Round 1: #27 Penn State DE Jared Odrick
I know, a DE in the 1st round isn't an ideal choice in your eyes, but Odrick is a beast, big and explosive with something of a nasty temperament. He proved to be virtually unstoppable, getting into the backfield consistently as a Senior, during Senior Bowl week, and in the game. Gets a year to backup Spears and pack a huge punch from the nickel, getting a year of NFL strength work, and gets ready to take over for Spears in 2011. If Spears re-signs reasonably, we are still stacked.
Round 2: #59 trade up with Kansas City, get pick #50, give up pick #123 #50 UMass OT Vladimir Ducasse
My pet cat. Huge, athletic, smart, tough. Any adjective you can use to describe an offensive lineman can be applied to Vlad the Impaler. Has experience at both left and right tackle, and also projects as a guard. Offers the length, long arms and quick feet to play OT which he combines along with impressive strength and initial punch. Has a wide base to succeed at OG.
Round 3: #91 trade down with Detroit, get pick #98, get pick #130 #98 Tulane WR Jeremy Williams
South Carolina OLB Eric Norwood is on the board, and Detroit, in dire need of a pass-rush, dials Jerry. So we oblige and move down to take Jeremy Williams. Jeremy is everything you ask for in a receiver, minus blazing speed. Is probably the best route runner among WRs in this class, and treats any ball thrown in his area like it's his' and no one else's. Can be used in a variety of ways, either as a receiver, on reverses or as a kick returner.
Round 5: #130 (from Detroit) Iowa OT Kyle Calloway
We continue to solidify the Oline by selecting the huge and versatile Kyle Calloway. A bit of a BPA selection.
Round 6: #187 Utah FS Robert Johnson
We don't get Nate Allen or Morgan Burnett because I can't pass up the chance to get Vladimir, so we take the top of the 2nd-tier safeties in Robert Johnson. While he doesn't have the range I would prefer in my free safeties, he does make plays (13 career INTs) which is the bottom-line, biggest need in the defensive backfield.
Round 7: #219 Stillman DE Junior Galette
Typical of the late-round choices. A pick that doesn't make much sense since we seemed to be stacked at OLB, and obscure. This kid collected 44.5 TFL and 26.5 sacks during his career, 27 and 17 respectively at Temple. You can never have enough pass-rushers.
