DALLAS — More than 30 people who attended an event with motivational speaker Tony Robbins have been treated for burns after Robbins encouraged them to walk on hot coals as a way of conquering their fears, Dallas fire officials said.

Five people were taken to a hospital Thursday night, while the rest were treated at the scene for burns to their feet and lower extremities, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

The hot coals were spread outside the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center as part of a four-day Robbins seminar called "Unleash the Power Within."

Representatives for Robbins didn't immediately return messages Friday, but in a statement provided to KTVT-TV organizers said about 7,000 people walked across the coals and only five "requested any examination beyond what was readily available on site."

LOL!

"Con" may be a bit harsh, but I understand the point...

Personally I think there's a wee-bit of "con" in just about every showman no matter what their niche. To a certain extend people are attracted to it.

He gives people what they want– a clear direction in life... Even if it lasts no more than 30 seconds after they've left the venue.

The hot-coals thing is pure hollow-spectacle but is it any more over the top than a Penn & Tell magic trick or a singer lip-syncing at a concert? Probably not.

And if you listen to Tony Robbin's message... There's a lot of good there, or a lot of what many people need to hear.

Robbin's ain't original. But who is? He borrowed from Jim Rohm, Brian Tracey, Zip Ziegler and Earl Nightingale, with a healthy bit of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) thrown in.

Tony was a "Holiday Inn" performer who "discovered" the hot-coals thing. He then got on the first big infomercial success Guthy Renker had, "Think & Grown Rich" with Fran Tarkenton.

The rest is history.

Obviously something went wrong because this isn't a difficult feet. :D

Agreed. I was given the opportunity to walk on red hot coal during a visit to Hawaii. Quick steady steps all the way across and no burns to my bare feet. These people did something wrong.

anyone over the age of 4 who believes that walking on 500 degree plus anything and not get burned deserves what they got.
you would think after 3 or 4 got dangerously burned they would stop.

I would have loved to have been off to the side watching them with a few beers, some friends, just laughing our a**** off as each one tried

He did help Jack Black see inner beauty in Shallow Hal :D

His fire walking seminars have worked before with no one getting hurt, but it's not mind over matter. It's science. If the coals have burned down enough, they're coated with ash, which is a poor conductor of heat. Therefore, as long as the people walk fast enough, the heat doesn't conduct through quickly enough to burn them. What went wrong? Maybe their wasn't enough ash or maybe the people didn't work fast enough.

I've never been to a Robbins seminar, but I have listened to some of his recordings and have read some of his books. I wouldn't call him a con man. I think some of his material has value. IMO, his NLP stuff is bunk, but other things can help people. His re-framing technique can help you to see a painful situation from a more positive angle and hence get over something that's been bothering you. His "power of why" technique is great for getting yourself motivated and overcoming procrastination. When I say "his" technique, btw, I don't mean he invented it, only that he espouses it. You don't have to pay a bunch of money for one of his programs to learn how to use these. You could just Google them. The main thing, as with any technique, is it can only help you if you consistently use it. IMO Brian Tracey's books are a lot better. They're less hyped and more practical, and he's straightforward in his honesty that success has to accumulate over a long period of time; there are no quick fixes. And he doesn't use any gimmicks like fire walks.

Great explanation. I never bothered to look it up. Thanks :)

As far as motivational types.... The main problem... People don't apply or even think about it AFTER a seminar... After listening to an audio.

If you go for it, which is what he preaches, then it works... You work... He's your rah-rah-rah cheerleader.

Funny story... He's released many audios over the years... One was about marriage... How you should do this and that like he did... Then he got divorced and he was trying to spend money all over buying girlfriends and friends "gifts" so his wife wouldn't get it.

His next seminar... He basically said.... We grew apart... Things change etc... A tad bit hypocritical...

I like the dude though... He was funny as heck with his banana hands in Shallow Hal... Lol

The funniest part of this story is that "witnesses" were saying people were stopping and trying to take selfies and videos while walking over the coals.

Outside of the coals being potentially too hot, if you stopping for a selfie, you deserve all the burnt crispy feet you get.

That explains why they got burned. It would have helped if they understood the mechanics of what makes fire walking work. Of course, actually understanding it would take away from the mystery of this "miracle."
