Great article.

I've come to respect Stephen. I can tell he knows more about what makes this team tick as much as Jerry and doesn't shot from the hip - unlike Jerry.

Some folks mentioned that the drafting of Manziel was nothing more than a smoke screen. But reading this article Jerry would have taken Manziel. Luckily, Stephen was around to make sure that didn't happen. If we've taken Manziel I don't think we would have had such as successful season last year and this place would have been a circus.

Yeah, that's what really stood out to me. I can't believe the discussion on whether or not to take Manziel if he fell was left for draft day morning.

It also doesn't jive with what Tony's said previously on the topic. Not sure what to believe there, honestly.

It does seem that the effort to portray Stephen as just as bad as Jerry is probably completely misguided, too.

One of the take-aways from this article, which was not on the page, is this.

Think on the father/son relationship between Jerry and Stephen. Past the business dealings, but the patriarch and his child.

As tough as Jerry is as a business leader. And as tough as Stephen is, growing in his father's footsteps, there is a great love and respect between those two.

It's almost an enviable relationship of two men running a business they love without question, and enjoying each other throughout a lifetime.

Most of us leave the nest and live our own lives. These guys have something worth more than the gold they both possess.

As a sappy ending to this post - call your dad today if you can. There will come a day you no longer can.

Both guys need to give credit. Jerry was instrumental in getting a guy like La'el here. I don't really care for Jerry as a football GM, but he knows how to run an organization that players actually want to come to. Excellent marketer.

Thanks for sharing that was a really good read. The more I learn about Stephen the more I like him, the franchise will be in good hands after Jerry is gone.

Certainly there have been some that have "warned" us... "Oh Stephen is going to run the Cowboys just like the old man."

Nonsense.

An article on Stephen Jones' influence within the Dallas Cowboys football team and it makes no mention of his role in convincing Jerry Jones that Terrell Owens needed to be released in 2009?

In title only.

Well I thought I posted this quote earlier but for some reason it's not there. Odd.

“I know a lot of people want to say that Jerry is stepping back. To the contrary, I don’t think anything has really changed at all.’’ - Stephen Jones

I don't live in that fan contrived fantasy land where the ego maniac who so covets power never actually uses it.

“Son, if you want to do special things in life, you can’t keep picking and doing things down the middle,” he said. “What we just did was down the middle.”

that statement is all you need to know why this organization has struggled over the previous 18 years when Jerry was running the show....he's a snake oil salesman, you can't be a snake oil salesman and risk taker running a football team

If Jerry was in charge, he would have signed Hardy to a long term deal, Steven would sign him to a one year deal. Jerry would have taken Gregory in the first round and probably moved up to take him, Steven would have taken him in the second...Jerry would have taken Manziel, Steven would take Martin, those are the differences in a solid football man and a blind man throwing darts at a draft board as Jerry has done for years

Thank the football Gods that we did not take Manziel. It seems that Jerry was upset that he was outvoted during the draft - which is a good thing.

From reading that article Stephen seems more attuned to being a GM than Jerry. He doesn't make decision himself and takes the opinions of everyone around him - players and coaches alike.

Now if they can get rid of Lacewell, Jerry's yesman, everything will be fine and dandy.

I don't even think it is Stephen Jones so much as it is Stephen Jones' right hand man, Will McClay. Stephen is smart enough to continue paying Will whatever it takes to keep him by his side.

Totally agree. Beat writers (and the subjects of the article) love these kind of puff pieces but at the end of day it comes down to how the decision works out. Martin (the safe pick) was clearly the right choice and that vindicates Stephen. But Dez was the risky pick and that worked out spectacularly well, so do we give credit to Jerry, the idiot buffoon gambler owner who made the move?

We should, but at the end of the day the data is coming from Will McClay and IMO he deserves most of the credit.

Larry Lacewell was put to pasture a long time ago.

Bill Parcells overhauled the entire scouting department during his tenure as head coach, that included Lacewell's retirement.
