Moore: Six 'next men up' who need to do more to rescue injury-plagued Cowboys

Defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford -- The Cowboys went into the Falcons game without three of their top pass rushers in Greg Hardy, Jeremy Mincey and rookie Randy Gregory. Defensive tackle Terrell McClain went on the injured list several days before the game with a toe injury. The defensive line needed a big game from its most accomplished player.

Crawford responded by assisting on one tackle. He had one quarterback pressure, pushing a lineman back into Matt Ryan, forcing the quarterback to throw early and incomplete.

That's not much production for a player who was on the field for 49 snaps.

Crawford plays the three technique in Rod Marinelli's scheme, a position designed to put pressure on the quarterback. It's a position that created a career-high spike of 11 sacks by former Cowboys tackle Jason Hatcher, twice as many as he's had in any season before or since.

The Cowboys didn't make Crawford one of the highest paid defensive tackles in the league -- $25.7 million guaranteed -- for his accomplishments to this point. They are betting on the impact he will have going forward.

Now is a good time to start.

Receiver Terrance Williams -- The most dangerous threat at outside receiver during Dez Bryant's absence failed to catch a pass in Sunday's loss to Atlanta.

Williams caught two or fewer passes in 12 games last season, failing to catch a pass in two of those games. The Cowboys could live with that lack of production when Bryant was on the field.

Not now. Production is a necessity, not a luxury, as Williams assumes the lead receiver role. He can't be shut out for a game, and he can't have only three passes thrown in his direction, which was the case in the loss to Atlanta.

Tight end Gavin Escobar -- He didn't have a catch Sunday and was on the field for only eight snaps.

Another casual fan/reporter who just looks at sacks. How is Crawford gonna get sacks when there is only pressure coming from one side which is Lawrence's side? We know Hayden isn't much of a pass rushing threat. Teams right now can just double TC and live with one on one match ups with the likes of Hayden, Coleman before he was cut, Bishop, and Jack Crawford. Crawford and Lawrence are right now the only real pass rushing threats. Double one and make the other try to win when there's zero help.

I agree with everything in this article, but it's hard for Escobar to step up when the coaching staff doesn't have him on the field and ignores him the few times he is.

Wow, just 8 snaps? This guy has produced 1000 times more than Street during the last 3 years and only gets 8 snaps?

Tight end Gavin Escobar -- He didn't have a catch Sunday and was on the field for only eight snaps.

If the Cowboys have trouble throwing the ball down the field or getting it to the outside receivers, Escobar is a viable option. That could really be the case this Sunday against a New Orleans defense that has been victimized by tight ends.

That was a whole not of nothing. Had he just left the article blank would have been more helpful.

Right now everyone needs to step up and carry out their assignments. No freelancing just execute your responsibility.

I think Escobar's lack of snaps indicates how comfortable they are with him in their subpackages. Keep hearing what a mismatch he is supposed to be, so why is it they plan so few snaps?

Lawrence is consistently seeing a OL and TE so teams are are going to block with 5-6 and have 4-5 out in patterns. And plan on having at least 3 seconds to get pass off.

Next man up is great coach speak and being a former college basketball coach I get it.

But as Sturm said this week - sometimes all you need to do is take attendance to see who's going to win.
