that is so bizarre. One of the reasons I think that the first rd home games should be decided by season record. Not because you won a lousy division.
Nope, otherwise why have divisions at all? Why even have conferences at that point? There has to be some structure to the league.

If they did that, we'd lose all the great debates about the injustice of the playoff system.

Because if two teams in the same division end up having the same record you could use the inter-division W/L as the tie-breaker.

Why in the world would you think it would remove structure?

100%.

The point of the playoffs is to see the best teams play against each other. A first place team in say the NFCW that goes 8-9 or 9-8 has no business getting a postseason bye over a second place team in a tougher division that goes 12-5. It's criminal to be honest and something the league should change.
