More Effective - Longer Duration or High Intensity Cardio

Hey guys,

I've heard and read conflicting reports with regard to fat burning in cardio. Which have you found more effective personally - longer distance cardio or cardio that is much shorter but has intervals of extreme intensity in terms of burning fat and dropping those stubborn last pounds you want to eliminate?

You're talking about LISS vs HIIT. They both have advantages and disadvantages.

Whatever works for you is best, but I wouldn't do a straight up jog (neither LISS or HIIT) for 30+ minutes if you are only trying to burn fat.

Usually high intense training burns calories more and keeps on burning more once when you are at rest from what I have read and experienced.

HIIT is more effective at burning fat, if that's all your interested in.

My answer for these questions is always the same though. Do both. HIIT on days when you don't lift weights. Do LISS on days when you do (Post workout). If you don't lift weights at all (and if your goal is weight loss, weightlifting should be priority over either), then split your week into HIIT days and LISS days.

There is really on reason not to do both, unless you have health concerns.
