As I sit here and think about this year's free agency, it just makes me appreciate the era that I grew up watching. Back then, there was no concern about Too Tall Jones sporting a 49ers jersey the following year. Players stayed with the teams that drafted them. And, as a fan, I really wish it was the same. At the same time though, I understand the need to impose a salary cap, and I agree with the spirit of one. But are there ways that we could have a salary cap as well as team loyalty without players giving up millions of dollars to stay with their teams?
I just wish that drafted players got some discount off of the cap hit, and it was enough of a discount to make an impact. So, it's time to re-sign Dez. What if the Cowboys only had to count 80% of the salary toward the cap? You keep your players, you maintain an even advantage throughout the league, and are definitely inspired to build your football team through the draft. Draft picks become even more important. As a fan, it just seems like something like this needs to happen. Seeing Murray wearing green next year will just disgust me. Imagine Randy White with a Commander jersey.....My how the times have changed.

I'd really like to see an incentive put in place for teams to be able to keep their drafted talent.

there should be some type of benefit for having drafted the player or the player has been with the club a mininum of so many years.

This was a big issue when Emmitt and Rice changed teams.

I agree with you 100%. I also feel the QB should not be a part of the salery cap at all. They gobble up to much of the cap. I feel if you draft a player you should be able to pay that player.

That's why I think Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of the NFL. They haven't had a losing season since the year 2000.

Players after 5 years with one team should be allowed to stay with that team and not count 100 percent against the cap.

NFL's salary cap is a broken system. Almost impossible to keep your best player through the majority of their careers unless you're a QB.

Clear generational gap on this subject apparently....I'm 25 and love the off season of the nfl. I would probably be less interested if players stayed on the same teams their entire careers. The GM aspect of the sport is incredibly interesting to me

The problem you overlook is that the purpose of the salary cap is not to ensure competitive balance, it's to increase the owner profits and team values. Oh they certainly tell the fans that it's all about competitive balance not about the money. That doesn't make it true. If they kept the cap based on the same % of total revenue and counted their own drafted players at 80% of true cost against the cap that would mean they would pay out a higher% of the revenue to the players and have lower profits and team values.

The truth about this issue for Dallas, which makes us all sick over the past few days and how they have played out, is that the Jones' have muddled up this team during a period between 2007 and 2012, and the team is eating dead money like crazy, along with growing a mangina and not challenging the NFL for their taking money for the Austin contract.

So this sudden conservative posture they have assumed ignores some factors which negates winning now and not down the road since Romo is 35 years old, because they have allowed a central piece go to a competitor, and have no plans to replace points and time of possession.

Approximately 48% of the offensive touches just signed with Philly, and gave them a rushing attack which will milk the clock late in games, while Dallas is hiring a wastrel named McFadden and using a first for a RB instead of defense to shore up a 29PPG offense that now has a huge question mark.

This is mismanagement, a situation I have been *****ing about for six or seven years now.

It has all come home to roost.

I like the NBA rule, a team can pay their own free agents 10% more than any other team!

I think this is the way to go and it seems like such an obvious adjustment. I'm sure they would have to tweak the cap amount with the players to keep the overall balance between the owners and players close to the same level. That way you have a better chance of fans getting to see a team's core stay together.

Salary cap plus paying qb's excess of $20 mil a year leaves little else for teams. Sad.

Dez $12,823,000
BCarr $12,717,000
JWitten $8,512,000

Unless it gives a cap discount, it won't matter

Plus, the NBA had max contracts, while the NFL does not
