2006 NFL Mock Draft
DEC 18 2005
1. Houston Texans - Reggie Bush*, RB USC
Even with the presence of Dominick Davis, I doubt the Texans would pass on Bush unless they can work out a deal to swap picks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them trade down to obtain that much-needed left tackle; possibly with the 49ers.
2. San Francisco 49ers – D‘Brickashaw Ferguson, OT Virginia
Kevan Barlow says he is the future at running back, but make no mistake. If the 49ers get a shot at Bush, they’ll take him. If not, Ferguson is a solid pick at No. 2.
3. New York Jets – A.J. Hawk, OLB Ohio State
Offensive tackle is a bigger need, but Hawk is a legitimate top-5 talent and would look good lined up on the weak side next to Jonathan Vilma.
4. New Orleans Saints - Matt Leinart, QB USC
If Vince Young decides to enter the 2006 NFL Draft, I would not be surprised if he were the first QB off the board, but for now, I’m giving the nod to Leinart. Aaron Brooks is a big part of the reason New Orleans has been so inconsistent over the past few years and it’s time to go in another direction.
5. Green Bay Packers – Mario Williams*, DE North Carolina State
A consistent pass rush would do wonders for the development of their young secondary and Mario Williams is the best defensive end in college football.
6. Tennessee Titans – Vince Young*, QB Texas
Steve McNair doesn’t have many years left and Young, should he decide to come out, could use a year or two to improve his game. His upside, however, is unlimited, and he‘s well worth a top-ten pick. I could also see the Titans moving down a few spots to gain an extra pick and maybe a guy like LB Ahmad Brooks.
7. Buffalo Bills – Haloti Ngata*, DT Oregon
The loss of nose tackle Pat Williams has been devastating to the Bills run defense. Ngata, should he enter the draft, would be top ranked defensive tackle, and he has the tremendous size needed to play the stuff the run.
8. Cleveland Browns - DeMeco Ryans, LB Alabama
Linebackers are key to Crennel‘s defense and I expect him to continue concentrating on defense early in the draft.
9. Arizona Cardinals – DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis,
At this point, there’s not a huge need that can be filled without reaching, so they go with the value pick. They invested a high second-round pick in J.J. Arrington last year, but Williams’ has a much higher upside. A trade down is a strong possibility as well.
10. Detroit Lions – Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech
Williams can play corner or safety, and would immediately upgrade the Lions secondary. Offensive tackle is a solid possibility here as well.
11. Baltimore Ravens – Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt
I don’t know if the Ravens are ready to give up on Kyle Boller just yet, but if Cutler or Young are on the board here, they’ll have a tough decision to make.
12. Oakland Raiders – Tamba Hali, DE Penn State
Derrick Burgess has been doing a god job since coming over from Philadelphia, but the Raiders need to generate more consistent pressure on opposing QBs and Hali is a relentless pass rusher.
13. St. Louis Rams - Mathias Kiwanuka, DE Boston College
Leonard Little will be 31 this year and the team could use another pass rusher in the rotation.
14. Philadelphia Eagles – Marcedes Lewis, TE UCLA
With Terrell Owens not likely to be in Philly in ‘06, the Eagles could use another wideout, but they also run a lot of two-tight end sets, so Lewis would be a solid pick here.
15. Miami Dolphins – Eric Winston, Miami (FL)
The Dolphins need a lot of help on the offensive line, and Winston could step in and play immediately. He possesses great size and intelligence, and can play either on the left or right side.
16. Denver Broncos (from Washington) - Santonio Holmes*, WR Ohio State
Ashley Lelie is a solid receiver for the Broncos, but Rod Smith is on the downside of his career. Holmes would add explosive speed to Denver’s receiving corps.
17. Minnesota Vikings – LenDale White*, RB USC
The Vikings need to settle the running back position once and for all. Michael Bennett will probably be gone next year and Onterrio Smith can’t be counted on.
18. Atlanta Falcons - Marcus McNeill, OT Auburn
McNeill is a massive lineman with outstanding athletic ability; possibly the most athletic offensive tackle in the draft.
19. Pittsburgh Steelers - Laurence Maroney*, RB Minnesota
Bettis can’t carry a full load anymore and Duce Staley can’t stay healthy
Maroney is a complete back with a great combination of size, speed, and power. He’s the type of back who can push the pile that the Steelers seem to love and would complement Willie Parker‘s speed and explosiveness.
20. Kansas City Chiefs – Ahmad Brooks*, ILB Virginia
The Chiefs are still in need of playmakers on defense, and Brooks has the ability to play at either inside or outside linebacker.
21. New England Patriots - Chad Greenway, LB Iowa
The Patriots have three starting linebackers over the age of 30, and Greenway would be a steal at this point. His versatility would allow him to play either on the inside or outside in the NFL.
22. Dallas Cowboys – Michael Huff, S/CB Texas
Huff would fit the Cowboys’ defense nicely as a free safety and his cover skills make him a great compliment to Roy Williams at strong safety.
23. San Diego Chargers – Chad Jackson*, WR Florida
The Chargers lack a true No. 1 receiver and Keenan McCardell is 35-years old.
24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Ryan O’Callaghan, OT California
The Bucs should look to solidify the offensive line early in the draft, and they could definitely use an upgrade at left tackle.
25. Chicago Bears – Vernon Davis*, TE Maryland
Whether it’s Grossman or Orton in 2006, the Bears have got to get their starting QB some more weapons. And while Marcedes Lewis is the best receiving tight end in the draft, Davis has the better all-around skills and is a better fit for the Bears running offense.
26. Jacksonville Jaguars – Thomas Howard, LB UTEP
The Jags have a tough defense, but they could use an upgrade at outside linebacker.
27. Carolina Panthers – Orien Harris, DT Miami (FL)
Kris Jenkins hasn’t held up well the past two years and Brentson Buckner is 34-years old.
Harris seems to be climbing a lot of draft boards right now, so he may not be available this late in the first round.
28. New York Giants – Nick Mangold, C Ohio State
Mangold would not only be an upgrade at center, but he could also provide depth at all three interior line positions.
29. Cincinnati Bengals – Claude Wroten, DT LSU
Bryan Robinson is average at best, and the Bengals would benefit from an infusion of young talent at the position.
30.Denver Broncos – Elvis Dumervil, DE Louisville
The Broncos are adequate at defensive end, but Dumervil would add another pass-rushing dimension to the defense, plus Trevor Price has been on the trade block the past two seasons.
31. Seattle Seahawks – Kamerion Wimbly, DE Florida State
I’m not sold on Bryce Fisher as a consistent pass rusher, so don’t be surprised if the Hawks look to upgrade the position.
32. Indianapolis Colts – A.J. Nicholson, LB Florida State
Nicholson is a versatile linebacker who would be a good value this late in the first round.
