Funny how last year was a contract year too.Funny how it all came together for Mo in his contract year...
Some players take time for things to click. We always talk about QBs but it took several years for Dez to become Dez. Doug Free didn't start for his first two and a half years in the NFL. Terrell McClain is in his sixth NFL season and didn't start a game in the last four seasons - but he was probably our best DL for the first four games.
If Claiborne had the light go on in his fifth NFL season, he wouldn't be the first to follow that path.
I'm happy for him. He came in with hype and had to live up to it. Got healthier and got bigger but I wonder how much credit goes to the new secondary coach....this whole secondary is playing better. Some will say its the competition but I don' think anyone even last year expected our secondary to look good against ANYONE.
Mo's played well this season and was very good today. Good on him for playing that ball in the air well and making a play because he was clearly beaten on that play. Any decent QB would have led his receiver with that throw.
Great point, I think there are several reasons the secondary is a lot better -
1 - Claiborne has made a big jump in performance, obviously.
2 - Claiborne being able to play against #1 WRs has let Carr play against lesser WRs, which is exactly where he should be. Carr is a pretty good 2/3 CB but a very poor #1 CB.
3 - Byron Jones hasn't made a lot of flashy plays but he is doing a lot of things well. He is doing all the little things right that Wilcox was doing wrong.
4 - They should limit the time Church spends in coverage as much as possible and Jones playing deep lets Church play in the box, which is better for both of them. That positioning is way, way better than Church and Wilcox playing deep.
5 - The coaching is probably a big part of it like you say.
Mo, and late bloomers like him, are the reason teams like to pick up former first rounders who have disappointed their original teams. There's an underlying talent waiting to be realized. He may never reach the level he was projected to reach but I admire him for battling to get to this point,,, and who knows, health willing, he may just become the badass we hoped for!
He had a contract year last year, as well. He's completely healthy and focused. I hope it lasts.Funny how it all came together for Mo in his contract year...
