Myles Garrett: Parsons should get every penny he's owed

Once again, one of the many “truths” of the NFL remains - if you’re waiting to sign someone you already know you are going to pay “market value”, you are already losing money and opportunity to do other things with the cap.

But our owner either doesn’t get it or doesn’t care. In the NFL, “waiting is losing”. Period.

Haslem is a buffoon.
I disagree. The owners are trying to hold down salaries. The only chance players have in a free market is to have a rogue owner. I actually like what Haslem is doing in the NBA. The league is pressuring him to trade Giannis and he refuses too. Good for the Bucks you don’t want a Luka situation.

Lamar Jackson's agent is his mother. He's keeping the money in the family. You know that has to piss off these high profile sports agents. I think it's great!!
Before Lamar signed his contract every local talk show was saying he should get an agent. His mother is killing his value. Now they kissing her booty.

Remember back in the day, Big Wes Unseld was his own agent when played for the Bullets, they ask him why, his response (h—, I can count money). Not many do it today they have agents.

I agree as far as holding down salaries. It's gotten crazy. But he's responsible for paying a guy like Watson a fortune. Just stupid. That alone is jackassery personified. Gross ineptitude .

The Cleveland Brown’s owner has messed up the salaries for the top players in the other NFL owners eyes. It started with Dashawn Watson and now it happened again with Garrett. It’s not just a Dallas problem either. Jackson and the Ravens had issues because Lamar wanted a fully guaranteed contract. Now Watt and the Bengals defensive end are at odds with their teams. Without the crazy Garrett extension I believe that Parsons would have signed for 37 million and would be set for training camp. I am worried the owners will start colluding like they did with Lamar Jackson.
There is no need to “collude”. The rules are the same for every team. In addition to a limit of how much a team may pay in player compensation there is also a minimum they must pay. The compensation rules were collectively bargained. It’s, in effect, legal collusion. There is nothing to be gained monetarily by breaking the law. There would be a lot to lose by doing so.

These ownership groups did not get wealthy enough to own an NFL franchise by being stupid.

True. But there's a difference between football accumen and business accumen. Yes it's a business but the NFL is unique. The light shines brightest on the owners that are inept, or football smart. Team building is a art that some owners just can't grasp. Just because pay a guy top dollar doesn't mean you built something good. It's an paying the right player, at the correct position, at the right time. Is Micah a fit, using that formula? We must seriously ask because if we are wrong, it sets the team back even more.

Watson was going to get paid regardless. At the time he was a top 5 quarterback. I remember there was a bunch on the board who wanted to get in the Watson sweepstakes and move on from Dak.

Fans don’t seem to understand how important it is to have a good citizen like Dak representing your franchise. That is a big reason why he is the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. I am not confident that Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and others could withstand the pressure of quarterbacking America’s team.

Believe what you want. Teams colluded against Lamar Jackson.

Many of us knew how huge a risk Watson would be. I was never a fan of the idea. Not under any scenario. He was and continues to be, a big red blinking light. Haslem should have better football people around him to avoid this stuff. Unless he went off the rails and did it despite their reservations. Glad we have Dak still, especially when we look at Watson.

This is true. The “pie” is dynamic in that it changes with the league’s revenue, but at any moment in time it’s the same for every team. Once a team commits to an individual player’s compensation they’re locked into the terms of the agreement.

Teams may build into agreements flexibility allowed in the CBA. Example is what the Bengals are wanting to do with Shemar Stewart. Most teams have used the same language in their first round draft picks contracts for years. He’s balking. Conversely, right now 2nd round picks are not signing trying to get guarantees not generally agreed to in the past for 2nd rounders. (30 of 32 have not signed)

The great trap is that teams hope to acquire a great talent to make the team competitive for a Super Bowl. Signing that great talent means other talent will have to go elsewhere to “get theirs”. The Eagles are a perfect example. Their vaunted defense on a Super Bowl winning team lost 4,000 defensive snaps from last season through free agency, trade, retirement. There is no way (no way!) they repeat this season while they plan on how they’re going to afford to pay Jalen Carter. That’s the way it works. Philly will sign him immediately when they can after this season and not wait until he’s going into his fifth season. That’s the roster building some owners don’t grasp that you’re talking about, I think.

Yes, that's what I'm saying, correct.

I believe everything you've stated. My only fear about him sitting out of contact drills is the higher chances of getting hurt after getting paid late and being physically out of football shape .
We've certainly seen that before. Lots of soft tissue injuries for players who miss practice time.

Some on this board would trade Dak for Shaduer Sanders straight up plus future draft capital.

Shouldn’t he do a team friendly deal? I mean he’s commented on that before I thought.
lol...you think that brat is going to do something like that? He will get his money, and then the trouble will begin. If he follows the lead of "the leader, Unc" he will not do anything friendly for the team.

I hope he gets $75m a year. I dont understand why anyone would begrudge him for it. I've never gone to another job and asked for the minimum or even what is posted.

the scale of pay is meaningless. there were mechanisms for the team to sign and extend him earlier and cheaper - they chose not to do so even though Micah was willing.

so now he can wait until the day before the season and fleece these morons for $1B for all I care

nor should he
