Where in previous years, I have posted mocks almost on a daily basis; this year I decided to watch film on every player I could find before making a mock draft pick by pick decision. Like many of you, I find watching film and predicting Dallas's best selections to be a lot of fun. Be forewarned that I've included many small school players in my draft. Some in very peculiar spots. I did not take for granted the pundits rankings, but there were some which I strongly disagreed with their rankings. i.e.- predicting CB's Pierre Desir as a 2nd rounder while B.J. Lowery a UDFA. Any how, Hope you enjoy.
Round 1 (16) - Aaron Donald, DT, Pitt - This has been a popular selection and for good reason. He is exactly who we need. Behind Clowney and Mack, this young man can disrupt the O and change the game like no others. Lets hope his size can deter other teams from picking him until were up. Barr is another selection, but after watching tape, he reminds me of Dion Jordan, who was rumored to be on the trading block for a 2nd rounder. If we didn't do that, why would we use a first on Barr. Barr also received a lot of help from his underrated DE, Cassius Marsh at UCLA. Lets get the plug and play Donald, make him rotation at camp, and watch his tenacity infect the other D-Lineman by Game 1.
Round 2 (47) - Gabe Jackson, OG, Miss State - Not my favorite selection, but it is apparent that we need depth on the O-line. Filo from UCLA is gone by the end of the 1st, Martin from ND as well. There is a huge drop off after Jackson, so we take him and breath a sigh of relief that were not in the Oline fiasco we were in 2 years ago. Not a bad player; plug and play after he gets a little faster in the feet. Would be better in the 3rd, but need does, and should get in the way at times.
Round 3 (78) - Will Clarke, DE, WVU - I really like this guy. Especially in the area in which people have mocked him. 4th round grade in mock drafts, but I could easily see him gone in the early 3rd. In this scenario, he gets picked up here. Big and athletic; think Clifton Geathers from a few years ago, but if properly coached, can become a J.J. Watt. Marinelli him up and watch him be a force on the line. Could go WR/RB in this pick, but i see a better investment in those players later.
Round 4 (119) - Preston Brown, ILB, Louisville - While watching Calvin Pryor film, this guy kept jumping off the screen. He is a patient, committed player; doesn't take false steps, not afraid to put in the hit; adequate in coverage; does NOT slow down in blitzing- like a rocket! Steal in the 4th.
Round 5 (158) - B.J. Lowery, CB, Iowa - Ranked as the 61st CB by CBSsports, by NFL draft scout as well. Nope!! If B.W. Webb garnered a 4th round pick last year, this guy would have been a 3rd. His specialty is holding down the quick slants and the short routes in the middle. If we want the fast, quick Defensive line to get to the QB, the slot corner becomes so much more important, and this kid is a mirror for 3 seconds. The double moves can get him, but look what he did to the Abbrederis kid from Wisconsin. Underrated!
Round 7 (229) Jeremy Butler WR, Tenn-Butler - You want underrated, here you go. Even if it is a small school, this kid dominated. He is a tough, in the middle WR; always makes the first man miss; fluid, unhesitant runner; fluid catcher; makes some ballsy plays. Reminds me of Anquan Boldin, Alot!! Attitude to the offense. Unranked by CBSsports in a 1000 player ranking. This young man will remember that.
Round 7 (231) Elhadji Ndiaye, DE, Nebraska-Kearney - Ranked 46th by CBSsports. Agreed, but give him one year learning in the NFL, and he can become the X factor for our Defense. Regardless of his rank, I would use him as a situational pass rusher on day one. His 40 time may be exaggerated (read somewhere it was 4.37), but he is still obviously quick for his size 6-4, 243. Even more surprising is that hes been playing for 1 year. His Uncle, a former NFL DE, saw NFL potential when his NBA dream seemed lost. Smaller school competition, but, dang!! I know its a highlight film, but we've seen almost every players highlight film (as well as recorded games if we can) and this one clearly pops.
Round 7 (238) Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon - Has been in some trouble, but could be a low-risk, high reward pick if he learns not to be a jerk. I've seen him in many mocks, like him, and if hes here at this time, could be a great value pick.
Round 7 (248) Jeff Mathews, QB, Princeton - Another guy that needs his head out of his butt. Not off the field (exemplary young man), but on. He seems overwhelmed at times and needs to slow down. his passes most of the time always seem low for the receiver. Still, there is something there. natural arm strength, reads defenses well, tough. Low end, camp fodder, High end, Tom Brady. Worth a year on the practice squad.
Round 7 (251) Kevin Pamphile, OT, Purdue - Ranked as the 59th OT on CBSports. Fair. Can get overrun, especially in the pass game,....., but, as a swing tackle, fantastic! very quick for his size. Reminds me of Terron Armstead last year. We have Doug Free another year, so lets take someone low and use him for certain situations; Screens, swing runs; maybe the whole package emerges from the athletic ability he carries now.
Round 7 (254) Tim Cornett, RB, UNLV - not a big fan of this years RB crop, and I think we'd be able to get a decent one in FA (or Chris Johnson), but the final pick in the draft would be ok to take a chance on one. Cornett is the all time leading rusher for UNLV and was awarded many accolades for the year. He's 6', runs a late 4.4, and has the rest of his career knowing that he was one of the final selections in a draft that only one team had interest in him. He's gonna be hungry.
