He nailed it.....and makes a ton of sense. Think someone said we have thirty-five 2020 free agents? This draft kinda gives up a year to get least 7-8 of these rookies ready to soften the blow of losing probably most of the 35 free agents. McClay mentions the business part of the draft a couple of times during his interview. Pretty sure this is what he was talking about......

6. It’s a good sign that the Cowboys were drafting their needs a year out. Next year, Dallas RT La’el Collins will be up, and C Travis Frederick faces an uncertain future, so they got C/G Connor McGovern in the third round. And in 2020, DT Maliek Collins will be a free agent, so Dallas targeted, and landed UCF’s Trysten Hill to be his heir apparent. And they drafted a pair of defensive ends to give them flexibility down the line with Robert Quinn, Taco Charlton and Randy Gregory. The idea, of course, is to put yourself in a position to develop a guy for a year before you really need him, then collect a comp pick on the back end. It’s hard to actually pull this off, because you need to have a roster without too many pressing needs to do it, which is where the Cowboys are.

all teams do it. the eagles did it with Dillard so in 2020 he replaces Peters. The Rams did it with Bobby Evans to replace Whitworth in 2020...I"m sure there are others.

I see this as definitely the plan, but the challenge becomes how do you keep this many guys on just a 53-man roster?

Most of the 35 FA's can easily be replaced. Also by the time they cut down the roster to 53. There may only be 15 to 20 FA's. Which is no more than usual.
Not really a concern. And if a player is worth keeping, they will find a way to sign them. As they had 18 going into this year, resigned 9, lost 3 to other teams, and 5 are still out there, not signed by any team. And Irving the 18th retired, but wasn't coming back anyway.

Aren't all those contracts running out aligned with a new CBA?

I forgot about Jalen Jelks too.

DE is going to be interesting going forward.

I hope McGovern kicks *** next year or I’ll be questioning the wisdom of taking him over a S.

Most or a lot of the 35 are on the low end of the priority list but if they're smart they already this their time. As for replacements, I guessing all eight draft picks have a good shot as at making the team or at a min PS and add the undrafted free agents, we see as many 10-11 new rookies this year. Shoot for goal with 2020 draft and we could possibly have as many 20+ plus new players playing on 2020 team.

As stated before, expect to start hearing the two words of CORE PLAYERS a lot from FO.

Also, it's interesting they double-dipped DE even after signing DLaw to his mega-deal. Coincidence, I'm betting it's at all. Remember the general thinking is it takes players from that position 3 years to impact and how many hard years DLaw have on his deal, three. Other words, they're already planting seeds to find his replacement 3 years from now.

All teams without crying needs do it (or should). The Eagles and Rams are probably in much the same position as the Cowboys. Pats too, of course.

Just something to keep in mind is that the Cowboys didn’t plan to draft a guard, they just saw too good of value to pass up.

The Eagles likely did the same with Dillard, as I know they were probably looking at WR before Dillard fell so far.

Drafting a year out and for business decisions doesn’t lead to winning SBs.

It's great that our FO has an eye to the future
Can't pay all these great players

Now that we have all these great players on our team, it'll soften the blow of losing then next year knowing that we at least went to a couple of SBs and won one with them

Build one team
Win a couple of SBs
Tear it down and start building again

Meanwhile there are NFL teams stuck in mediocrity having not even reached the NFC CG in 20+ years

Boy, how can you not tip your hat to this great great FO

OT was a pretty big need in this draft for them given Peters is likely done after this year and he’s injury prone.

They were likely to take an OT with one of their first three picks in the first two rounds.
