Roy Williams is the only defensive back in the NFL with at least two sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles this season.

He's also the first defensive back in the past five years with at least 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles for turnovers in the first nine games of a season. Only one defensive back did it in each full season of 2001 (Mike Brown), 2002 (Brian Dawkins), 2003 (Brian Williams) and 2004 (Rodney Harrison), but none of them accomplished it before Game 11. And only Brown and Williams also scored a touchdown that season, as Williams has.

Strong Safeties are not supposed to All-Pro caliber players in coverage

They are supposed to make plays and knock the shiate out of people

Oh, and not shooting at people is always a bonus

Roy is a good SS cover guy.

The problem comes when he is not used that way. He is ineffective playing deep. When we have a true FS ball-hawk we will see how much better he is. But he is bad in coverage...i.e. washington

Adam, I know Shawn Springs had a ridiculous season statistically last year. How come he's not on the list? I'm guessing not enough forced fumbles.

No matter how many times this little rumor gets shot down (Parcells has stated it was Glenn's mistakes against the 'Skins that allowed the TDs) people will just keep saying it like it's true. If you want to blame Roy for something, blame him for the Shockey TD. Course, we won that game, so it didn't really matter.

Ah nevermind the facts, Roy sucks in coverage. Can't believe he let the Commanders beat us like that.

You guessed right. Shawn Springs has never in his entire career had 2 forced fumbles in a season, much less the first 9 games. Not to mention, he doesn't have a single sack or interception this year.

I wouldn't say hes bad but he is no ed reed when it comes to coverage, but then again Ed and Roy are day and Night...and the Washington game can't fully be put on Roy's sholders Glenn also got behind on moss

Williams is as good as any safety in the league. I don't think Ed Reed could be as effective doing Williams job. Williams gives you another LB out tehre almost against the run. I think most any safety is going to have trouble covering a teams speed WR.

No one ever proclaimed Roy as a great cover safety, but he's alot better than people gave him credit for. Look at Baltimore, they are horrendous this year, Reed, granted only playing in 5 games and all, has 0 int's.

Polamalu has to be one of the more complete safeties now days. He can cover and make big plays in the run game as well as intimidate recievers across the middle.

he rarely has to cover anywhere downfield and if you watch the Steelers when he DOES have to cover deeper parts of the field, he is exposed

the Steelers coaching staff does a great job of using Polamalu the right way

that's true, the guy reminds me a lot of Roy in Roy's rookie season. Half the time he was blitzing, the other half he was blowing RBs up. He was ALWAYS around the ball and had plenty of passes he picked that year, 5.
Polamalu is the same way and yes he's not a great cover guy either but if you let him be him and play close to the LoS, he's a phenomenal player for you.
I'd say he's playing the best of any S in the NFL right now, part of that is that he's being used correctly. I'm not knocking Roy, but the Steelers games I've watched, seemed like he made nearly every play on defense. Roy has been very very good also but I think we have more good players on D than Pitt to spread the wealth....i.e. Henry, Ware, Ellis, ect.
