My 1st attempt at a mock draft this year. Not gonna trick it up with trades or pet cats dropping drastically.
RD 1. # 9- Tyron Smith OT USC
If the boys stay at 9, I think they take Smith. Could trade up for Peterson or down for Carimi. But at #9 they find excellent value at the position of greatest need. Supposedly bulked up to over 300 pounds, and is only 20 years old. Huge upside with this pick.
RD 2. #40- Aaron Williams CB Texas
Cornerback is a huge concern, and if they are unable to get Peterson and dont take Prince. Williams could be the guy. Recent reports that the Boys were heavily in attendance at his pro day. Ran 4.5 at the combine, but faster at the pro day. Could possibly see an OL taken here (Ijalana, Cannon) but cornerback is a pressing need. Would love if Danny Watkins fell this far.
RD 3. #71- Titus Young WR Boise St.
Not a huge need, but best player available. He could go earlier than this, but if he's on the board this should be the pick. The Boys have needed a quick slot receiver for a long time. This guy would look great in the slot with Dez and Miles on the outside. Drawn comparisons to Desean Jackson. Other possibilities could be NT Kenrick Ellis or S Quinton Carter
RD 4. #102- Lawrence Guy DE Arizona St.
Spears, Bowen, Hatcher are all free agents. Defensive end is a need position. Guy is 6'4" 305 lbs., perfect size for 3-4 DE. Good value in round 4, and fills a need.
RD 5. #143- John Moffit C/G Wisconsin
Love his versatility and demeanor on the field. Part of a dominate and well coached Wisconsin offensive line. Can play guard, or center. Great depth for the line, could start now if needed.
RD 6. #176- Deunta Williams S North Carolina
Slips due to his health concerns, and is a great value pick for the secondary. Would have went much higher if not for health factors. Competes with AOA or a free agent for the departed Alan Ball
RD 7. #220- Chris Nield DT W. Virginia
Big, mean, and nasty. Solid depth for the defensive line rotation. Can play nose tackle in the 3-4, and takes snaps on goaline and when Ratliff needs a breather.
RD 7. #251- Adrien Moten OLB Marlyand
Outside linebacker for the 3-4. 6'2" 230 lbs. 4.53 forty. One of the last few picks in the draft, gotta take a chance on someone. Could go anywhere with this pick.
Undrafted guys I would rush to sign, if allowed.
RB- they always slide, and some good ones go undrafted each year. Look for guys like John Clay, Allen Bradfore, Noel Nevine, Mario Fannin. They are all an upgrade over Lonya Miller
WR- Bring in competition for the 5/6 WR spot. Jeff Maehl( i wanted to draft him in the 7th)
S- Some good ones may go undrafted. Brian Lainhart, Colin Jones
TE- Shuylar Oordt- Always on the look out for a big bodied blocking tight end
QB- Jerrod Johnson or Tyrod Taylor. Bring in someone to compete with McGee. Could sit on the practice squad and learn.
