Anybody still think Swaim is getting cut?

Nope. And what we do at TE at cut downs is one of the most interesting, least talked about story lines from camp here on the board.

Swaim showed enough in the SD preseason game to make the 53 roster. Since then, he has done nothing but further solidify his spot on the roster. Only injury could derail him a roster spot right now. I hope he stays healthy. We found another hidden late-round, unpolished gem.

I have no idea why anyone would think Swaim gets cut. Not a clue. I could see 31 teams putting a claim in for him if he were cut.

So you are saying, that if Mo has an outstanding year this year, the FO will not entertain offering a new contract? Exactly how do you know that's reality? This team has shown a propensity to sign their own players if they feel the upside exceeds the risk...even with injury concerns (i.e. Spencer).

If he has an outstanding year the price tag is going to be mighty high
And I always fear a guy who had an outstanding year only in a contract year

I think it is very disrespectful to Dorsett, Duane Thomas, Emmit Smith and what DeMarco Murray did last year...for people (don't care if they are HOFers or not)...to suggest "anybody" can run behind a top notch OL. Of course it makes it a lot EASIER. But being a RB in the NFL is so much more than having a 100 yard game on any given week of the season. I hope the REAL football people in the organization were ignoring Jerry when he insinuated this every time Randle had a good game last season.

Being a successful professional RB starts with being available every week...or at least 12 games. Which means, taking care of your body, nutrition, rest, stretching, lifting, massages, etc. It also requires a lot of film study. It also requires instincts, football IQ, understanding down and distance, knowing when to go for a big run, or just taking the 3 yards in front of you....and knowing how to "absorb" hits. All of these things and then some have a direct impact on a RB being available.

Of course "any" RB can run through a big hole....but can you see the hole while it is still developing...can you be patient and set up your blocks?

People really underestimate how great of a RB Emmit Smith was...because he was not a 4.2 guy...or did not have the "wiggle" Barry Sanders had. For sure a solid offensive line goes a long way to piling up the numbers he put up....but you have to be a GREAT football player to do what Emmit did. And Emmit did all of those aforementioned things....PLUS...PLUS...he caught the ball out the backfield and he picked up the blitz.

So I hope I am wrong...but I still don't think ANY of the guys we got are lead RBs. I still think they are all the same player....change of pace backs. Who are better suited to compliment someone who handles 1st down, 2nd down, short yardage, goal iine etc.... I still think we need someone who can carry the ball 17 times a game on 1st and 2nd down, someone who can be called on 5 straight times when you are trying to "ice" a game....someone who will be available for 16 weeks plus playoffs. Again, because I am a Cowboy fan....I am pulling for whomever we decide to go with, so I hope I am wrong about these guys.

The problem is that we've got 4 TEs who'd get snapped up in a heart beat if they were cut. Trading Hanna makes the most sense, since he's an impending FA, but that's hardly a gimme and you don't get real value for him that way, especially if hobbled.

The other option is carrying 4 TEs and going short at either WR or HB. I think that makes the most sense, especially early. They're going to spread Escobar out this year and make teams decide whether to defend the two TE sets with an extra CB (to cover Escobar and Beasley in the slot) or to play the run agains the two TE sets if we keep the ends in to block. Dunbar, too, can play WR. I think that's the route they probably go, at least until Hanna comes back in, but that means cutting Lucky Whitehead and putting him on the PS.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see what they do. It's a good problem to have, and it makes for some interesting roster discussions.

One my my early calls from camp was Hanna trade.

Felt they wouldn't have traded that pick for swaim if they didn't see something. Especially with Hanna on the last year on his deal.

It's the thing that makes the most sense, right? Though with him hobbled, maybe it's tougher to make happen. Gonna be interesting to see what they do with that TE position, though.

Swaim and Lucky Whitehead are this year's camp darlings and that's quite OK as someone has to fill those roles... but just be very aware those dudes are probably not mentioned much at all come week 1.

Ironically they may be competing for the same spot.

Escobar looks to be getting more outside WR reps.

As I said above, there are going to be a lot of interesting things we can do with that combination of Dunbar, Escobar, Beasley, and the running game. Should be able to setup some favorable situations just from the versatility those middle-roster players give us as change ups to our usual looks. Can't wait to see how we use it.
