Well DeMarcus is gone.....time to try to rebuild the D
With DeMarcus cut we will have roughly $8.5 million to spend in free agency
Major FA Signings
Henry Melton- Just makes too much sense with the Marinelli connection. As long as the knee looks fine medically he's a great fit
Chris Clemons- Still fairly young and should be a pretty reasonable contract. Proven above average starting FS in the NFL that should be a fine "stop gap" type for 2 years.
Draft
Round 1- CJ Mosley LB Bama- CJ has been going pretty underrated around here in my opinion. Capable of playing either the Mike or WIL I believe he instantly make our D better. Mosley has some of the best instincts you're going to find in any college player around the nation to go along with above average athletic ability. He was the leader and play caller for arguably the best defense in the nation 2 straight years.
Round 2- Kareem Martin DE UNC- Martin didn't produce his Jr year or he probably wouldn't be available here. 6'6 274 with crazy long arms and great athletic ability. Really not much to dislike about this kid unless you are looking at his stat sheet from early in his career. He did however turn it on for his Sr year with 11.5 sacks and 21.5 TFL. Unmotivated or did the light that he can be great finally just click on? Up to scouts/coaching staff to determine, but there is no doubt Martin has every tool you could possibly want in a 4-3 DE.
Round 3- Joel Bitonio OG/OT Nevada- Very successful college LT who looks to be an ideal fit at OG in the NFL. Although I wouldn't exactly close the book on him being able to play OT. At 6'4 305 with just about 34" inch arms he was one of the top 5 athletes at the combine as for as OL go. Definitely has a nastiness to him and finishes his blocks. Looks like a really ideal fit for a zone blocking OG in the NFL.
Round 4- Caraun Reid DT Princeton- Big thick frame with a very surprising initial burst. I see him as an ideal 1 tech in Rod's scheme because not only is he able to withstand double teams with his strong frame, but he is more than capable of getting after the QB. Much better prospect than some of the 2nd/3rd round guys in m opinion, just hurt by the fact that he's smart and played in the Ivy league.
Round 5- Cody Latimer WR Indiana- We would be foolish to not grab a WR in this historically deep WR class. Latimer is a 6'2 215 playmaker. Good speed to push the defense and reliable hands. Another case of him being on a bad football school with no QB so his draft stock falls. He's also a more than wiling run blocker. Great value for a kid with his size and skill set in the 5th.
Round 6- **Trade 2 7th's for 6th** Ben Gardner DE Stanford- Big, strong, with a non stop motor. Gardner was well on his way to a great senior year until tearing his peck. The injury drops him and he presents a great value. Should make a very good rotational SDE.
Round 7- Henry Josey RB Mizzu- Josey was well on his way to be a stud before blowing his knee out in 2011. Sat out all of 2012 before retuning in 2013 to rush for 1,100 yards and 16 TD's. Knee looked good at the combine when he ran a 4.48....could be a good change of pace back.
Comp Picks
Jeff Matthews QB Cornell
Pierre Warren FS Jacksonville State
Marques Spruill LB Syracuse
So Rod's new starting defense......
DE- Kareem Martin
1 Tech- Caraun Reid
3 Tech- Henry Melton
DE- George Selvie
SLB- Carter
MLB- Lee
WIL- Mosley
FS- Clemons
SS- Church
