That indicates that he is staying because it increases the amount of guaranteed money.

Yea this put a hault to those rumors of him leaving. I never thought he'd be gone. There's just too much potential there with Bryant and Miles.

That is not good. It appears to indicate that Cook is getting some guaranteed money.

it doesnt make sense. Maybe his contract was for more than the minimum, and he has now agreed to play for the minimum instead of being cut?

Right? The Dallas Cowboys have restructured Ryan Cook and extended his roster bonus of 500 bucks into 2014/15.

So I guess we pushed that box of Funyuns and Vienna sausages into Cook's final year.

Jerry, I think I saw some sticky nickels in the seat cushions by the receptionist, too.

I think we're 2-3 mil under the cap now.

That is excluding doing anything with Free and Romo, but assumes a 2-3 m cap redcution via Conner one way or the other.

Cook had to either have been extended or taken a paycut. It would have been impossible to restructure (in the way it's being presently used via salary to signing bonus) a contract with only one year left.

I am thinking Spencer will see the franchise tag once again this year.. I would love to get a Melton or Levitre but you can't get into a bidding war with teams. They are definitely creating enough space for the year 2013 to get Spencer under contract for $10mil, especially if they go ahead and release Free-Connor & get a deal done with Romo... I'd much rather use most of the cap space on Spence, instead of bringing in some mid tier FA's.

Being that it's not too much, I like that we've extended Cook. I don't wnat him as one of the starting 5, but he did a pretty decent fill in job. He can play T, G and C. That's a good 6th guy to bring on game day.

I'm a little surprised with the Austin restructure. I figure he'd be around, but thought he'd play out his deal rather than push things into future years.

Moves like Austin's, Bern's and Livings' were unexpected whereas the Carr, Witten and Ware moves were pretty known.

Stephen Jones did say that they could get under the cap without Re-doing Romo's deal. Re-structuring Austin may be one of those moves. It could be that all these other moves are because the negotiations with Romo may actually stretch past March 12th and they need to go to plan B.

My thinking is that the Ravens winning the Super Bowl kinda threw a wrench into the whole issue. The Cowboys and/or Romo's agent wants to see what Flacco gets and the Flacco deal may not get done until March 11th (or even later?)

That means we are chipping away smaller chunks rather than slicing off 8M+ in one fell swoop. It also means that if we make all these moves AND get Romo done in time, we could end up nicely under the cap by 3/12.

(on Spencer comment)
It would probably be easier to come to a deal under the tag also. He would much rather have the security of a new deal.

The problem with Free's contract is that if we flat out cut him we don't save much. We'd need to designate him a June 1 cut so we could spread out the hit over 2 years. Problem there is that if he's a June 1 cut, he still counts against us on March 12th.

It's not too likely, but I wish Free would agree to a flat out pay cut. That would help us the most.

Free's Cap hit this year will be $10.020.000. $960.000 from that are bonuses, $7.000.000 base salary and $2.060.000 prorated signing bonus.

Free is signed throu 2016 but because a SB ist only spread out over 5 years he has no prorated one in his final year. So if we cut him right now we will take 3x $2.060.000 = $6.180.000 against the cap and free up 10.020.000. That leaves us with nearly $4mills of cap savings for 2013.

To me that is good amount of money saved.

If we cut Free after June 1st the left SB can be spread over 2 years. So esentially we take only 1/3 of the hit in 2013 and 2/3 of the hit in 2014. So cutting Free after June 1st we would save around $8mills against the 2013 cap.
Because Free would have had a base salary of $8mills in 2014 and a bonus of $960.000 we would save then around $5mills against the cap instead of the whole $9mills if we had cut him prior June 1st.

The thing i would do is ask Free to take a significant pay cut and let him battle for the starting position. He is due to $8mills in base salary 2013,2014,2015 & 2016. If we could cut that just in half and we could keep the player and safe the same amount of money this year. We can still cut him without the big SB impact next year if he doesn't bounce back.

I think you are right that this work was to make sure we could make the cap by March 12. Negotiations can get hung up in a lot of ways and that is something you should not try and mess with. Pressure to make a deal all too often means a bad deal.

Yeah, this makes sense. I'd guess that this is less about trying to clear room to franchise Spencer, as was suggested in another thread, and more to give the team more time to negotiate with Romo beyond March 12.

Thanks for the clarification. 4 mil ain't bad. If we take the full hit this year. I'd also like to see him agree to the pay cut/ compete idea, just don't know how realistic that is.
