More Details on Why Pickens Wore Out His Welcome with Steelers?

This quote courtesy of former NFL receiver TJ Houshmandzedah but there are other interesting ones in the article from Tom Pelissero and Jeff Howe of the Athletic.

“George Pickens had stepped over and crossed the line a bit too many times and I know people that play with the Steelers. He’d be late for the team plane that would be flying out to away games multiple times. He’d be late to get on the team bus and they had enough of it,”

Great character

If Pickens eventually wants a rewarding contract, what he does in Dallas will be watched closely to see exactly how he conducts himself. I'm reasonably sure he realizes that and might become someone who deserves what he's likely to be offered in the future.

It remains to be seen if he'll do all that's expected of him, whether he's destined to remain with the Cowboys or not. It only serves his cause to put his best foot forward during his stay with Dallas.

He'll surely be watched closely in the year that's about to be fully exposed. If he falters, it certainly won't go unnoticed. If he has a brain in his head, he'll make sure to act accordingly. If not, it will be that much easier to allow him to depart. His conduct will affect his future contracts. I suspect he knows it.

Chronic lateness is something people have to reprogram themselves out of. We've probably all known people who are always late everywhere they go. Some of them just seem to accept that that is just the way it is, that they can't help it.
That's me, it is part of my M.O.

If George is late, leave him, and make him take an Uber or book his own flight. Bro, has to be professional, this ain't high school.

Got to have a few thugs to win.

I'm not sure 1 year will be enough..........in other words, I'm wanna see his best behavior for 2 straight years before offering him a long-term deal.
The only way to do that is with a franchise tag. Plus there is no such thing as a long term deal. I'd rather them sign him now, and be able to bail early if things go south. With minimal cap hit damage. If you wait until next year, and he plays really well, the average cap hit will be Lamb likem or worse. Franchise tag him, still stupid high cap hit. These 4 year deals are usually structured to get out after 2-3 years.

Milton was a bad guy because he wanted a chance to play. Ok
I need some clarification on this. Is this approval or disapproval?
Wanting to play does not make someone a bad guy in my opinion. I wouldn’t want to sit behind mayy for five years and never get a chance.

We are not signing him with any significant money without proof that he can improve his negative behavior issues. Both parties have stated they have no interest in talking about a contract until after the season.

Honestly, I'm sure we didn't trade for him to come here and play poorly to avoid a large cap hit. They would love nothing more than for him to play at an elite level ( ALL-PRO if possible ) and worry about the contract/cap issues after the season. Still will have pretty much 3 options
Offer him a long-term deal ( yes...4-3 years )
Franchise tag ...................$22M range
Let him walk, comp pick.....3rd or 4th round

Would be hard to trust this guy with an extension.

The Cowboys gambled in a way.

This is most likely a short-term play to see if Pickens can help the team make a playoff run this season.

They most likely will not extend him and hope there’s a bit of a honeymoon period with Pickens that will have him on his best behavior. Besides, he is on a contract year so he’ll want to show not only the Cowboys, but the rest of the league that he’s worth investing a lucrative multi-year contract in.

If he fails or disappoints, the Cowboys will recoup at least a little draft capital back.

This move is all about this season.

You simply don't put up with it. You close the doors & drive or fly away.

You then suspend him.

After suspension, if it happens again, you cut him & move on.

People only become this way because they were allowed to get away with it.

Michael Irvin will have a good talk with him if George Pickens starts acting up. If he doesn't stop misbehaving, Irvin will call Jerry and convince him to cut him from the team.

It's hilarious how people think the Steelers just gave the guy away so cheaply for no reason.

We'll be lucky if he only self-destructs and doesn't take Dak and CeeDee down with him.
