Romo Opens Up and Answers Criticisms
Football Times by It’s all About Me Reporter
10-08-07
Romo's silence has finally broken. Amid rumors of unprofessionalism and a lack of respect for the sport he plays so well, Romo agreed to sit down with this reporter and answer a few questions.
Mr. Romo, how do you respond to the allegations that you are somehow immature or otherwise disrespectful because you wear your ball cap backwards?
“Wow, you’ve really got right to the point haven’t you? I do not wear my hat backwards as a fashion statement. It’s just personal choice. I like it.”
Romo’s smile is infectious but something in Romo’s eyes, something just beyond the laughter, tells this reporter to dig just a little deeper.
But you do realize that this lack of professionalism is a distraction to your team and even the entire organization, possibly the nation as a whole?
For just a moment, Romo shifts uncomfortably in his chair before flashing his winning smile and responding with….
“Well, like I said, I’ve got personal reasons and I never intended to harm my teammates or the club.”
So, will you do the right thing and turn your hat around so that the team can refocus on trying to win ball games?
“I just can’t do that.”
The smile is gone from Romo’s eyes and is replaced with deep regret.
“I love my teammates. I want to win badly. I owe the organization. I'm an American. But, (Romo seems to search for words) I just can’t”
Surely, there is some reason that you would risk not only the team’s ability to focus but also, and entirely probable, a lucrative contract by refusing to honor even a modicum of respectability?
Romo’s eyes now well with tears and he breaks down…
“I have lived my entire life with the knowledge that I have a problem. See, I was born with (long pause) an ugly neck. I’ve sought answers, but there are none. I’ve tried creams, ointments and even what were supposed to be miracle suppositories. I feel at times there is no hope. All I have found to lessen the effects of my anxiety about my ugly neck is to cover my neck with the brim of my cap. I am only speaking out now so that others who also have ugly necks will feel free to speak up for their rights. When I wear my cap backwards form this day forward, it will be to highlight the problem and not hide from it.
Romo looks as if he is going to say something more but abruptly ends the interview and leaves.
This reporter feels regret that it took a driven and dedicated reporter to get Mr. Romo to speak up. If he had chosen to come forth on his own, it might have saved both him and the Cowboys organization weeks of embarrassment. Thankfully, the public now has answers and can move forward.
Until next week.....
