dallas working out independently, or at the gym in New Jersey where he's been training in the off-season from time to time.

Personally? I don't care if any of them show up to any workouts as long as they're ready to work come training camp. If it were ME, however, I'd be there with my teammates because that's the kind of guy I am.

So you get a pass just because you had a good year?

Sorry - if there's a standard I'd expect everyone to be held to it.

If the RFA status prevents a player from showing up because of NFL rules, that's a different story completely, but I still stand by the fact that if NFL rules say you can't be at Valley Ranch, you could at the very least be in Dallas working out privately with a couple teammates or solo, as long as you're doing the same thing.

Even if you're a RFA that gets dealt, you are still hurting either team that you end up playing for the next season by sitting out.

In a im-perfect world, yes.

There is just no reasonable excuse for Hamlin not showing up at voluntary workouts. And no, not being able to catch a flight from clubbing all weekend is not a good excuse. He should show that he's taking things seriously given his precarious position on the team.

He can't point to Austin and say, "Oh hai look, Austin didn't show up either!". Well, Ken, Austin didn't suck last year either.
