He knew most college systems wouldn't display his talents to talent evaluators at the next level.
"I decided to stay that extra year and I think that was a big part of it, knowing guys can make the transition from here," Mustain said. "You see guys throw for 20,000 yards in their career that can't make the transition."
Leading an NFL-style offense has become such a technical job that quarterbacks who ran spread offenses in college, like the Denver Broncos' Tim Tebow, often need years of study to get up to speed. Mustain has been doing his studying on campus, and the coaches say he finally has a firm enough grasp to run the offense smoothly. Like any other job-seeking college graduate, Mustain wants to be prepared for the next phase of life.
"You've got to be able to get on the board in front of GMs and coaches come January, February and March and explain what you're doing, explain protections, that you understand where the O-line is going, that you can command an offense," Mustain said. "I feel like this is the best place to learn that."

Mustain, once ranked as one of the top high school player in the country

Mustain has talent... no doubt...

BUT... I saw Ryan Mallett play in high school on many occasions...

If he works on his footwork a bit he will be a MAJOR talent in the NFL... he very much reminds me of Marino when he was at Pitt; raw but talented... He is huge, has a rocket for an arm and is very accurate...

6'7" 240... If he gets in the right system in the NFL, look out...

He is very much like Uncle Rico as he CAN throw that football over them mountains... don't bet him...

Trick, did you happen to be at his last HS game? Against Copperas Cove. We played them in Texas Stadium (literally the best day of my 20 year life so far) in 2008, while they were ranked number 1 in the state and we were about 10.

We beat them in the final seconds after a crazy crazy game. He was such a beast it was amazing. But thankfully Robert Griffin was better.

It's still awesome to me having played with or against so many guys who are doing such amazing things now. (Dez, Mallet, Donald Buckram, Robert Griffin, Jacquizz Rodgers)

High school career

By the time he left Southwest Junior High School, Mustain was already the object of high expectations; however he did not start for the Springdale High School varsity team until late in his sophomore season.[1]

In 2004 as a junior, Mustain was 139-of-222 for 2,169 yards and 20 touchdowns as Springdale posted a 12-1 record and reached the Arkansas Class 5A semifinals. He threw only five interceptions in 222 attempts and rushed for 350 yards and 14 touchdowns.

In 2005 as a senior, Mustain threw for 3,817 yards (an Arkansas Class 5A single season record) and 47 touchdowns and completed 69.3 percent of his pass attempts. Springdale went undefeated with a record of 14-0 and won the Arkansas Class 5A state title, including three wins over nationally-ranked opponents and a No. 2 ranking in one national poll.

On January 7, 2006, Mustain was the starting quarterback for the West team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, where he was awarded the Hall Trophy as National High School Player of the Year.

PARADE named him High School Player of the Year in its January 1, 2006 issue. He was then named Mr. Football in Arkansas by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He was also named the 2005-06 Gatorade National Player of the Year and the 2005 USA Today National Player of the Year, the first-ever from the state of Arkansas. Scout.com ranked him as the top high school recruit for the class of 2006.[2] Mustain had told reporters he planned to play for either Notre Dame, Tennessee, Alabama or his home-state Arkansas Razorbacks.

Mustain was the top quarterback in the nation coming out of high school in 2006.[3] In recognition of his accomplishments, Springdale Mayor Jerre Van Hoose declared December 6, 2005 "Mitch Mustain Day" in the city.[4]
In December 2005, Gus Malzahn, Mustain's coach at Springdale, was hired to be the new offensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas; this was widely taken to signal the Razorbacks willingness to shift their offense to adapt to Mustain's style of play.[5] The hiring enabled the Razorbacks to recruit the highly-touted quarterback.[6] On January 16, 2006, Mustain informed Malzahn of his decision to commit to Arkansas, but only after Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis opted to offer quarterback recruit Jimmy Clausen over Mustain.[

so could Demarcus Russell

a big IF

Mallett has tons of potential to be an effective pocket passer, but he has absolutely no mobility.

A Drew Bledsoe

Backup Mitch Mustain has NFL hopes

Matt Cassel never started a game at USC, stuck behind Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, but the New England Patriots picked him in the seventh round of the 2005 draft anyway. Cassel rode the bench three more seasons in New England, then jumped when an opportunity finally arrived. He took over after Tom Brady's knee injury in 2008, had a great season and parlayed that into a six-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs worth more than $10 million a year.
Can it happen twice, a quarterback graduating from the USC practice field straight to Sundays? It might be a long shot, but don't write it off. NFLDraftScout.com has Mustain rated the No. 11 quarterback in next spring's draft and estimates he'll be taken -- you guessed it -- in the seventh round
