I’ve been doing several mock drafts (really never got into that until recently) and it seems like there is a pretty good chance that the top tier defenders will be gone by the time we pick at #12.

It also seems like the top secondary tier defenders are trending up —with Cowboys preferred type of players (need plus BPA) are going about a round earlier than they were just a few weeks ago.

Cowboys best strategy might be to see how many picks they can acquire between about pick 20 and pick 60. There really seems to be some great players available in that vicinity.

i will just add this here with verdicts post. i know these guys that do the mocks as part of their jobs, not everyone likes. I don't follow college football so i count on others here that do. this one caught my attention only because it involves trading down slightly from 12.

would getting these 2 players plus a 4th and a 7th, be good? bad? ugly?

They just interviewed a few NFL execs about a mock and a few of them had Styled and Downs outside the top 10.

I an pretty confident a good defender will be available.

If not hopefully we take care it business in FA and can just take whatever offensive player that falls.

Two great players and more ammo. Id call it a home run.

There is little chance Styles, after that combine performance, is there at 12.

And if he is, then don't even wait, just run the pick up.

Mock drafts are fun. I have done several myself.

They are typically more fun for Cowboys fans because we typically do nothing in FA that would impact our draft needs.

However it is impossible to predict the draft when legit teams actually fill holes in FA and then their draft needs actually change.

I would be fine with the pick but I think he is getting pumped up and a little overrated just bc the class is so bad.

He is not Roquan or Kuechly as a prospect.

I just ran 2 mocks on Fanspeak that gave me Reese at 12 both times. Now IMO, that's crazy and it just goes to show that those simulators aren't very reliable.

I do the mocks all the time....I enjoy it and helps me learn about a lot of players I know limited about. That way even late in the draft, I'm still throwing empty cans at the TV when my pet cats get drafted by teams other than Dallas

Aaron Donald was drafted at #13
JJ Watt was draft at #11

This is a draft that's deep on the defensive side, and there are only a few good linemen. Several teams will prioritize their o-line in the top 10.

True but this draft is also absolutely terrible at the top so guys like that will not be available.

Teams are going to overdraft for need so we will be fine at 12. I would be shocked if there isnt a top 10 graded player available when we pick just hope it is on defense.

CJ Allen reminds me of Nakobe Dean . Dallas has to get more out of 12 when Styles & Downs are gone . Explore trade downs try to climb back into day 2 get someone else’s lower first rounder . Get your corner at 20.

My concern at this point (which may change after free agency) is that by trading down from 12 we miss out on a player like Thienemen. I do think the first tier of defenders we may want will be gone (Reese, Bailey, Bain, Styles, Downs, Delane). We could trade down and still end up with a CB, LB or DE, but I think we'd miss out on the top group of safeties.

Depending on what we do or don't do in FA, it could drastically effect what positions we are interested in.

This also applies to every team. So a lot of things could change.

Yeah, it's all speculation right now. But if Dallas does its usual, then no position will be ideally filled. They will just have fill-ins.

Exactly and somehow we still won't pick the best player available.

We usually seem to lock in on a player and take him no matter who is available. For instance, we knew ahead of time on LVE, Tyler Smith and Mazi Smith. Those close to the team were telling us we were going to take them before the first round even started. We've done our best work (Lamb and Parsons) when we simply took the best player who dropped to us. I know the year we took Parsons we were going to take one of the top two corners over him, but fell into him when they were taken.

I'm not saying we won't end up with a great player anyway, but it's easier to do when you let the draft come to you instead of forcing it because of your needs.

Can we get lucky this year or has Jerry used up all of his luck already?
