Mocking the first 8 - you are on the clock

Bowers is not a 3-4 DE.

The Cowboys are not nearly as down on Anthony Spencer as Cowboys fans are. So I think that takes Quinn out of the equation.

Colombo is due a $2.6 million roster bonus as soon as the "league year" starts. I think he is gone and we need a RT and the best is Gabe Carimi, while the one with the highest ceiling is Tyron Smith.

I probably take Smith over Carimi, but I wouldn't flinch at either one.

I'm not really down on Spencer. He's solid, but not $8-10 million a year solid. I think Quinn has strong potential and in the short term can be a little more forgiving to the cap.

After his rookie contract is done? If he's as good as I think he'll cost a boatload. But that'll be a nice problem to have.

I'll tell you all why I think we're targeting Peterson and if we can't get him I promise we don't go OLB.

Terence Newman is on the wrong side of 30 with a $10.1 million cap cost. Couple that with Sensabaugh possibly not coming back and Alan Ball still trying to adjust to a football and it means our Secondary is the thinnest corps on this team.

I believe we can survive another year with the same OL. I may not want to, but it is possible, even plausible. I believe we can survive with Bowen as our starting LDE. I absolutely believe Spencer is not a liability so bad we have to take an OLB, and bypass Brandon Williams and Victor Butler in the process.

I do not believe we can survive without fixing the Defensive Backfield. Peterson is the perfect solution to our biggest problem. IMNSHO.

evansilva: Report: Julio Jones is higher on #Bengals draft board than A.J. Green

Sounds good ....except, like I said what if the Bengals take Julio at 4 and the Browns have AJ Green sitting there for them at 6 and cant risk moving down.

Was last year surviving?

That will not happen. If Peterson is at 6 for Cleveland there is no way Jerry does not make that call. The Browns at that point could easily select AJ Green at 9.

IDK about all that. Whats stopping the Rams or Skins from trading into the 7, or 8 slots

I agree if Peterson is there he's who the Cowboys take and I wouldn't be opposed. In the scenario presented he is not available. And while I have my issues with Prince, if he were there I wouldn't be surprised if the Cowboys took him due to the Newman contract. But again, we're talking this scenario and who I would select, not who we think the Cowboys take. I don't think they're going Quinn no matter what.

in this scenario i take Tyron Smith.

IMO although i'm not a huge fan of PP's i think he'll go #4 to the Bengals. Jonathon Joseph is a FA this year, they have Leon Hall on the other side. Instead of trying to sign Joseph to a big deal i think they'll take PP and have done with Joseph.

As for Smith its a no brainer imo. Open up the running game on the right just like Free did on the left. Make it hard for D's to get mismatches against sloth footed RT's.

Bowers imo is NOT a 3-4 DE nor an OLB. he is a 4-3, and may well be a good one at that. I just dont think he suits our scheme. And although i like Quinn at OLB i dont think they're ready to give up on Spencer.

Smith stinks in run blocking.

Better at least get that out of a top 10 pick. That won't be the case with Smith.

Carimi is a reach though. Why not get a defensive player and try and move that 2nd rounder up to get a tackle?

Or give up our what should be a pick 20-32 1st rounder next and a later round pick from this year for a late first rounder his year? Then we can grab a Carimi or Sherrod.

ok give me a OT that could start year one that you can get in the 2 round

Smiith
Carimi
Sherrod

are all first round picks

these are the only three IMO that could come in and start day one

What's your opinion on M Cannon at RT? or O Franklin and J Brewer? Do you think any of those could start Day 1 or by mid-season?

Will last year be repeated?

Why do you even ask me this crap?

Because you said you believe we can survive another year and I don't think we survived last year. Our Oline handicapped our offense.

I know it will be more of the same if Colombo is out there and Davis is just awful in any kind of space.

It would not be wise to go into this next season with the same oline as last year. You gotta make a move if you're serious about winning.

This team scored 394 points with those two handicaps on the OL.

That is surviving. Treading water. Getting by. Whatever terms you needs to soothe your palate.

This team allowed 436 points because of the huge gaps in the D-backfield.

That is dying. Or whatever terms you need there.

I just think it was a losing effort on both sides of the ball. I've never seen a season where so many little things went wrong. The bottom line is, you win in the trenches, and the Cowboys are not strong at all in the trenches.

A better DL and productive Spencer = better secondary

A better OL = better Romo, Dez, Miles, Roy, Austin, etc.

You win in the trenches, and we're old and unproductive at most of those positions (excluding Free, Ware, Gurode and Ratliff).

and you determined this from the extensive game film you have access to i guess? Funny, because none of the write ups or "experts" have said any such thing, just that he gets to the second level quickly, oh and that he handled another top 15 pick in Jordan quite comfortably in the run game.

One of the two - Carimi or Sherrod, will slide on draft day due to teams having other needs. Remains to be seen who...I'm not sure either guy has had his Pro Day.

It's really that simple. I think this line has one more good run left in it. But I think we still need to be drafting replacements or finding them in FA if possible.

Tyson Clabo would go a long way toward providing a veteran stopgap for us at RT. I still think Holland should start at RG.

I agree we need to find replacements if possible. I just don't think it will be in round 1 unless we trade down.

I can however, see us trading up for Peterson. In fact, I believe that will happen.

I think Cannon is a G in NFL
Franklin a G also
Brewer just seems soft

After redshirting in 2006, Brewer missed the entire season with a foot injury. In 2008, he was a reserve in the first eight games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. After a strong showing in spring practice as a junior, Brewer realized his potential as the anchor on the right side of an offensive line that gave up just 16 sacks - the second-lowest total among Big 10 teams that season. The 2010 honorable-mention All-Big Ten pick started his senior year playing very well against non-conference opponents but again missed three games -- this time with an ankle injury -- before returning at less than full strength for Indiana's final four games.
Despite Brewer's large frame, he is more of a finesse blocker than a mauler and never really took the leadership reins in 2010 from Rodger Saffold, whom the St. Louis Rams selected with the first pick of the second round of the '10 draft.. Brewer may be a relatively high draft pick because of his vast potential but he's not without question marks.

I rather go with the guy from UCF Jah Reid if you looking for RT only

6-8 / 325

Has a long frame with above-average athleticism. Has no injury concerns and has strong experience as a three-year starter. Shows ability to ride rushers past the pocket with long arms. Possesses adequate quickness and gets into position on time. Controls college defensive linemen when he locks on due to decent upper-body strength. Flashes the awareness to help out inside when necessary and is a tough player who worked hard to lose weight after enrolling. Is athletic enough to find linebackers and engage targets at the second level.

In this scenario, Smith would be my choice. Bowers is great value-wise, but he's not a five tech.

I'll defer to Hos on this one due to locality, but a few of my sportswriting peeps have stated that Buffalo has essentially 'promised' Miller at #3. In that scenario, the Cards would go Peterson at #5. I could see it happening myself.
