MM and Dak contract?

Zack Martin may well be the best player on the offense, but the fact is OG's don't get paid what RB's and WR's do - or QB's. In any case, while I think it's probably fair to say Martin is better at his position, and maybe Smith as well, I think it's very debatable that 5-6 more players are better than Dak. Reasonable people could see it that way, but reasonable people could also put Dak at or near the top of that next 5-6 players. When it comes down to it, that's just a matter of personal opinion, and, of course, McCarthy and Jerry's opinion is what counts.
Erod makes a valid point even if he’s over exaggerated a bit.

I think we could present a strong argument Dak would be at least the 5th most talented guy on offense behind Elliott, Cooper, Martin and Smith.

If we looked around the league with other top paid QB’s could we present the same argument ?

Lael Collins puts him at 6th, if one thinks he deserves to be that high...

Interesting angle to look at with more scrutiny.

Eagles have Ertz, Kelce, Brooks and Lane Jonson that have all been Pro Bowlers at least the past 3 straight years, some of whom have also been All Pro, and though Brandon Peters is probably no longer at his best, he’s a strong HOF candidate with a boatload of Pro Bowl and All Pro honors.

In any case, is the point that the Cowboys shouldn’t pay what it takes to have a quality QB because they have other good players? Seems accumulating the other good players would be a waste if that’s the case. Or is it that Daks pay should be in line with that of the other good players on the team? Obviously we know that’s not realistic because QB pay is simply higher than pay at other positions.

in the end, if we want a quality QB his pay will have to be relative to the current market For QBs with similar credentials, not relative to that of teammates at other positions on his own team.

100%, if McCarthy thought he was a top-tier QB and insisted that he needed him, he would have been signed months ago. Fact is, McCarthy knows that he's an average player that will take assets away from good players and he's not worth it.

And Lamb could put him at 7 but I wanted to keep the discussion more reasonable or less arguable. Difficult to argue Dak is more talented than the other 4.

Lamb will catch a 6 yard slant and take it to the house and somewhere Booger McFarland will be saying, " That was all Dak Prescott"

I think the argument was the fact Dak was the 5-7 th most talented person on offense is why the Cowboys are reluctant or at least hesitant in what they’d describe as over paying. But Erod didn’t expand.

That was just my take. My response was actually to suggest he was probably a little higher up the pecking order .

if Big Mc wasn't sold on Dak...I don't think he comes here.

I think if he was 100% sold a deal would be done. I'm sure there are a lot of things about Dak he likes...but I'm also sure when the Jones boys asked his opinion, his description wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. The Cowboys have a very solid 2nd option at QB for the first time in a while since MM's arrival...I don't think that is a coincidence either.

You are right about that being the argument, but my point is that even if that were true (which is debatable), how does having other talented players remove the need for a quality QB to run the offense, or change the fact that it takes paying market prices to have and keep a quality QB?

I think ultimately Erod just isn’t a fan of Dak and this is the current argument he is using. If he isn’t a fan of Dak, that’s okay. We can all have our opinions. But I don’t see this as an argument. It still just comes down to believing in Dak or not.

So, this means Jimmy Johnson wasn’t sold on Emmitt Smith in 1993?

Eagles love their QB..so he got a deal
Rams love their QB....so he got a deal
Chiefs obviously love their QB...and he got a deal
Tampa Bay loves a 43 year old QB so they gave him a 30m deal but only for 2 years
Tennesee loves their QB...he got a Deal
San Fran loves their QB...he got a deal

Why hasn't Dak gotten a deal? Because the Cowboys (and maybe MM too) aren't in love with their QB...they just like him

I am not talking about whether you like those QB's above or how you think they compare to Dak, i am talking about Teams/Owners/GM's who think they have an Elite/ franchise QB on their team. They always get that QB signed. Looks like Dak is playing on the tag this season so anything short of a SB or and NFC championship game and Dak will only get offerred a 2nd tag next season. Meaning either this season or next will be his last with the Cowboys unless he takes the team to the promised land or gets damn close

I’m not sure it’s really fair to compare the running back and quarterback positions in this matter.

i dont disagree about having a veteran back-up QB...thats very smart and so is Big Mc.

but i don't think because Dak isn't signed it means Big Mc isn't sold on him.
with all the public statements JJ has made about Dak being THE guy....i don't think Big Mc comes here if he didn't feel the same.

If the argument is that the team will sign a player as long as the coach believes in him, then it is fair. Plus, Emmitt wasn’t an ordinary RB. He had just led the NFL in rushing for the 2nd year and had 18 TDs. He was a massive part of what Jimmy was doing with that offense.

So, terms of the deal don’t factor in? Most stories say Dak is the holdout (because of the 5th year), not the team.
