1. OAKLAND RAIDERSCALVIN JOHNSON

WR | Georgia Tech | Scouting Report
calvinjohnson.jpg
Most have JaMarcus Russell here and that might ultimately be what happens but it seems like the Raiders are snooping around every veteran quarterback available and looking for an excuse to pass on a signal caller and take Calvin Johnson. A truly a special player and one of the best wideout prospects to come along in the last decade or so, Johnson possesses a rare blend of size, speed and athleticism to go along with terrific hands, ball skills, body control and leaping ability. In fact, if you threw "need" out of the equation 32 of 32 NFL teams would probably tell you that Johnson is the best player in this draft. At this point Oakland still has a major hole at the quarterback position and it's hard to dispute the argument that Johnson does them no good if they don't have anyone to get him the ball but I just have a feeling that he's the guy that Al Davis is targeting. Still, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Russell is the pick either and that choice would make a lot of sense for them. This Johnson / Russell debate could come down to the wire.

2. DETROIT LIONSGAINES ADAMS

DE | Clemson | Scouting Report I don't think the Lions will actually take Gaines Adams at #2 overall but it's well known that they would love to trade down and if they do he is the guy they are targeting. Detroit did bring in Dewayne White as a free agent but they also traded away James Hall and with Cory Redding moving inside to defensive tackle full-time there is a big hole outside. Even though he isn't as stout versus the run as you'd prefer there isn't a better pure pass rusher in this draft than Gaines Adams and he's the favorite to be the first defensive player drafted and reminds Rod Marinelli of a guy he had in Tampa by the name of Simeon Rice. Another option here would be Joe Thomas but they have addressed the offensive line in free agency to a certain degree and while a quarterback would make sense considering Jon Kitna is a 35-year-old journeyman it appears that they aren't interested in Brady Quinn. Priority #1 for Matt Millen is to move down though and if Calvin Johnson is available look for them to switch picks with the Bucs at #4 but if CJ is gone the market may dry up, although flip-flopping spots with Cleveland at #3 might still be a option.

3. CLEVELAND BROWNSJAMARCUS RUSSELL

QB | L.S.U. | Scouting Report Calvin Johnson going #1 would work out well for the Browns as it would enable them to land the guy they probably covet most in JaMarcus Russell. Cleveland is supposedly targeting a signal caller with this pick and word is they definitely prefer Russell over Brady Quinn because of general manager Phil Savage's close ties to him, with he and Russell both hailing from Mobile, Alabama. In fact, Savage has known Russell since he was in his early-teens. If the Raiders take Russell #1 then the Browns would turn their attention to either Brady Quinn or Adrian Peterson with this pick and at this point you get a different answer as to who they would opt for depending on who you talk to. On one hand Jamal Lewis is only signed to a one-year deal, is injury prone and has a lot of mileage on his tires so Peterson would provide an instant impact while Quinn would give them a guy to build around both on as well as off the field. Russell being available would make that a moot point however and this would likely be a slam dunk decision.

4. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERSAMOBI OKOYE

DT | Louisville | Scouting Report The worst-kept secret in the league is how much the Bucs covet Calvin Johnson and if Oakland doesn't take him at #1 he should somehow, some way end up in pewter, probably through a trade with Detroit. However, Johnson could very easily go #1 overall and that would be a worst-case scenario for the Bucs as it may send their draft into a tailspin. Joe Thomas would be a possibility here but they brought in Luke Petitgout and have solidified their offensive line to a degree so I am not sure that would be a sure-thing. Now they might try to trade down a bit before taking him but Jon Gruden kind of fell in love with Amobi Okoye down at the Senior Bowl (like he did with Cadillac Williams back in '05) and the Bucs certainly have a big need at defensive tackle so this does make sense. The NFL Draft has never seen a prospect like Okoye, who played in college as a 16-year-old true freshman and as a result will still only be a 20-year-old rookie next fall despite having four years of Division I experience. A 3-technique a la Warren Sapp, this may be a slight reach but his stock's risen to the point where he is now a probable Top 10 pick.

5. ARIZONA CARDINALSJOE THOMAS

OT | Wisconsin | Scouting Report There are very few sure things when it comes to the NFL Draft but if Joe Thomas is available here you can bet the house that the Cardinals will take him. Left tackle is now without question Arizona's #1 need and while Oakland, Detroit, Cleveland and Tampa could all take Thomas there is at least a chance he could fall into Arizona's lap, and they could always try to trade up for him too. A true left tackle with terrific athleticism, Thomas is a better all-around prospect than D'Brickashaw Ferguson was a year ago. If he is gone, which is very possible, the Cardinals might look at Gaines Adams here since he could be the elite defensive end they need and maybe even play outside linebacker if Ken Whisenhunt incorporates some 3-4 principles into their scheme. If Thomas is gone they could also just opt for the next best tackle and grab Levi Brown or maybe really surprise and select Adrian Peterson but they don't have to worry about any of that here because Thomas is still on the board and it will take them all of two seconds to turn in the card.

6. WASHINGTON CommandersADAM CARRIKER

DE | Nebraska | Scouting Report When all is said and done I really see this pick going to Chicago for Lance Briggs if the Commanders still want to do the deal. Granted the Bears declined the initial offer but they're probably just trying to maximize the value they get back and the Skins may even be willing to sweeten the deal a little bit. If they do stay here they want to get a top defensive lineman and while Gaines Adams would be the preference he might very well be gone which means they'd have to look in another direction. A massive lineman at almost 6-6 and nearly 300 lbs., Carriker is versatile enough to fit in at either end or tackle in a 4-3 or end in a 3-4 scheme and after the performances he has put on at the Senior Bowl and in workouts he could potentially come off the board in the top ten overall. In fact, the Commanders have already shown a lot of interest in him and if they don't take him Miami may a few picks later. Amobi Okoye, Jamaal Anderson and LaRon Landry will draw consideration here but this pick is burning a hole in Dan Snyder's pocket and he wants to deal.

7. MINNESOTA VIKINGSADRIAN PETERSON

RB | Oklahoma | Scouting Report This is a real tough situation for the Vikings in that the value on the board doesn't really match up with their needs. There is no denying that wide receiver is by far their most pressing concern but Brad Childress doesn't really believe in addressing that position in round one and this is probably too early for Ted Ginn, Jr. or Robert Meachem anyway. There has been talk out there that they would take Brady Quinn if he was available and I think that would be an outstanding move but I just don't see that happening because it would essentially require Childress admitting that he was wrong on Tarvaris Jackson, who they gave up a lot to acquire a year ago, and his ego is just way too big to admit that was a mistake. With that being the case they opt for the next best offensive threat in Peterson, a phenomenal talent who will be one of the best running backs in the league if he can stay healthy. Granted Chester Taylor ran for 1,200 yards last year but you almost need two running backs these days and "AD" would be a major upgrade. Gaines Adams is a guy they would love if he were available and you can't rule out LaRon Landry either.

8. ATLANTA FALCONS (f/HOU)LARON LANDRY

S | L.S.U. | Scouting Report It is well known that the Falcons would like to bring in a safety since Lawyer Milloy is getting older and Chris Crocker is more of a backup so the chance to add LaRon Landry might be too good to pass up. Nobody doubted his on-field credentials but after Landry ran an outstanding 4.35 at the Scouting Combine people finally began to recognize him as the top prospect that he is. A true playmaker in every sense of the word, Landry is an all-around safety who can play both the run as well as the pass and he is a legit Top 10 pick. Bobby Petrino also wants to get bigger up front and Levi Brown would most certainly help them accomplish that goal and they could also use a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and as insurance for the injury-prone John Abraham. Then there's always the possibility of a trade up for Calvin Johnson and while they now have plenty of ammo courtesy of the Matt Schaub deal it would be very costly and would likely take a package of their #1, both 2nd rounders and their 3rd rounder to get up to #2 overall and I really don't see that happening. Don't sleep on Petrino's old player Amobi Okoye here either.

9. MIAMI DOLPHINSBRADY QUINN

QB | Notre Dame | Scouting Report This would be a dream come true for the Dolphins and while it's far from a given that Quinn will fall this far there are definitely scenarios in which it could happen, most notably JaMarcus Russell not going #1. However, if the Raiders do take Russell then Quinn could just as easily be the #3 overall pick. If he's here Miami would likely jump all over Quinn because their quarterback situation is a mess right now and who knows if Daunte Culpepper will ever fully recover from that knee injury. Brady Quinn is the total package and has everything you look for in a signal caller both physically (size, arm) as well as in terms of intangibles (smart, hard working, a leader, played in a pro style offense, was coached by a quarterback guru) and he is perhaps the best prospect to come along at the position since Peyton Manning. Ted Ginn, Jr. could be an option here and he'd help to replace Wes Welker as both a receiver and return man, Levi Brown would solve some of their offensive line woes and a defensive lineman like Amobi Okoye or Adam Carriker would provide big upgrades as well but if Quinn is available he would be the selection.

10. HOUSTON TEXANSLEVI BROWN

OT | Penn St. | Scouting Report Ever since they used their first pick in the expansion draft on Tony Boselli this franchise has been searching for a top left tackle but despite their best efforts the position is still a major problem for them. They thought they may have found a solution in Charles Spencer but he suffered a career-threatening injury so his future is cloudy and his best fit might be inside at guard anyway so if given the opportunity Levi Brown might be their guy. Clearly the #2 offensive tackle available after Joe Thomas, Brown has been getting pushed up draft boards because of it and he could even come off the board as early as the Top 5. As a result of the Matt Schaub trade the Texans dropped below Atlanta and Miami, two other teams with their eye on Brown, so he could easily be gone by this point. If Adrian Peterson falls into their laps he'd be hard to pass up considering his talent and local ties, LaRon Landry would be a major upgrade for them at safety and a defensive tackle like Amobi Okoye or Alan Branch would fill a need as well. As a sleeper here don't rule out Joe Staley if Brown isn't available because Houston is said to really like him.

11. SAN FRANCISCO 49'ERSALAN BRANCH

DT | Michigan | Scouting ReportYou have to give Mike Nolan and this franchise a ton of credit because in just a couple of years they've improved the Niners overall talent level by leaps and bounds and really seem to be on the right path. With that said there is still work to be done and Alan Branch might be too talented to pass up at this point. Even though he wasn't as productive at the college level as you would have preferred you just don't find many guys with his blend of size and athleticism so when you get a shot at one you have to take him. Everyone knows the key to any good 3-4 defense is a stud nose tackle and their lack of one is a major reason why Nolan hasn't been able to convert to the scheme he wants to on a full-time basis but by bringing Branch into the fold those issues go away. As an added bonus Branch could even play some end in the 3-4, which he did at times for the Wolverines. Adam Carriker would also be a perfect fit at end in the 3-4 as Bryant Young's eventual successor and Mike Singletary and the Niners staff coached Patrick Willis at the Senior Bowl so he may be a possibility here as well. You can't rule out a top wide receiver either.

12. BUFFALO BILLSPATRICK WILLIS

ILB | Ole Miss | Scouting Report Few teams are in a better position than the Bills in round one because they have three clearly defined needs and there should be value on the board at each position when this pick rolls around. However, when it comes right down to it Patrick Willis is the best value, he addresses a weakness and also brings the type of character and intangibles to the table that Marv Levy looks for. Not only was Willis as productive of a linebacker as you will find at the college level the past couple of years but he also tested through the roof in his workouts, running a 4.38 at his Pro Day. After losing London Fletcher as a free agent and trading away Takeo Spikes this pick makes a ton of sense and would start the rebuilding of their linebacking corps. Losing Nate Clements in free agency was a huge blow so Leon Hall will likely garner strong consideration here as well and Marshawn Lynch will get a long look as Willis McGahee's potential replacement but in the end Willis is just a perfect fit for them and would more than likely be the choice if he's still available.

13. ST. LOUIS RAMSDARRELLE REVIS

CB | Pittsburgh | Scouting Report Once again the Rams defense was abysmal in 2006, especially against the run, so odds are they will be looking for some help on that side of the ball. It's no secret that they'd love to get their hands on Amobi Okoye but that is looking less and less likely by the day and while Alan Branch is a talent he might remind them of Jimmy Kennedy too much to pull the trigger there. Adam Carriker's a possibility as a 4-3 defensive tackle and they are said to like him but instead they shift their focus to the secondary and grab a cornerback for the second year in a row. Darrelle Revis has quietly emerged as one of the top defensive players in this draft and it would not be a shock if he was the first corner chosen, ahead of Leon Hall. A great athlete with ideal size and great speed, Revis is a physical player who can also contribute as a return man and word is the Rams have taken a shine to him. This wouldn't be an ideal situation for them but with Okoye figuring to be long gone Revis would be a nice pick who'll help to solidify their secondary.

14. CAROLINA PANTHERSJON BEASON

OLB | Miami (FL) | Scouting Report This is a tough pick to project and the Panthers could go in a number of directions but linebacker sure looks like a good place to start. First of all their leading tackler from last year (Chris Draft) is now playing elsewhere and when you also take into account that Dan Morgan is probably one concussion away from retirement the Panthers linebacking corps. may have more questions than answers. Jon Beason does not have size that you look for and he didn't work out as well as expected either but, as they say, the eye in the sky don't lie and due to his play on the field the consensus seems to be that he'll still come off the board in the middle of round one and he's quietly become a hot prospect. Perhaps best of all Beason has experience at all three linebacker positions so depending on their situation he could help out inside or outside. New offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson plans to incorporate the tight end into the offense more than they have in recent years so Greg Olsen is a real possibility and with Shaun Williams not in the picture and Mike Minter set to retire after the 2007 season you can't rule out Reggie Nelson.

15. PITTSBURGH STEELERSLAWRENCE TIMMONS

OLB | Florida St. | Scouting Report Some big decisions have to be made in the Steel City in regards to whether they will stick with the 3-4 defense they have come to be known for or make the switch to new head coach Mike Tomlin's specialty, the Cover 2. They'll probably use a little of both but in the end you can expect them to begin a transition to a zone scheme because ultimately the head coach will want to run what he is most comfortable with. Lawrence Timmons is a good fit because he is a great pass rusher who will be able to handle a role in the 3-4 but he's an even better fit for the Cover 2 and that versatility will likely be very appealing to the Steelers. Timmons finally got a chance to start as a junior in '06 and he definitely made the most of the opportunity. He is still extremely raw but all he really lacks is experience and eventually he could end up being even better than Ernie Sims. Jarvis Moss could interest them as well as he'd be the hybrid DE / OLB depending on the scheme and a cornerback like Darrelle Revis or Leon Hall would make a lot of sense as well.

16. GREEN BAY PACKERSMARSHAWN LYNCH

RB | California | Scouting Report A common phenomenon I have noticed in the NFL is teams with lackluster talent somehow finding a way to win a few more games than they probably should, thus taking them out of contention to land the type of elite player in the draft that they still need. Unfortunately for the Cheeseheads I'm afraid that might be the case with Green Bay this year because even though they finished with a .500 record at 8-8 they are still probably among the bottom 5-7 teams in the league when it comes to overall talent. That doesn't mean they can't land an impact player here though and Marshawn Lynch would certainly provide an upgrade for them on offense and help replace Ahman Green. Similar in some ways to Laurence Maroney, Lynch has very good size, is multi-dimensional and he's also a legitimate big play threat. There is some talk of him dropping due to health and character concerns but ultimately he'll probably end up in the middle of round one. Tight end is also a need and Brett Favre would probably appreciate a weapon like Greg Olsen and a wideout like Ted Ginn, Jr. would give their offense a dimension they currently lack.

17. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARSREGGIE NELSON

S | Florida | Scouting Report It looks like this pick will be used to address the defense, with safety and a pass rusher being the two most likely options. After losing Deon Grant in free agency the Jaguars now have a gaping hole in their secondary and it's pretty obvious that the Jaguars have had their eye on Reggie Nelson for a while now. Nelson only has a couple years of Division I experience but he certainly made the most of them and was one of the true impact defensive backs in the college game this past season. A ballhawk and playmaker in the secondary, some feel Nelson can even play some corner in the pros and if available you can probably pencil him in for Jacksonville. If Nelson is gone they would likely turn their attention to Jamal Anderson, Jarvis Moss, or maybe even Adam Carriker, who would give them the top defensive end that they have been searching for to compliment Reggie Hayward. Ultimately they'll be able to find a pass rusher in round two or three but they won't find a safety of Nelson's caliber so that is the direction they opt to go here.

18. CINCINNATI BENGALSLEON HALL

CB | Michigan | Scouting Report One way or another this pick is going to be used to address the defense but what position remains up in the air because they really need help at all three levels. With that said Leon Hall is the best value (it's not often you land arguably the top corner in the draft this low) and certainly addresses a need so he is the pick. Tory James has already been sent packing and Deltha O'Neal may not be far behind so Cincy will need a top cover guy to play opposite last year's 1st rounder Johnathan Joseph and Hall would be a good fit. After answering questions about his speed by running a 4.39 at the Combine Hall now has the workout results to pair with his terrific on-field resume and that should secure him a spot in the Top 15-20 overall. An added bonus is that Hall is really a quality character guy as well so after dealing with so many off-the-field distractions recently he would be a breath of fresh air. A linebacker like Jon Beason would also be a good fit since Odell Thurman, Brian Simmons and possibly Brian Simmons are gone and a top defensive lineman would not hurt either but they have to get a corner and Hall is simply a fantastic value.

19. TENNESSEE TITANSROBERT MEACHEM

WR | Tennessee | Scouting Report In the football world they often say that if you have a lot you more than likely have nothing and that just might be the case at wide receiver for the Titans. Even though Tennessee has a bunch of solid players at the position they lack that true #1 target and with both Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade having left as free agents they now have an even bigger hole at wide receiver. Local product Robert Meachem is coming off just a fantastic junior campaign (71 rec. for 1,298 yds. with 11 TD's) and after blazing a sub-4.4 forty he could very easily come off the board this early. Needless to say this team sure can't go wrong by giving Vince Young an explosive weapon to throw to and Meachem would provide this offense with a big play dimension. Ted Ginn, Jr. would also make a lot of sense and could be the pick if available and he'd be a big help not only as a wideout but as a return man as well and don't rule out Dwayne Jarrett, who Norm Chow knows from his days with the Trojans. With Pacman Jones now suspended for at least the '07 season cornerback is in play here too so keep an eye on Darrelle Revis, Aaron Ross and Chris Houston.

20. NEW YORK GIANTSJOE STALEY

OT | Central Michigan | Scouting Report This team is a perfect example of how quickly ones needs can change because in just one day the G-Men released both of their starting outside linebackers and their starting left tackle, making both positions possible targets with this pick. Right now David Diehl is slated to be their starter on the critical left side, which is obviously not an ideal situation, so that is why they opt to go with Joe Staley here. Staley is a former tight end with terrific feet and athleticism who blew scouts away at his Pro Day by running a low 4.8 at over 300 lbs. In a class that doesn't feature many top offensive tackle prospects, let alone guys who can legitimately play on the left side, Staley should prove to be a very valuable commodity on Draft Day and there is even talk that he could work his way into the Top 10 overall. Jon Beason, Paul Posluszny and Lawrence Timmons will garner strong consideration here as well and cornerback is another area where they might look for an upgrade in which case names like Darrelle Revis, Aaron Ross and Chris Houston could come into play. This just might be their last chance to get a top left tackle though so Staley it is.

21. DENVER BRONCOSJAMAAL ANDERSON

DE | Arkansas | Scouting Report The Broncos have some pretty solid players at defensive end but lack a difference maker so after failing in their attempts to land John Abraham a year ago and Patrick Kerney this offseason a top pass rusher will likely be their main target on Draft Day. Jamaal Anderson doesn't get a lot of national attention but he is a terrific prospect who is coming off a junior season in which he tallied 19.5 tackles for a loss and 13.5 sacks. Anderson could still easily go in the Top 10-15 overall so for them to find him still available here would be a real coup. After trading away George Foster offensive tackle is now a concern so Joe Staley would be an option here but they want to add a top defensive end and Anderson is just too good to pass up at this point. Mike Shanahan does have a tendency to surprise on Draft Day though and there is talk that he is interested in moving way up in round one for a crack at Joe Thomas so that is something to keep an eye on as well.

22. DALLAS COWBOYSJARVIS MOSS

DE | Florida | Scouting Report Perhaps no team did as good of a job of addressing their most glaring needs in free agency as the Cowboys, who took care of their issues along the offensive line (Leonard Davis) and at safety (Ken Hamlin). What that essentially does is free up Dallas to go in a number of directions with this pick and they are a tough team to project right now. However, after bringing in Wade Phillips as the head coach it only makes sense to give him the tools he needs to run a 3-4 defense like he did in San Diego and one thing they lack right now is a pass rushing outside linebacker to play Shaun Phillips to DeMarcus Ware's Shawne Merriman. After battling the injury bug earlier in his career Jarvis Moss quietly emerged as one of the most disruptive pass rushers in the country in 2005 and he was then a key cog in the Gators National Championship run as a junior in 2006 when he made some really good Ohio State blockers look downright silly. Wide receiver could also be a consideration here and they are said to like Dwayne Jarrett, a guy like Joe Staley may be the heir apparent to Flozell Adams and you can't rule out a cornerback either.

23. KANSAS CITY CHIEFSTED GINN, JR.

WR | Ohio St. | Scouting Report For years now the Chiefs have somehow gotten by with mediocre starting wide receivers but it looks like those days may be coming to an end because the duo of Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker were pretty disappointing last year. A big play waiting to happen with elite, world-class speed, Ted Ginn, Jr. is a threat to take it the distance at any time whether it be as a receiver, runner or return man and he would add an entirely new dimension to the Chiefs passing game. There is a chance that Ginn could be long gone by this point and if that is the case Robert Meachem, Dwayne Bowe and Dwayne Jarrett would draw consideration. After being spoiled with outstanding offensive line play for so many years they now need to bring in some help up front, especially at offensive tackle where Willie Roaf isn't coming back and they even lost Jordan Black, so Joe Staley would probably be extremely tempting if he were still available here. One final option would be cornerback and they have shown a lot of interest in a guy like Aaron Ross.

24. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTSPAUL POSLUSZNY

OLB | Penn St. | Scouting Report For years now linebacker has been one of New England's greatest strengths and while they are basically set outside, especially with the signing of Adalius Thomas, there are some question marks inside with Tedy Bruschi now nearing the end of his career and little or no depth behind him and Mike Vrabel. The Pats are said to covet Jon Beason so if available he would likely be their guy but since that's not the case they opt for Paul Posluszny. A poor-man's A.J. Hawk, Posluszny did not have the type of senior campaign that most were expecting but you have to remember that he was coming off a pretty major knee injury and also adjusting to a new position. However, "Puz" was extremely productive, has terrific instincts and his intangibles are off the charts and all of that would sure seem to make him a perfect fit for New England both on as well as off the field. Even though we have been saying that they should take a defensive back early for what seems like years now the Pats have always gone in another direction but the day is coming where safety and corner will need to be addressed so that's a real possibility here too.

25. NEW YORK JETSGREG OLSEN

TE | Miami (FL) | Scouting Report Despite a nice season that produced much better results than anyone could have expected the Jets still have plenty of needs and could go in a number of directions here. One area that they are definitely looking to address early in the draft is tight end, where they would like to bring in a pass catching threat as an upgrade over Chris Baker. Even though Greg Olsen struggled as a junior, in large part due to poor play from the quarterback position, his stock is really on the rise after a sensational workout at the Combine in which he ran a 4.51 forty and he could easily be long gone by this point. In what is a down year for the tight end position Olsen's clearly the cream of the crop and perhaps the one guy available who can stretch the seam vertically so he may be the first and last chance to land a dynamic threat at the position. Cornerback is also a big concern for them and Aaron Ross would be a nice fit while a pass rushing outside linebacker such as Jarvis Moss or Anthony Spencer would certainly satisfy a pressing need for them as well.

26. PHILADELPHIA EAGLESBRANDON MERIWEATHER

S | Miami (FL) | Scouting Report After replacing Donte' Stallworth by signing Kevin Curtis the Eagles are now free to address another position in the first round and based on value and need Brandon Meriweather would appear to be a nice fit. The play of Michael Lewis really declined and the team let him leave as a free agent and even though his replacement Sean Considine was solid they can certainly do better and would prefer to keep him in a rotational role. A talented player who probably would have gone a little higher if not for character concerns, Meriweather is a great all-around safety who can play not only the pass but the run as well and he could even slide over and play a little bit of corner. A playmaker in the deep patrol, Meriweather can be groomed by Brian Dawkins before helping to carry on his legacy. Andy Reid always likes to look to the trenches in round one so you can't rule that out and another intriguing possibility here could be Brian Leonard, who'd provide a big, physical presence to the run game and compliment Brian Westbrook while easing his load.

27. NEW ORLEANS SAINTSCHRIS HOUSTON

CB | Arkansas | Scouting Report This is a defense that played pretty well last year despite a lack of star power but one position that they have made a priority to address this offseason is cornerback, where Fred Thomas and Jason Craft leave something to be desired. The casual fan did not know a whole lot about Chris Houston until his breakout performance at the Scouting Combine but the pros have had their eye on him for a while now after he basically shut down Dwayne Jarrett, Dwayne Bowe and Robert Meachem in 2006. A terrific man cover guy with outstanding speed, the only thing Houston lacks is ideal height (a shade under 5-10) but he plays much bigger. Houston's stock is absolutely soaring right now and by the time Draft Day finally rolls around there is a pretty good chance he could be long gone by this point. Linebacker is also a possibility and Paul Posluszny fits the mold of what they are looking for and they'd have to take a very long look at an impact tight end like Greg Olsen if he fell this far but a corner like Houston or Aaron Ross is probably their target here.

28. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (f/SEA)BRIAN LEONARD

FB | Rutgers | Scouting Report One thing Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick do better than anyone else is find players who fit what the franchise is looking for not only on the field but off it as well. In fact, they aren't afraid to go against the grain, defy convention and maybe even take players a little earlier than expected if they have a conviction and that could be the case with Brian Leonard. A running back / fullback hybrid who swallowed his pride and assumed a complimentary role behind Ray Rice as a senior for the good of his Scarlet Knight team, Leonard would be an ideal compliment to Laurence Maroney and help to replace Corey Dillon. More importantly though Leonard is the type of versatile weapon the Patriots love to utilize and they could easily move him around to create mismatches, even potentially employing him in an H-Back role. Depending on what they do with their first choice in this round linebacker or defensive back are also possibilities here but Leonard sure looks like a classic Patriot pick and a nice fit for them in just about every aspect imaginable.

29. BALTIMORE RAVENSANTHONY SPENCER

DE | Purdue | Scouting Report Top to bottom there may not be a deeper, more talented squad in the league than the Ravens so they could be one of the few teams that can realistically justify going the best player available route. However no team is without flaws and with Adalius Thomas leaving as a free agent there is some concern as to whether Jarret Johnson and Dan Cody will be able to adequately replace him. A fantastic pass rusher who racked up 26.5 tackles for a loss as a senior for the Boilermakers, Anthony Spencer is a little undersized for a pro defensive end but he'd be an ideal fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker. The other area where Baltimore might look to with this pick is the o-line, where Tony Pashos was lost in free agency and Jonathan Ogden is set to retire in the next year or so. They are said to really like Joe Staley although he will almost surely be gone by this point but they have also shown some interest in Ryan Kalil, Tony Ugoh, Arron Sears and Ben Grubbs. This team has always relied on a great defense so it only makes sense to replace Thomas here.

30. SAN DIEGO CHARGERSDwayne Bowe

WR | L.S.U. | Scouting Report There is no denying Vincent Jackson played pretty well down the stretch in his second year but it's important to keep things in perspective and remember that in the end he only started eight games and finished the season with just 27 catches for less than 500 yards. Even if you do accept the premise that Jackson is a current or future #1 target for them there is still the need to add another top wide receiver because Eric Parker is just average and Keenan McCardell was released. Dwayne Bowe flies under the radar to a degree due to all the high-profile underclassmen wideouts that entered the draft but don't be surprised if he goes earlier than a number of them. A big, physical receiver who was one of the standouts at the Senior Bowl this year, Bowe isn't a speed demon but he'd certainly be a great value this late in round one. Safety is also a need since Terrence Kiel was sent packing so Michael Griffin would be a logical possibility here as well but with a talent like this still available at wideout it could be hard to pass him up.

31. CHICAGO BEARSBEN GRUBBS

OG | Auburn | Scouting Report In a surprise move the Bears devoted almost all of their draft picks last year to the defensive side of the ball despite obvious deficiencies on offense. All in all it's hard to argue with the results but don't expect to see them use that same strategy this time around as they will more than likely use the majority of their '07 selections on offense. Most think a playmaker at wideout or tight end will be their focus here and while that is certainly a possibility the Bears don't always do what's expected when it comes to the draft. Reuben Brown was resigned but he does not have much left in the tank so it is time to start bringing in some youngsters along the offensive line and the team is said to really like Ben Grubbs. A former defensive tackle and tight end, Grubbs is a terrific athlete for the position and while it's somewhat rare to see a true offensive guard go in round one this guy has the stuff to buck the trend. With an early 2nd round pick from the Thomas Jones trade the Bears could also move up for a shot at Greg Olsen or a receiver if they wanted.

32. INDIANAPOLIS COLTSJUSTIN HARRELL

DT | Tennessee | Scouting Report It's hard to imagine such a good team having such a terrible run defense but so it goes for the Colts, who finished dead last in the entire league against the run and allowed opponents a mind-numbing average of 173 yards per game on the ground. It looks like Corey Simon's days in Indy might be numbered and with Montae Reagor gone and Darrell Reid in legal trouble their most glaring need probably lies on the interior of the defensive line. Coming into the '07 season Justin Harrell was widely recognized as the top senior defensive tackle in the country but unfortunately he ruptured his biceps tendon and was limited to just three games, although he did put surgery off for a week in order to help his team in a key rivalry game. Harrell's stock has been on the rise of late though and he is firmly entrenched as the #3 guy at the position behind Alan Branch and Amobi Okoye so there is even a chance he could be gone by this point. After losing Cato Junes in free agency linebacker is also a concern that they could address here, although historically they haven't gone that direction in Round 1. Anthony Gonzalez could be a darkhorse.

Not my favorite mock, but I wouldn't hate that draft either. I like Ugoh alot, but I think you can probably drop down a bit into the late second/early third and still pick him up.

interesting draft if it worked like that. However I can see Adrian Peterson dropping even further than that if the Browns don't take him. Right now he seems like a lock to go to the Browns but if he doesn't, He might see himself going to Buffalo.

I'd really like an OLB pass-rusher, but I'm not too high on Moss. His measurables weren't very impressive, and he wasn't overly productive in college. Normally you can overlook production if they have the physical talent, or vice versa, but Moss really doesn't seem to have either.

I, for one, wouldn't be happy with that draft at all. I'll have the ole trusty vomit pail next to my sofa should such a draft take place.

I gotta tell you, there aint no way in hell I take Carriker at 6 over all. I mean, he's a good player and all but there is no way I see him as worthy of that kind of selection, even by Washington.

I don't see Minnesota passing on Brady for AD either. They have Taylor who is a pretty good value for them. Don't see it.

I don't see Carolina picking Beason at 14 Either. I mean, this guy is a 6'0, 235 lbs, 4.7 40 guy. Good lord, what is it that I'm missing here? Yeah, Carolina typically reaches for small, slow LBs in the 1st.

The day Leon Hall falls to 18 is the day we better have our arses in gear moving up to take him. Thats silly to me. He's the one CB in this draft that can be a star in the NFL IMO.

All in all, I can't say that I see the logic here.

If they pass up on Anderson at 6 for Carriker, they're insane. But hey, I'd love to see them do it.

As for Leon Hall, you can have him. He's nothing special. Certainly not worth giving up picks for.

we've drafted olb's the last 2 drafts.it's a little early to write off carpenter to me. i would rather go with bowe there, and i did'nt like the other two picks either. i would have went wilson/sears/wade in the 2nd and beck/ramirez/free in the 3rd.not a very impressive mock to me

part of the reason he wasnt so productive was due to that condition he had...some sort of bone infection or something, I dont recall all the details...but it caused him to lose alot of weight and miss time

I dont recall all the details, but pretty sure it was Moss who had the health probs and it took them a long time to figure out what was wrong

Hall is not going to be a star IMO, in fact he looked pretty overrated to me in most of the games I saw, and he was eaten alive by Jarrett in the Rose Bowl

I like Revis alot mroe than Hall, and I bet Revis ends up going before Hall now

Yeah, dbair, it was a staph infection that Moss had...

I love the first two rounds. You guys have me doubting Moss a bit, but he still looked to me when I saw him like he had true passrush talent. But Spencer would be fine, too -- maybe better.

And Ugoh is a good pick. He needs maybe a year of grooming, but he can get that here. He's a good long term prospect.

Hate drafting a kicker, though. Fortunately, we won't do that.

Oh, and put me in the camp that doubts Hall. Big time.

ridiculous mock at the top, imo.

And despite Jarrett's 40 time, anyone who thinks Leonard, the RB who couldn't hold his starting position at Rutgers and was switched to FB because the sophomore RB was better, is going to be drafted ahead of Jarrett is insane.

Leonard was a FB for his whole career. When Rutgers finally got a top RB recruit that enabled Leonard to block for him instead of carry the load, like he did his whole career.

I'm well aware of the disease he had and that he gained a considerable amount of weight over the past several years. The problem is that he wasn't remarkably productive even after gaining the weight. He has the height and frame to add more weight, but that means he'll only be slower. If he were quick at 250, that might be ok, but he's not even quick at 250.

There's another guy on the board at that point who was (1) more productive in college than Moss, and (2) is quicker, heavier, and stronger than Moss. That's all I'm saying.

oh dont get me wrong, I dont want to draft him...just saying that might be one of the factors as to why the lack of consistent production
