A few years ago, Miles Austin was beginning to receive recognition as one of the best receivers in the league and his name was being thrown around in comparison with the likes of Andre Johnson and Vincent Jackson, posting back to back 1,000+ yard seasons.

But after being severely limited and hampered with injuries last season, he seems to have fallen from grace in the eyes of some. So my question is:

Is Miles Austin still viewed as a player with potential to be the one of the best in the league, or is he just another guy that just happened to put up top numbers but isn't as good as most think he is?

I think he is probably rated by most about right. He is a great athlete and a great route runner with below average hands and is injury prone. He is probably in the top 25 wrs in the league, but his numbers get inflated because of Romo.

If he comes out this year and has the dropsies then "officially overrated"

I think his biggest problem is concentration - not bad hands

Not worth his contract, IMO. He isn't dependable and has only had half of a great season. I like him OK, just think Jerry pulled the trigger too fast.

Underrated by Dallas fans.

He's going to have a huge year this year

If we use him right, he will be one of the best.

Problem is they seem to be trying to use him as a deep threat instead of a YAC guy. Just throw a quick pass to him and let his legs do the work... assuming those legs have no hamstring issues.

Neither. He's largely seen as a good to very good receiver which is what he is.

Agreed.

IF he stays healthy, he's a legit #1 WR and top 10 in my book.

Talent-wise absolutely. But he just drops too many balls for me to put him top 10.

And I don't think it's hands, it's a matter of focus. He's made some PHENOMENAL catches in his tenure here.

Overrated on his ability to catch the ball consistently...

Underrated in the open field once he has the ball... he's among the best in the game at that...

He's the same guy that broke out and had a great 09 season. So yeah, neither.

You may be right. The thing with Austin is, even when he isn't wide open, he's still open. He does such a great job of running precise routes and adjusting to the ball. Tony trusts him and that's only going to help us this year.

I think Miles is a great WR. We have just forgotten what he did in a 16-game stretch with Romo at QB starting around game 5 of 2009 season and extending to game 5 of the next season. I think he put up close to 1700 yards in that stretch of 16 games. Then we had Kitna at QB who couldn't get the balls out to the WRs with his 40 year old arm. Then we had Romo back but Miles played with bad hamstrings all year.

I do hope a year of work with Woicik, a year with Romo at QB and a year with decent OL play will thrust Miles back into the top 5 WR he seemed to be during the stretch of games I mentioned. The ability is still there if you go back to week 1 and 2 of the 2011 season before his hammy gave out. Go back and look at the game before his second hammy popped - he was dominating against Seattle.

I just think it has been so long since we saw this duo connecting that we have forgot about their ability to take over a game.

overated. austin has had one great year in 09. since then he has had great games and injuries. if he has another injury season this year we will need to draft another receiver or go in free agency and find one. i hate to bring up last years first giants game has me questioning if austin has what it takes to be an elite receiver. elite receivers come up with that throw at the end of games that he should have had. that would have put away that game.

Over Paid.. But not his fault.. Jerry was giving handing out contracts like candy..

Yeah, 69 receptions for almost 1,100 yards and 7 TD's in 2010 with Jon Kitna at the helm is a horrible year.

He suffers from the same drops T.O. did. He'll make the crazy catches and then follow that up by missing a gimme.

those are great numbers but some of the numbers are empty numbers to me. what i mean is he puts up great numbers early in the game then disapears for stretches and when you need your number one guy to make the game changing catch at the end of games he falls short.
